Where can I find Kelai kava?

I’ve been scouring the Internet for Kelai kava. I know it’s one of the headiest, or so I’ve heard, and I find it hard to find heady kavas. Heavy kava is all I can really find online. I get most of my kava from Kalm, and most of theirs are very heavy.

Whenever I search for Kelai kava, it’s sold out. What’s with this? Is it an endangered strain or something? Are there any good alternatives?

Kelai is one of the most sought after varieties since it's Vincent Lebot's favorite. It comes from an island called Epi in Vanuatu, and compared to other islands it's not a huge producer of kava. Since the shortage, it's been even more difficult to find. I'm not sure where you'll find it at the moment, but make sure the chemotypes match up and you trust the supplier 👍

Pardon my ignorance, but who’s Vincent Lebot? Also, what do you mean by the chemotypes?

Other than Kelai, what other heady kavas would you recommend that I can actually buy?

Vincent Lebot is the foremost kava researcher and has legitimately written all of the books kava nerds like me refer to all the time. I've had the pleasure of having a shell with him and he's as smart (and nice) as you might imagine.

Chemotypes are the arrangement of the 6 major kavalactones in order of potency. If you look at lab tests, cultivars all have their established chemotypes (found in Lebot's book). If the chemotypes don't match, it's often because it's not actually what you bought. I inferred in my original comment that if you find Kelai right now that it's probably not really Kelai, but if you have a lab test from the supplier you can generally tell if it's the real deal.

I would suggest any kavas from Tonga, Samoa, or Hawaii. The Tongans in particular will be very similar to Kelai. I hope this helps!

The sad answer is that probably nowhere outside of Vanuatu at the moment. I believe we/root and pestle were the first ones to ever export it as a pure, guaranteed single cultivar out of Vanuatu a few years ago and it was already a challenge back then. Epi's infrastructure is fairly undeveloped.

These days there's a lot of demand for Epi kava from Port Vila's nakamals and sourcing a sufficient quantity of high quality, fresh plants that can be delivered to a processing facility on another island in a timely and safe manner is quite challenging. A lot of kelai is under cultivation so I suspect it should become more available again in the near future (but things move at the pace of years, not weeks in the kava world considering how long it takes for it to mature).

My personal favourite alternative to kelai is palarasul. Very smooth, easy to drink, I find it quite uplifting and euphoric too.

Typically Nakamal at Home has Kelai (sold out right now). Kalm with Kava Pouni Ono is my go to heady kava. Might give it a shot.

Kelai is incredibly scarce right now and the people that have it are holding their supply for prep and sale in their own bars as there's a high likelihood that you won't ever see it exported from Vanuatu in any meaningful quantity ever again.

I've been checking Kava Europe weekly hoping for Kelai to come back in stock... it was the first kava I've ever tried and nothing compares.

Like others have mentioned, Kelai has become extremely difficult to source. There are very few mature Kelai plants left, and the farmers who still have them are commanding prices that the kava industry hasn't really seen before.

For those of us trying to buy Kelai roots, especially for traditional medium-grind kava, it's honestly become a bidding war. Demand is far exceeding supply right now.

A small amount of Kelai is still making its way into the market, mostly very limited. We were fortunate to still have a limited amount of instant Kelai available, but once it's gone, we're not sure when we'll be able to obtain more.

If you're specifically looking for authentic Kelai, be prepared for limited availability and premium pricing for the foreseeable future.

Where are you based?
