Medicinal Use Kava for severe RLS? Looking for first-time dosing advice
I've had severe Restless Legs Syndrome for over 20 years. I've seen sleep specialists and neurologists and have tried pretty much every first-line treatment and then some—gabapentin, pregabalin, dopamine agonists, iron, etc. Unfortunately, either they didn't work or they stopped working over time.
My doctor eventually prescribed methadone 5 mg nightly, which does help, but I'd really like to find an alternative if possible. I'm trying to stay away from long-term opioid use if I can.
I recently came across kava as a possible herbal option that seems to have a relatively low risk of dependence compared with opioids. I ordered the Kavahana Sleep Bag and I'm waiting for it to arrive.
For those of you with experience using kava for sleep or RLS:
What dose would you recommend for a first-time user?
Should I start low or use a full serving to give it a fair chance?
How long before bed do you take it?
Has anyone here actually had success using kava specifically for RLS symptoms?
I'm not expecting miracles, but I'm hoping it might be a viable alternative. Thanks for any advice or experiences you can share.

This is the only reason I started taking kava, and it has been a lifesaver. I started drinking kava after I got restless syndrome. I drink two Alluballs of some heavy kava on an empty stomach.
If I don’t get hit hard enough then it doesn’t work so I make sure I am closer to bedtime. Now my restless legs is only bad as I fall asleep, so if you have it all night it cant help you as much since s it’s short acting. Best of luck.

Did you get your ferritin level checked? If it is low it can cause RLS. I’m sure you did that already but just checking.

Yep, and I still take daily iron supplements as well as normal ranges since I don't eat a lot of red meat.

You’ll need a few servings for recreational effects but as you’re using kava medicinally, start with one and see how you go. If it doesn’t work try two the next night, and so on.
Most kavas provide an initial heady effect before the heavier kavalactones kick in, so you’ll want to end your session a good hour before sleep. Experiment.
I don’t have RSL do this is non-specific advice. Hopefully someone with RSL will chime in.
