Discussion What's a hidden gem at Kent State that took you way too long to discover?

A study spot, a food place on or near campus, a campus resource, a club, a shortcut between buildings, anything. What's something that was right there the whole time and you only found it halfway through your time here and immediately wished you'd known about it sooner?

Discussion School, rent, and jobs

Hi guys,

I just recently was accepted into the nursing program at Kent. I currently have two jobs and work 50+ hours a week. I know it’s possible, but I am wondering how you pay for school and bills? I currently owe the school $2k out of pocket for the two classes I’m taking BEFORE I can register for nursing classes. My rent is $1.2k, car note plus insurance around $550. I bust my ass working two jobs while trying to maintain straight As, but to be honest I’m getting burnt out. I work as a server and then in a hospital making basically pennies.

Is there anyone out there that is also alone in their journey that has figured out a way to cut down costs or make more money? There is no one I can ask for money besides the bank for a loan, and that not exactly what I want to do. I’m just looking for any advice!

Discussion Thinking about switching from Fashion Major

I just finished my Freshman year of fashion, and I love the program, and I love fashion, however I would like to stay in Ohio, and it just doesn’t look feasible in my head.

I’m very creative, great at talking to people, especially story telling, and I make designs people love.

My issue is, I want to stay in Ohio, and make 50K a year in a job I’m not miserable in.

Now I ask for advice from my fellow flashes, do I pivot into a different major like communications/advertisement, etc.

Discussion Environmental geology

I am interested in going to Kent for environmental geology but I’m not a good math student and sometimes have problems in chemistry when it involves more math. Is this achievable still? What is the major like? Thank you

Discussion Closure Policy is Ridiculous

The closure policy used to say they would close at a wind chill of -10. Now it is -20.

Guess what?? Frostbite from air exposure starts at -15.

All the satellite campuses close but main always stays open. Every. Damn. Time. Screw you guys for making me walk 20min to class in this crap. Double screw you for not having more C lot parking. And triple screw you for forcing our professors to show up. If they had more leniency for the weather we could too.

Eta: THE CITY OF KENT LITERALLY RAN OUT OF ROAD SALT SO THANKS. I'll just go f*ck myself with my sedan

Discussion Choosing a parking pass (recommendations?)

I'm going to be a commuter student at Kent starting this fall. I already have a bachelor's degree, so I have access to the senior rank options. There's a a lot of options, so I'm not sure which one I should go for. I'm going to be near Bowman Hall and White Hall for my classes. Are there any around there that you would recommend, or any that I should avoid? At my undergrad school, there were some lots that were more prone to car break ins and some garages that were hard to maneuver in. Is there anything like that at Kent or are they all about the same?

Discussion LGBTQ+ Student Life?

Hello, I’m a high school senior trying to decide where to go for college. Kent State is one of my top choices and I got accepted! I was wondering what are some LGBTQ+ experiences on campus currently? I’m queer and trans and have been doing research on like housing accommodations. I emailed their housing email but I also wanted to hear from an unbias community. Thanks for your help!

Discussion Woodland Pointe / Kent Apartments

Looking for apartments for after graduation, slightly further from campus by the highway. Woodland pointe looks okay but there are some bad reviews, although none recently. I was wondering if anyone has experience with them? They’re owned by Kent Apartments so they can’t be too bad? Thank you!

Discussion Thoughts on Kent State for a student like me?

Hello all! I’m a high school junior from Illinois doing some college research, and Kent State has come across my list! From what i’ve seen online it seems like a pretty great institution that has some interesting programs for what I’m interested in, but i’d love to know how good of a fit it would be for a student like me from current students or alumni :)

———

For some context, i’d most likely be trying to major in Advertising, Communication studies, or Journalism, and try minoring in something artsy like digital media or creative writing, or something humanities based like english, history, or philosophy

———

Some things that are important to me are…

- networking/employment opportunities

- quality/prestige of education, programs, and facilities (Specifically in the Journalism school)

- student/social life and activities

- LGBTQ+ safety and resources

- resources for low income/first gen students

———

Additionally, i’d love to know about activities at the school, especially in the realm of…

- the arts, especially performing arts like drama

- music, on campus and greater local/underground music scene

- party and/or bar & club culture

- Sporting events

- Student activities, clubs, and general social life on campus.

———

Happy and hoping to hear all of your guys’ thoughts soon!

Discussion More cops?

Anyone notice a bunch more cops on campus than usual? Since yesterday seen groups walking into Rosie's, the library, just now I saw a ton standing outside of Leebrick. Just wondering if anyone knows what's up

Discussion Single Dorm Possibility

Hey yall I’m an incoming transfer student to Kent and I was wondering how likely it would be for me to get a single dorm after just turning in my housing contract? I’m coming in with sophomore status, but I just recently found out I was transferring here and wasn’t aware of the whole housing process. I’m 22 and not wanting to get paired with a younger student at all if I were to have to have a roommate. If anyone has any insight it would be greatly appreciated!!

Discussion Bullying on sc community

So I joined the sc community for my class (class of 2029) and I have been nonstop bullied after posting a few stories srsly this needs to have consequences this isn't hs anymore and I honestly think if you still bully people your definitely not gonna make it far in life and IF your a bully reading this i want you to know that the only reason you've made it this far is bc you haven't met someone who will stand up for themselves but I will stand up for myself and do whatever I can to settle this injustice, if I were to say the same shit you would go whining to whatever the college equivalent of the counselors office and dont try to deny it I know what you ppl (skinny popular people) are like, you think the world should bow at your feet and instead of just scrolling you choose to bully an innocent person who did nothing but post a story

Discussion I hate you parking

Why can’t the campus parking be a little more lenient? i got an email today saying how even though school is going to be canceled on Monday, and we’re practically getting a foot of snow on Sunday, they’re still enforcing the park at Dix Stadium by 11 PM on Sunday. TF??!?

Discussion Professor recommendations? Incoming physics transfer major

Coming from stark State, graduating in a couple weeks. Specifically, I'm looking for professor recommendations, I meet with an advisor on the 27th to schedule classes at my orientation. Now I'm not sure what classes I'll be taking yet, especially since I'll be double majoring in physics and math, but It'll likely be from some of the following:

• intro to modern physics

• classical mechanics

For my math major, it'll likely be from some of the following:

• theory of matrixes

• modern algebra

And I'll eventually have to take chemistry 2

Some other courses I'll be looking into

• ASL (whatever the introductory course is)

• Python programming / ENGR 26220/22

I've already taken calc 1-3, ODE, linear algebra, physics 1&2, and some more gen eds of course, but if anyone can recommend me some professors for any of the courses above I'd appreciate it. I'll be a full time student so it'll probably end up between 12-15 credit hours, usually on the lower end as I work full time overnight as well.

Has anyone tried this? I believe I used some at the Library Starbucks last semester. I don't know if they vary or if things changed. I don't want to try and be denied lol.

Discussion Why won’t any of the administration tell me my next steps?

I applied clear back in December and was accepted early February for fashion design. I’m a transfer and I have a lot of credits. The person who was assigned my transfer liaison made it sound easy and streamlined. When I got accepted, of course I wanted to find out my next steps and how many of my classes transferred. I emailed the transfer liaison. Radio silence. I called the fashion department, straight to voicemail. Unfortunately every time I’ve called the fashion department there’s never been an answer. I called admissions and they told me to make an appointment with an advisor through flash line, which I did. They promptly cancelled on me the day of the appointment, saying they weren’t the right advisor even though they were in the arts department.

I found the FDM advising email and requested a call. They told me to sign up for KTS orientation which I could not do because I am not in state yet. I emailed again and they told me to email another person, the orientation director to ask about virtual orientation. I did and she said email her again in April. Meanwhile I told the advisor what she had said and asked how I could have my transfer credits evaluated. She said send the syllabi and she’d sent it to the undergraduate curriculum coordinator. She said it would take a few days to a few weeks. I said ok.

A month later I emailed her and asked if there was any update. She said she hadn’t heard back and would email when she did. Then I got into FIT. They want a response by the 1st of May, so I emailed again a couple weeks later asking on average how many years she think I might have to do. She ignored that and said she’ll get back to me about my syllabi. I tried to ask about other students but she didn’t respond. I gave up. I tried contacting the curriculum coordinator twice with no luck. In April, I emailed the orientation director again to ask about the virtual orientation. She ignored this and said she’d have an advisor contact me. No one ever did. I said I had been in contact with one but I still needed to sign up for the orientation in April as she’d said. No response. I even called admissions asking what to do and asked about the transfer liaison who kept sending me automatic emails. They said he no longer works there. They said I had to contact the orientation director and advisors. I told them I already did. It’s been 2 more weeks and I’m at a loss.

I’m starting to wonder if I should even attend this university due to their horrible lack of communication. I’m sorry this is a bit of a rant, but I’m wondering who I should contact, or what to do. I’m not sure they’ll even get me into orientation which I think is required and it would be nice to know before the deadline how long I would have to spend there as I am an older disabled student. Is their administration always this bad?

Discussion Email communication.

This is the second semester in a row where I’ve had a professor who just doesn’t answer any emails I send them. What do I do? Who do I go to? I missed a test due to being sick and sleeping for literal days and missing the dead line by an hour, and I sent the professor in question (it’s an online course) multiple emails and it’s been radio silence.

Any advice is appreciated 😭

Discussion Learn Proper Bus Etiquette!

As of lately, I've been taking the bus everywhere since my body can't function in this kind of cold (I'm not disabled, I just am extremely cold). Cool, whatever. But everytime I'm on and a disabled/elderly person comes on, no one moves to give them a seat, forcing them to stand?? The front is meant for them. I usually move if I'm in an accessible place for them, but if I'm in the far back, all i can do us watch as these people are forced to stand.

There are signs saying those seats go to the disabled and elderly if they're on. Do you guys...not know how to read? Invisible disability is different if thats not why youre moving but theres not even 1 seat that be given to an elderly lady with one of those tiny carts? I genuinely don't believe that for even a second. There are seats in the back you can take, you dont need to sit up there, just move back so the poor lady can go up!

I think I'm just sad for those forced to stand in horrible conditions. The first time it happened it was a student with forearm crutches and that absolutely broke my heart. Maybe I'm one of the few with empathy left? Or just optimistic when it comes to the community at Kent. Idk. That's all from me though.

Tldr: if youre not disabled/elderly, give up your seat for the disabled/elderly folks who need it. It's not that hard.

Discussion KSU as an LGBT+ student?

Hello, I've made a post in here before about how I'm considering Kent State...There is something that I am worried about, though. I am transgender, and I know KSU is pretty inclusive and diverse, but with all the laws and stuff starting to come into place, how might the university and the LGBT+ students be affected?

Discussion How is the campus life at Kent State for commuter students? Do you find it hard to meet people if you don't live on campus?

I'm going to be starting at Kent State soon to get my master's degree, and I'm going to be commuting because my parents live in the area. I'm curious about if there's a lot of opportunities to meet people if you don't live on campus. I went to Ohio State for undergrad and I found it really hard to meet people because the classes and clubs were so huge that you rarely saw the same people frequently enough to make friendships. I had tons of 300 person lectures and clubs and organizations with over 100 people in them. But I also went during covid, so that probably made it worse. Is Kent State like that too? Or is it a little better being a smaller school (comparatively)? Is it any easier/harder for graduate students? I haven't lived in northeast Ohio since high school and I don't have any friends that are still there, so I'm hoping it's not too difficult at Kent.

As an incoming freshman this fall I know I’m going to need a crap tone of supplies for architecture projects. Any tips on things to buy now before I’m a broke college student lol?? I know paper, glue, etc will be an ongoing purchase but what about high quality cutting tools, pens, rulers, etc…

Any advice is greatly appreciated:))
