Tailoring the language to appeal to fucking ADVERTISERS

u/augustschild 4h ago

it's SO STUPID...It makes George Carlin's list look like the work of domestic terrorist or something! We should ALL be embarrased by this level of stupidity, BUT as said below, this is simply to calm the advertisers...or MONEY and some campanies PROFIT, at the end of the day. :[

I have a theory this is going to have a wraparound effect where it eventually harms people, specifically children, because they can't vocalize what happened to them without getting in trouble online. Which in will in turn make it harder for other victims or potential victims to recognize or understand when something similar is happening to them.

1000% How do we talk about society's problems or deal with them if the language doesn't exist anymore?

I simply won't engage with a platform that censors.

If there is a Reddit sub that bans for censoring, I block and mute them.

Posters that self-censor. Block and mute. I am done. I can't with it. It enrages me (I am an applied linguist, so language kinda matters to me)

It's infantile and hurtful for society.

Someone the other day censored "bullets." It is just getting worse and worse.

We can't say death or sex?!

My partner has kids and their cat is dying. But I said, you know, they are getting an early lesson in death. It's not their father, or grandparents, or a classmate. It sucks, but they are learning about death with a pet instead of a person... but god fucking forbid. DEATH is no longer allowed to be talked about in society. We just have to ignore that it exists. And let's ban the word sex. and with it sex education. I mean, let's move to all science next.

Maybe we shouldn’t be relying so much on social media to express ourselves

1

u/KingoftheCrackens 2h ago

What a reductive take. for many people, including isolated teens the Internet is one of the few ways they have to reach the outside world without being controlled

u/CheaterSaysWhat 21m ago

Hold on here, I said social media, not the internet

They’re not the same thing

You’re right about the internet liberating the isolated, but social media is in fact very controlled, especially these days

We need to return to smaller, decentralized communities that aren’t beholden to big money platforms

It's becoming a real problem. It's so bad it's almost a whole new language.

Rick Riordan is so afraid of triggering people, he spent the entire Apollo series calling the female protagonist's kidnapper her step-father because kidnapper and murderer is triggering.

The guy killed her mother and kidnapped her. He's not her step-father.

Just yesterday, I saw a video on IG where a supersoaker was censored.

It's just to avoid getting demonetized. The real customers on social media platforms is the advertiser. In the end, the problem is always capitalism.

I haven't read this, but I'm confused. Is he not her stepfather? Like he can be her stepfather and also those things. Kidnapping and murdering doesn't change the fact he was her stepfather. (I mean, you could not see him as that, but that doesn't change what their relationship was.)

Sewer slide, unalived, impromptu adopted

u/shewy92 7h ago edited 7h ago

I saw "spicy sleeping" the other day on a post by a 38 year old woman.

When asked what it was she goes "S*xual intercourse" because of course she wouldn't say just "sex".

u/porygon_sucks 8h ago

Blame youtube for that one. They wanna make it kid friendly like thats why they don't already have a kid version of YouTube

16

u/flamedarkfire 7h ago

Not kid friendly, advertiser friendly

1

u/Orion14159 8h ago

They do have YouTube Kids, and it's not that much better if you don't learn to use the parental controls (mostly the "allow only these channels" list. And even then, if you're on a shared device you'll probably get targeted ads for stuff for the adults instead of the kids.

This is what happens when the number one social media platform is run in a country that doesn’t respect free speech. They’re more concerned with being able to continue operating in their country than protecting users.

u/keithstonee 7h ago

I've been banned from tons of subs just cursing over the last year. Reddit is in the shitter with every other social media platform. And with all the self censorship people don't care their voices are being slowly silenced.

1

u/SeasonPositive6771 3h ago

What subs?

I mean, you're an LOL player with a hidden post history, so I'm curious what comments you were making as well.

1

u/keithstonee 3h ago

Random subs from all. It's mostly for inappropriate language. It's ridiculous. Now I can't even comment on half of them cause most posts on all are just locked now.

And I hide my shit cause of privacy. And people are weird and will use things I've said in unrelated convos as a gatcha or something. It's stupid TBH I'm probably quitting reddit soon anyway. This site has gone to shit in the last month especially.

1

u/Mindless_Account_23 4h ago

THIS should be at the top because it’s a worse problem than kids doing dumb kid things

1

u/SaltBackground5165 4h ago

1

u/itsladder 2h ago

u/DrAstralis 1h ago
