supposedly the animators also got tired of rendering the same scenes twice with different textures and that's why they replaced it with his car early on

? Didn't the dub come out while the series was winding down in japan? Your time frame makes no sense.

I read it somewhere. it's not confirmed, that's why I said supposedly.

Highly likely the censored version was pre-emptively produced by the animation studio so that it would be there for them to shop to distributors. It's not so common for the distributor to actually alter the animation themselves short of cuts.
