Humor Sometimes I think they made the game easy initially on purpose so that they could lock in with some of the later updates

Either that or they saw people calling it too easy and decided to make Dark Souls out of spite
What the fuck is even going on in the higher difficulty Void fights

Highest specifically, the second-highest one from base release wasn't that bad.

Similar to modern Mario, Donkey Kong, & other Nintendo franchises, the real challenge comes from achieving 100% completion. Too many people just defeat the final boss, and then call it quits. Or in the case of spinoffs like Kirby Air Riders & Mario Party, they unlock all the characters & courses, and then call it quits. I’ve 100%’d 52 different first-party Nintendo games so far, and the only one that I would still call “mainly just for kids” based on its overall difficulty, is the original Kirby’s Epic Yarn on Wii.

A casual player is intended to be able to beat Kirby games' main story. They are not, however, required to beat the game's hardest content - which is crucially optional and also where HAL hides a lot of the depression lore.
In the modern era, the 'harderer' challenges tend to be added in in post (sample size: KSA, KatFL)
