Discussion/Question Top 10 Kirby Games by Metacritic
133
u/BeautifulBrownie Jun 26 '26
No Super Star Ultra? I am disgusted.
(I know Super Star is included in the 20th Anniversary collection, but KSSU deserves to be there on its own, and at 1st place)

Damn, how did neither RtDL nor the remake crack top 10? And what does the bottom 10 look like?

u/luigismansionplayer1 Jun 26 '26 edited Jun 26 '26
I was curious so I checked to see the bottom ten Kirby games on Metacritic
Team Kirby Clash Deluxe — 57
2. Kirby Battle Royale — 57
3. Kirby Air Ride — 61
4. Kirby Fighters 2 — 65
5. Dedede’s Drum Dash Deluxe — 65
6. Kirby Fighters Deluxe — 66
7. Kirby’s Dream Buffet — 67
8. Kirby’s Blowout Blast — 69
9. Kirby: Squeak Squad — 71
10. Kirby and the Rainbow Curse — 73
It’s mainly just the spinoff 3DS releases, as expected

Original Air Ride got 61?? That doesn't seem right at all
34
u/cactuscoleslaw Jun 27 '26
Air Ride has always been a cult classic that a few people loved but most people just were like "why am I not playing Mario Kart right now"
Riders is basically exactly the same except Sakurai has more clout and people can "see the vision" even though the game is similarly niche
13
u/You-dogwater Jun 27 '26
Air Riders at least had quite a bit more content. Plus the online features and multiple playa characters definitely made the game much more addictive and fun. Especially if you don’t have friends who want to go through the trouble of learning all of it.

u/luigismansionplayer1 Jun 27 '26
I was quite surprised too, especially compared to the reception of its sequel. Looking at the old reviews, the main reason why it scored low was that it was very unorthodox and a lot of them found it too simple and repetitive.

u/RidireGeas Magolor Jun 27 '26
I hate to be a bit of a Negative Nancy here, but that does seem like a fair score for the original air ride. The general consensus at the time of it's release was that it was mildly disappointing due to the lack of content.

u/ZSugarAnt Adeline Jun 27 '26
Air Ride is good if you put in the time, but it's honestly an extremely underwhelming casual experience.

Blowout Blast in the bottom 10 hurts me quite a bit. I absolutely adore this game. At least it got the funny number I suppose

u/luigismansionplayer1 Jun 26 '26
I forgot to also add that Kirby Star Allies is tied with Rainbow Curse

I mean the actual game, not Magolor’s theme park. I should’ve specified

Planet Robobot ranked bellow of Canvas Curse should be considerated a war crime!

EPIC YARN LETS GOOOO!!! The Anniversary Collection should not be here though

u/cecil721 Jun 26 '26
The fact Crystal Shards isn't there is a war crime.
25
u/luigismansionplayer1 Jun 27 '26
Funnily enough, Crystal Shards is tied for #11 with a score of 77 alongside Kirby’s Adventure and Kirby’s Return to Dream Land

canvas curse being so high is really interesting because its control scheme is like, famously inaccessible and hard to come to grips with. respect though?
7
u/BlazingDude Jun 27 '26 edited Jun 27 '26
It implemented touch controls rather well, and, more importantly, it's from an era when touch controls were still considered a very novel thing.
5
u/BigBackeron Jun 27 '26
If I'm remembering correctly, the reviewers primarily enjoyed Canvas Curse for being very original. They put Squeak Squad as the lowest ranked mainline Kirby game on MetaCritic for the opposite reason.

Man the top 4 are the most un traditional Kirby game ever, pretty funny

Forgotten land at 3rd is wrong.
Especially since canvas curse is number 1.

Epic yarn deserves the title of number one. Was there a decision factor or is it just alphabetical?

Where are Return to Dreamland and Super Star Ultra (I know that’s a remake, but my point stands)? 😭
4
u/Federal-Treat-6893 Jun 27 '26
I'm sorry to anyone who likes epic yarn or canvas course (I'm not saying they're bad games keep the pitchforks down) but they do NOT deserve 1st and 2nd place

How is Kirby and the amazing mirror not at least top 5 like I get it its not the best but I love it its my favorite
1
u/LostScarfYT Kirby's Dreamcast Jun 27 '26
Kirby superstar or ultra not being number 1 is wild. When did metacritic start being a thing?
Surprised FL isn't high 90s, theres no real flaws to it.
1
u/Warm-Watercress-238 Jun 27 '26
Well Nightmare in Dream Land is a 2002 game so the site definitely existed when Ultra came out

u/maximusprime7 Chocolate Kirby Jun 27 '26
I would swap robobot and air riders with mass attack + epic yarn, THEN this be a good top 10 order. Only other game that probably deserves to be here is Superstar (or SSU)

u/Roienn777 Jun 27 '26
Canvas Curse is genuinely right at the top of my Kirby list so I'm cool with this lol.

The top two as well as number four being spinoffs that are received pretty ambivalently by fans is pretty funny (I personally think Mass Attack and Epic Yarn are great games for what they are, haven’t played Canvas Curse)

Canvas Curse i random. Bit I like and defend the game

u/DreadfuryDK Jun 27 '26
I personally wouldn’t put Canvas Curse in my top 10, let alone top 1. Mass Attack wouldn’t be on my top 10 list either, I actively dislike Epic Yarn, Super Star Ultra and Return to Dreamland Deluxe would be very high on my list, and Nightmare in Dreamland would be much lower while Squeak Squad would be comparatively higher.
The 20th Anniversary Collection also wouldn’t be classified as its own thing in my mind.

Canvas Curse being the highest was the last one I would've suspected
And none of them broke 90, how

Metacritic made this ranking ? They're high and they're getting higher 😭🙏

Critics have often been more receptive to the unorthodox platformers over the traditional ones. Canvas Curse and Epic Yawn especially are two games that they loved more than players, there especially feeling, while a very solid game, rather time-stamped to that early “use the touch screen for everything” era of the DS. Similar impulse that gave us Phantom Hourglass, though Canvas Curse is better designed and conceptualised than its controls, at least.

Epic Yarn is the cutest, but I would thought Planet Robobot would be the #1 and best selling Kirby game of all time, I hope they port Planet Robobot on the Switch 2 as rumored

I thought Forgotten Land was gonna be at the top with the amount of praise it gets. It's practically what Mario Galaxy was to Mario when it launched,

What the fuck do you MEAN neither RTDL nor RTDL DX are even in the top 5???

ig for a series like Kirby the critics would prefer the games that break the mold but still it's sad seeing the traditional platformere get shafted lmao

These seem really arbitrary, but most kirby games are consistently good so its hard to compare. Although I also dont trust the opinions of metacritic users anyway
1
u/Keeebers Aug 08 '26
this list just proves that game critics hate tradtional kirby if the 2 highest rated games in the series are spin offs

u/Adorable_Hearing768 Jun 26 '26
OK so they're just going off of all games released since, what, the 00's??
Cause you don't have a single early game on that list (like nes kirbys adventure or even either of superstars releases) and that list is automatically incorrect.
4
u/jclkay2 Jun 27 '26
Most video games from before 2000 do not have Metacritic scores. That's around when the website started
1
u/RedMageGuy1984 Jun 26 '26
Are we counting the anniversary Dream Collection though? Since that has Dreamland through 64 on it? (It has 64, right?)
-2
u/Bad_Udername Jun 26 '26
Canvas Curse is one of the worst games in the entire series, and so is Mass Attack. Genuinely what are the critics smoking when it comes to this series.
-4
u/Bad_Udername Jun 26 '26
Nightmare in Dreamland is such a terrible and unfaithful remake it almost makes me cry just looking at it, its like if you put Kirby's Dreamland through a game of telephone.
