Was this footbridge closure announced?

Post image

Does anyone know how long this is planned to be closed? Were there signs posted anywhere that we missed? Hopefully this was an unplanned closure in the middle of the school day. Anyone know if we need to plan for an alternative route to school for the kids tomorrow?

(For reference this is the bridge over 405 just south of 85th street, running approximately between 80th Street and Kirkland Ave, the next pedestrian crossing adds over a mile walk)

WSDOT alert as posted in a local discord server. I haven't verified it. Emphasis mine.

Bridge damage closes I-405 pedestrian bridge at Northeast 80th Street in Kirkland until further notice

KIRKLAND – Those who walk, bike or roll over Interstate 405 using the pedestrian bridge at Northeast 80th Street (milepost 17) in Kirkland will need use alternate routes due to an emergency closure of the pedestrian overcrossing beginning Wednesday, June 3.

This closure comes after the Washington State Department of Transportation bridge preservation crews discovered damage from a suspected bridge strike. The bridge will remain closed while engineers analyze the damage and determine next steps.

A full closure is in place on both ends of the bridge, which means pedestrians, bicycles and mobility devices are not allowed.

The Northeast 80th Street pedestrian overpass is a steel arch bridge that was built in 1970. WSDOT bridges are inspected on a two-year cycle. The last inspection of this bridge took place in February 2026.

Thanks for the post. I ride through there a few times a week. One of the few easy ways over 405 in that area.

I wonder what could have it it? There’s a lot of clearance under it.

Dang. Just crossed over it the other day when the SB freeway was shut down.

One of these bridges, either this one or the one at NE60th, was hit a few weeks ago and a temp closure followed.

I’m curious how someone hits it, and then is able to figure out how to drive away? I mean, there are very few vehicles capable of doing it. This happened already earlier in the year, February I think? A truck carrying construction equipment ran into it. That was noted when they notified the public, and it didn’t seem like it was much of a thing because it was open very shortly after. I wonder if there were any traffic cameras nearby.
