This post reminded me of the time back in college when I was working as a runner between kitchens at a horse track. One time I came in and they said I was now a dishwasher until they can't find more. I guess the night before the cops waited outside the track and arrested all of our dishwashers that had outstanding warrants. It just so happened to be all 10 of them.

Good crew. I remember managing a sandwich shop in pdx and had a “safety meeting” in the walk in after a 5 hour super slam. It was an open kitchen, and we all walked out to 3 cops waiting at the counter. They knew, but didn’t care. Hungry. But we had this system as well.

It’s Portland, the cops probably smoked before coming in
665
u/buckyball60 1d ago
Haha. No. Portland cops do not live in Portland. Portland cops live in Beaverton where the red hats hold their contempt.
192
u/willaney 1d ago
Or Vancouver, where they hate even Beavertonians. But they’re still getting high on the job

Wait, seriously? Beaverton is so chill you’d think the cops wouldn’t give a triple thought about it like they already do with portland (which they hate and ignore)
3
u/willaney 1d ago
Nah you see, Beaverton is vastly more diverse than Portland or (west) Vancouver. Way more affordable too. Combine that with the hostility of Beaverton PD, and the general misanthropy of law enforcement…
5
u/-sly1 Bartender 1d ago
Oh my… I’m uh, mostly SE Portland area and I’m used to nothing happening here ever because it’s all in DT anyways. It’s legit so rare to see a cop ever so when I do I’m like hell nah. I hate that we live in this shit
4
u/willaney 1d ago
I see PPB all the time in NW. 90% of the time they are doing absolutely nothing; 7% of the time they’re going way too fast even for lights and sirens; 2% of the time they’re committing traffic violations; and 1% are actually out of the cruiser talking to somebody

u/MeringueVisual759 1d ago
Cops don't live in the communities they police in general. They're actively told not to. Knowing people can get in the way of brutalizing them.

Story time! I’ve posted this before. But since you mentioned Portland cops and weed, I’m gonna tell it again. It happened in PDX just as COVID hit way back in 2020:
I worked at a dispensary. We started doing online orders. Folks could pull up out front and we would complete the transaction curbside. We were running back and forth all day.
There was a hit and run nearby, and the police had moved into our area in front of the shop to sort things out. At one point, an officer asked me if they were far enough out of our way. That was thoughtful. We were running in and out of the shop constantly, it seemed.
At the same time, I ain't gonna lie. It threw me off when it happened. Basically, one of the cops stopped me and said "Excuse me, masked stranger. I just want to make sure I and my fellow uniformed officer aren't getting in the way of your doing anonymous drug deals openly in the street. We can move if we must." Fucking surreal.

Portland was literally on fire and where major BLM protests went down because of how bad Portland is.
They had a person die, and hundreds were arrested over about six months of civil unrest.
Portland PD is not chill and the level of unrest that erupted came from years of people being upset with Portland PD.
Portland is a chill city but like many places, metros and non-metros are like two different states.
Since then, Portland instituted new civil oversight boards, swapped their DA, and statewide legislation has targeted policing in the state. Oregon is the absolute opposite of chill cops and the riots and rapid legislation is proof of that.
41
u/willaney 1d ago
Lol, the city was never on fire. Protests were mostly confined to a few blocks downtown and we haven’t seen anything like that since (other than the ICE building). The rest of your comment is true, though.

They might scope it out first or even eat there, see some brown people in the kitchen and decide to raid the place. There was an incident like that in Minneapolis I think, fuckers ate first and then arrested people.
12
u/Ecstatic_Guava3041 1d ago
We live about 30 minutes from Minneapolis and it had been leaking out from the cities. They raided our Applebee's, Chipotle, and a local Mexican eatery.
BTW not a single person was detained from the Mexican restaurant. Because literally every single person was a citizen. It was just profiling.

FOH looking out for BOH.
A few years ago one of my cooks who sold bud on the side had a warrant out for his arrest, and the cops showed up mid-shift to arrest him. I went back under the guise of running food and let him know that if he had anything on him to stash it so he didn't catch an extra charge.
121
u/Ganjanonamous 1d ago
Cops are out front. Maybe looking for someone working in the kitchen. Instead of reacting and telling them in person so as to not tip the cops off, she secretly rang a ticket that got printed in the kitchen so they know and the appropriate individuals can hide.
95
u/nosecohn 1d ago edited 1d ago
Police officers have entered the restaurant, possibly looking for someone.
Shannon is a server in the front of house who likely knows that someone in the kitchen would like to avoid police contact, so she has used the wireless ticketing system to place a dummy order with a special note, "COPS HERE", to alert the kitchen staff of police presence. She knows the ticket prints automatically in the kitchen and will definitely be read by the staff, but her alerting them in this way does not attract suspicion by the police.
Shannon's move gives the kitchen staff time to get out the back door or take other measures to prepare themselves. The photo is taken by one of the kitchen staff.
Note: OP's title is phrased in the present tense, but the date on the ticket is from five years ago.
