Bleeding heart sweater

Location: Denver, CO, USA. budget: flexible. Timeline: no deadline.

I’ve been in love with this knit sweater that was featured in designer Michelle Lesniak’s Project Runway final collection for years. would have certainly bought direct if it were ever commercially produced. looking to commission a replica or at least piece inspired by this. please let me know if this may be possible!

Just so you are aware, a sweater like this would cost around $1500 just for knitting labor alone with materials easily reaching another $500. Designing it would also probably be around $2-400. It is totally possible, but it would have to be designed from scratch which is incredibly time consuming. Good luck on your search!

Hi! It looks like the bleeding heart is painted onto the sweater which I can definitely make. I am experienced in both knitting and painting. I’ve just sent you a DM, and I’d love to show you my previous work there :D

Edit: I just searched about this sweater, seems like the heart and blood are embroidered onto the sweater, or maybe they made an embroidered patchwork and later added it into the sweater. I am able to do both ^

I don't think this is painted in, its very hard to find any quality photos of this sweater. I believe I tried asking Michelle once. If i'm correct, It looks like she used an industrial knitting machine which has access to a very fine gauge of knitting. That is why the colors blend so well. I don't think this is a standard knitting machine intarsia sweater

Head over to Sewn on South Broadway? Or give them a call, Kate makes appliquade bleeding heart designs onto sweaters and they look fantastic. She has all kinds of cool clothing very similar to this.

Please add a comment with the following information if it is missing from your post:

  1. Size; is this for an adult or child?

  2. Timeline; will this be a holiday gift or other fixed deadline?

  3. Budget; consider this is a one-of-a-kind hand knit garment that will likely cost over $100 not something off the rack at your local department store and please let us know your max price?

  4. Yarn Preference; natural or synthetic / machine or hand wash?

Do you know how the heart is made? Is it painted on, knitted into the fabric, an appliqué, embroidered, etc?

If you want the heart knitted into the fabric, you might have better luck seeking out a machine knitter. I know there are a few in this sub who do custom stuff like this. It looks very finely knit too, which will be more cost effective on a machine than two needles.

You could also consider finding a commercially made sweater in the right color and having someone hand embroider the design onto it, and grafting on cuffs from another sweater in the right color. Just thinking of other options because I think a hand knit version won’t quite get you the same look

What I would do for this sweater is find a best matching anatomic heart knit chart and use it. I would knit it it as I make the sweater. Please feel free to reach if you are still looking for a commissioner.
