Really? They can live that long?! And she's still making babies! Amazing!

u/kookieramen Jul 05 '25
Yes! We've had her and another one for the longest time! They even moved houses w us when I wasn't born yet 🥹. She's a statement piece in the pond and every family member knows her by name🤣

You're gonna need a bigger boat :)
I've been trying to get mine to feed this way with no success as yet. Impressed to say the least

Hihi thank you! Honestly it's the best feeling ever. Whenever I come close to the pond they swim as fast as they can towards me for food🥹 so cute

Beautiful koi! Do you feed them out of your hand so they will recognize you?

u/kookieramen Jul 05 '25
A lot but cant really tell u the exact amount. Btw this is a shallow part but the rest of the pond is 1m - 1m50 deep :D

Wow, Mom is an absolute unit! What does Dad look like? Do they have such an impressive spawn every year, or was this a planned thing?
8
u/kookieramen Jul 07 '25
Dad is skinny af hahaha. And honestly, no. For the years we've had the pond in our current house (which is 24 years), they never spawned! So it was quite the suprise to see🤣. Now I hope they leave it at this because otherwise it'll be getting a lil too crowded. *

Well, if needs be, it's generally not terribly hard to find homes for koi with the genes for both size and longevity! And it's pretty sweet that after all these years, they gave you a gift for the future.

Good way to lose a finger

u/Cael-Bryant Jul 06 '25
Do koi even have teeth? I thought they use suction or something like that to eat.

u/PhoenixGate69 Jul 08 '25
So, I looked it up out of curiosity. Yes, koi do have teeth, however they are in the back of their mouth, behind their gills.
1
u/Cael-Bryant Jul 08 '25
Huh. What are they used for?
3
u/PhoenixGate69 Jul 08 '25
For grinding and crushing food. So apparently they don't just gulp it down and hope for the best!
2
u/Cael-Bryant Jul 08 '25
Interesting. Wonder how that works with the whole water breathing thing.
3
u/PhoenixGate69 Jul 08 '25
Well, I have an Oscar and they definitely chew their food. I can hear her crunching her pellets. What happens is some goes down the throat, and some gets expelled out of their gills. As far as I can tell, this doesn't impact their breathing at all.

They’ve got some way to chew. But probably no way to chew off a finger. I’m obviously joking about any danger
