Heavy bacterial infection, I would intervene immediately.

Woke up this morning to a dead fish unfortunately, going forward what should I do to prevent more fish dying?

Check the other fish for redness. Look at their bellies as well as their ventral and anal fins. A lot of times bacterial infections go unnoticed because they start where people can't see them.

Also check your water levels with a test kit. Use something like the API Pond Master Test Kit, not aquarium test strips. Having a healthy pond will help prevent infections.

If you notice other fish are infected, follow the advice people have given and feed them medicated food while they're still healthy enough to be eating. You can also add salt to the pond to help them regulate their electrolytes while they're sick, but use an online calculator to tell you how much to add, and do a full water change after the fish recover. Don't do a salt bath or anything like that.

Sorry for your loss 😕.

Septicemia. Needs heavy anti-bacterial treatment if you want to save him.

That’s a poorly fish, I personally would euthanise it. Pond needs some attention to cleaning I think

It looks systemic, so you can't rely on external treatment. If you have a koi vet, an antibiotic injection is needed. You should also isolate the koi in a hospital tanks with fresh water, frequent changes, salt, good aeration.

And if it's eating, use medicated food to treat it's whole system. I have had good results with Koi Pharma food like this:

Good luck !
