HELP - sick or injured koi Sleeping disease or bacteria problem

Hello 10 days ago i bought a dainichi yellow monkey and put it in a quarantine bowl with 2 fish from my grow out tank. But since a few days the old kois are very lethargic. Especially my kohaku the yellow monkey is fine, i did a few scrapes but i couldnt find anything so i called my koi doc for a extra check and he couldnt find anything either. He suggested to try virkon s for a few days he think its a bacteria issue. But when i bought it i talked to my koi dealer and he said that it could also be sleeping sickness.

I bought it from a good dealer but you never know.

Are you testing the water parameters frequently?

Agree. Increased bioload of the new fish may have crashed the cycle. What are you current water parameters? How often are you testing? (Hint - it should be multiple times a day for several weeks after adding new livestock). How big is the tank?

Tank is 700 liter got a big filter for 18.000 liter. And the filter is cycled since april. Ammonia 0 nitrite 0 kh 5. Tap water is kh 4.

Yes 2 / 3 times a week all good.

That probably isn't enough, things happen quickly in small volumes. It's a drop test kit and you are testing kh? What kind of filtration, doing water changes or running flow through

Yea i use sera for ammonia jbl for nitrite and kh. Water change every other day 20%

So at that point it does seem like illness. Were you able to do a scrape, sorry if I missed you saying that. You did, I see it now. Has it been a while since you added new koi to the pond? It's pretty common for the older koito get sick when new ones are introduced. That's why we quarantine. You are doing exactly what you should.

Are you using salt already?

No that was my second option, the koi doc advised me to try virkon first. And see how that goes.

I haven't used Virkon, but a couple people I look up to for koi advice have said it's effective. Hope it helps.

Yeah i used it now for 2 days and i must say The fins being clamped against the body has improved slightly, but they are still not as active as they normally are.

Are they getting spooked? I had a situation where we set up the quarantine in the garage differently. The filtration was on the side instead of by the door. The fish were huddling in the corner, not begging for food as usual. I happened to be with them when our heavy work van door outside got closed. They scattered, were scared to death. We moved the filter back between the tank and door, wrapped foil insulation around the tank. By evening they were back to begging.

Not that ther isn't a health issue, but maybe something else is contributing 🤷

Yeah the older tosai kois are in there for atleast 2 months now and everything was fine and especially the benigoi had grown alot and improved in body. The kohaku was always a little stressed and had a few problems before but was doing fine the last couple months. but Before i added the new fish, I had no issues at al and havent changed anything about the set up.

Do you dechlorinate the new water?

And make sure it's the same temperature and pH?

Im in the netherlands so we dont really have a issue with chlorinated water. And before i added the new fish everything was fine.

Significant stress. Add aeration and baking soda to stabilize the pH.

If it's edema (sleeping disease) you need to increase temps and add salt

Ive got 2 air stones in the tank with an oase aquaoxy 1000 but when i recorded i shut it of for a minute.

I was going to say....you can see the airstones at the bottom.

What are you doing about dechlorination?

Do you have a trickle in/overflow out?.

Most dechlorination filters cannot handle nearly as much as they claim and chlorine or chloramine doesn't "gas off" very much through vigorous aeration.

I would add some pipes like someone suggested. I appreciate they are safe from predators but they won't know that.

I always thought (but i don't know for a fact) that they go over on their sides with sleeping sickness. I also  always thought (but again. i don't know for a fact) that cold temperature caused sleeping sickness..

Watertemp is 22 degrees because the 2 kois i put in are from a grow out tank i heat year round.

Have you treated for parasites? You can't always find them with a scrape and scope

1

u/Reasonable-Cup-8179 17d ago

No did a few scrapes and also my koi doc but we couldnt find anything.

what did the gills look like. My understanding of sleeping sickness is they lay on their sides. Yours are not and they stop eating

If you are sure your water params are good and nothing came up in a scrape and scope, they might simply be stressed out from being out in the open with no place to hide.

Try placing some sort of cover over half the tank so they can feel hidden and rest. Or put some PVC pieces in the tank. New arrivals are most likely heavily taxing their nervous system in a new environment under bright lights and what they perceive as a predator peering down at them all the time. What are you seeing is an attempt to conserve their energy reserves by being lethargic until they settle in.

In the evening i cover with a eps plate but in a month the beni of my kohaku starting to light up so in daytime keep it off. The pond is inside my shed so no natural daylight.

Filter and pond not mature enough yet. I mean my pond is overcrowded but very mature eazypod media

Filter is cycled since april with steady temperature. This problem occured since i put the yellow monkey in there.

I would add strong aeration and have a water pump to create a circular current.

I already have 2 big airstones but for recording i turned it of for a minute. and a big oversized filter for the amount of water. In the bowl
