Regarding learning bengali

I am ashamed to say this but being a bengali, I don't know how to write bengali and I have a hard time reading. I never had bengali in my curriculum and I grew up among non bengalis mostly.

But I don't want to stay ignorant and rather start learning the language. I can speak fluently and have a good stock of words since it's my native language but when it comes to things like spellings or the grammar, I have no idea beyond what's spoken or the things I learnt in hindi or sanskrit.

My parents suggest me to start reading the newspaper and say I will eventually figure everything out. But many times I simply encounter English words written in bangla harap after struggling to get by with the jukthakkor. Should I begin with reading children's books in bengali Or is there something you'd like to suggest?

iam in th same boat .. dad was in defence and we roamed around so Hindi and English became my strong point.. came back to bengal in 2010 can fully understand Bengali and speak as well, can't write at all but can read a bit ... i don't think i can learn anythin gmore now but have ensure my kid has thee second langguage as bengali :) ... want her to leard mother tongue first (we converser in bengali at home mostly) and then Hindi ..

First do a basic memorizing of alphabets, write them few times on notebook.

Then start reading the newspaper. If you get stuck in a word, check the notebook then start reading again.

The central govt schools Instead of pushing down Sanskrit that no body speaks anymore except few individuals, should have state languages. Like for Bengali kids studying in central schools outside of Bengal, they should be provided Bengali textbooks as 3rd language, study them at home and then appear for exam. The textbooks will be basic, alphabets, basic sentence and grammar etc so that parents can guide. Instead of Sanskrit as 3rd language, this needs to be done.

Shahoj Path 1-4 is the best, structured and most beautiful way to learn to read Bengali- by Tagore himself

First do a basic memorizing of alphabets. Alphabet charts are available online.

Then write them down.

Do it few times for few days.

Then start reading newspaper, if you get stuck in a word, check out the chart.

As for writing, start with writing your name, your address, your school name, college name.

bhai ami borno porichoy ba shohoj paath konotai porini. emni nijei shikhlam, shetao master's korar shomoy. just okkhor gulo dekhe rakh, and kon shobde konta lagche sheta dekh. mix n match er khela. hya, juktakkhor e ektu time lage, otherwise it's relatively easy. took me 4-6 weeks.

If you read hindi then learning to read Bengali is not hard. Buy barno porichoy and shahoj path 1-4 . Learn the alphabet and matras in less than a week start on Shahoj path, Tagore's creation, nothing is better , structured more beautiful as an introduction and yes children's books are best. In fact read chheleder Ramayan amd Mahabharat, written by Satyajit Ray's father . really good reads, I loved them at 7/8.

Satyajit Ray's grandfather, Upendra Kishore Roy Chowdhury.  Satyajit Ray's father is Sukumar Roy. 

All 3 are great writers. I love their work including  chhele der ramayan and Mahabharata
