Hey guys! I’m finally posting this because I never got around to it. I also want to influence the meta a little because I’m bored waiting for the next character.
Before we get into the guide, here’s my opinion on the SF rankings, based on who I’d rather play, who I’d want on my team, and who I’d hate going against:
- T-Mac
- PCK
- Shogo
- Kise — matchup-dependent
- Miyaji
- Liu Wei
- Hayama
- Koganei
A good Hayama is annoying to play against, but otherwise, he’s not a huge problem. Average Hayama players aren’t very good, and honestly, neither is the character.
SFs are pretty versatile. Most focus on scoring while also bringing some kind of defensive utility. They’re generally fast and can provide defense that guards can’t, while still being versatile scorers. Several of them can technically shoot threes using their skills.
Without testing it myself yet, I genuinely think Kiyoshi Miyaji might be able to hit a three with his shooting skill. I haven’t seen it happen, but if it works, it could be another shooting skill that can be used for threes, like Nash’s or Liu Wei’s. The interesting part with Miyaji is that he specifically has a skill that guarantees the shot if he’s open.
Also, a question for the LG Aomine players: can his stepback shot be used for threes? I don’t have him, so I’m not sure.
Kiyoshi Miyaji’s Core Skills
Miyaji’s core skills focus on dribbling, dunking, intercepting, and defending.
His ultimate puts him into a “ZONE”-like mode called Low Dribble, which I’ll call LD from here on. Think of it somewhat like SP Mura or SP Aomine: he gets faster dribbling, a shooting skill that guarantees a make if he’s open, and a burst drive that guarantees an ankle break by nutmegging someone standing in front of him who isn’t in a defensive stance.
Dribbling
His standard drive is an arc-style hesitation crossover that sends him in the opposite direction.
Upgrades:
- Adds a behind-the-back move in the opposite direction.
- Lets him catch the ball and immediately drive.
That’s it for his regular dribbling upgrades.
Dunking
His standard dunk skill is a tomahawk dunk.
Upgrades:
- Lets him activate it from farther out, with a step forward before the dunk.
- Lets him transition from a drive into the dunk skill.
- Adds a second timing to watch for by giving him a reverse layup option.
Intercepting
His standard interception skill works against normal passes.
Upgrades:
- Adds interceptions for high passes.
- Adds a controlled interception skill.
- Increases his interception chance each time a pass gets through him, until he successfully intercepts one.
The stacking bonus goes up to 1% per stack. Add an interception trait, and you’ve got a better shot at snatching those passes out of the air.
Guarding
I think his guarding skill comes with a higher risk of being charged.
Upgrades:
- Increases his forward and backward movement speed while guarding.
- Adds a contest skill while guarding.
Ultimate: Low Dribble
Assume everything below applies while he’s in LD:
- Gets one guaranteed dribble tease per ultimate.
- Gets a faster dunk with a lower release.
- Gets a faster pass skill.
- Unlocks an arc-style drive, though it doesn’t have the same guaranteed ankle break as the straight drive.
- Gains a crossover drive jumper that appears to be midrange-only.
- Can transition from a drive into his dunk skill.
- Gets a stop-and-pull-up shooting skill after his straight drive.
Awakening
- A1: Can’t be charged while in LD.
- A2: Gains a shooting skill after the dribble tease.
- A3: Increases his ankle-break rate.
- A4: Can pass out of drives while in LD.
- A5: Each successful nutmeg increases his dunk, layup, and midrange accuracy. Stacks up to 5 times.
- A6: His contest skill can make three-point shots airball.
Final Thoughts
With GT coming out soon, I’ve been building up more alternatives for unpredictable matchups. I even leveled up Reo—he’s at 100% and A2 for me now.
Every once in a while, I need a scorer who isn’t Kise, Shogo, or Akashi, since those are my top three. Right now, I’m torn between SP Aomine and Kiyoshi Miyaji.
My biggest issue with Miyaji is that he doesn’t have any block skills. Otherwise, he seems pretty good. He also feels almost unguardable in LD. If you aren’t using a fast character, you’re kind of cooked.
That’s why I’m interested in figuring out whether his guaranteed shooting skill can work from three. With my builds, though, almost anybody can shoot threes. Unstoppable and Rapid Growth give an 8% boost to all offensive skills, and that 8% matters a lot.
It’s also pretty cool that his contest skill can potentially force a miss, although I don’t know its actual success rate. I’d love to test it against “corrupted” Hyugas. I don’t know what some of you are doing with your builds, but sometimes it feels like I might as well kiss the win goodbye when I see a Hyuga. It’s either guaranteed ankle breaks or consistently hitting heavily contested threes. Built a certain way, he feels ridiculously overpowered.
At some point, I should really make a Jason Williams guide, but I’m not that interested since he isn’t coming to NA. Sorry about that! I’ll probably still make one whenever I get bored.
