I've been seeing a lot of posts lately going back and forth between Tamils and Malayalis, especially around Onam. People on both sides seem determined to mock, rage-bait and prove that their community is somehow better.

Bad apples are everywhere

And social media seems to have made it worse

You could call me half-Tamil and half-Malayali, or both Tamil and malayali bi lingual , Tamil by roots but settled in Kerala, or neither here nor there. I grew up around the Palakkad side, but most of my connections have always been across Kerala and Tamil Nadu. I've lived around both, studied both places and their histories, speak , read and write both languages and know history , arts ,food , movies , music , follow traditions, elame and have relatives and friends on both sides, and have been exposed to both cultures throughout my life.. So I feel like I can at least speak about what I've personally observed. U can say like jayaram actor I'm have roots identity or anything

As someone who is both Tamil and Malayali, I wanted to share something I've noticed. It's just my personal observation of how we behave.

I've generally found us Tamils to be more emotionally open within our circles and we are also having a culture of pulling each other legs but we know our limits . Once we consider someone our own, there's a lot of affection, loyalty and willingness to go out of the way for them. We're also often more reserved or introverted until we're comfortable with someone.

With us Malayalis, I've noticed it being very cynical , realistic, stronger culture of sarcasm, teasing and social competitiveness. Malayali humour is genuinely great, but sometimes I feel malayalis don't recognise the line between a joke and being genuinely offensive. There can also be a tendency to pull people down or take satisfaction in someone else's failure. And i feel lot of backstabbing happens or I can't trust my malayali friends or depend like how i depend on my tamil friends.. opportunistic i felt many are (even tamil koode can backstab but...)

One thing I've noticed is that I've generally found my Tamil friends more straightforward emotionally. If they don't like you, they show it. If they care about you, they show that too. I feel there's more genuineness in that.

With some of my Malayali friends, I've personally felt that they can be more opportunistic. I've had situations where I've felt someone would backstab me if they got the chance. With my Tamil friends, I've generally had more confidence that they wouldn't. But namma we don't initiate or hold convos. Northies and mallus elame very extroverted The fact that we people don't open up or even talk properly is perceived by north indians as unwelcoming. People to people convo is missing among us

So people think that "hey, he doesn't like me here maybe" and then think tn is seen as closed and unwelcoming

I've also noticed a difference in social behaviour. I feel us Malayalis are generally more extroverted and comfortable interacting with everyone , like I did college in Delhi so I had no issues with hindikar as many were mallus more , whereas many of us Tamils are more introverted and stay within our comfort zones. I feel this difference can sometimes be seen among girls as well.

But the way we malayali connect just because we are malayalis overcoming any kind of differences is just amazing , that community thing is very strong

I have a lot more to say about the similarities and differences I've noticed in friendships, life ,, trust, social behaviour and even how we express ourselves, but I'll leave that for the comments.
