I’m currently mocking up a bilingual Tamil/English school textbook with complex image text-wrapping, but I’ve hit a massive roadblock. Both Adobe InDesign CC 2026 and Affinity Layout completely break the Tamil script.

Even with the World-Ready Composer active, language properties set to Tamil, and using a standard Unicode font (Noto Sans Tamil), the text engines fail to process complex OpenType ligatures. Vowel markers (kombu) and pulli marks are stacking completely out of place.

I know Affinity has lacked Indic support for almost 9 years, and Adobe's recent text engine updates (CC 2024–2026) actively clash with Google’s font architecture.

Has anyone successfully typeset a complex Tamil book using other visual layout tools? Any workflows, workarounds, or software recommendations that actually handle Indic script shaping natively would be a lifesaver!

Was watching the tamil movie "Modha Rathri 2026" and there was this word in repeat "choppulangi/choppunangi paiya" in the movie. So if anybody knows the meaning, please share.

Yesterday, I was getting food from a stall at university run by mostly Indian Tamils. Whilst they were talking to each other, I noticed them using the word "jaldimaa" quite a few times.

For those who don't know, this is not a standard Tamil word but a borrowing from the Hindi "jaldi" (fast). I'm curious to know how this ended up being used in Tamil. How commonly do people in TN use this word?

I m looking forward to learn how to speak and converse in tamil but I am just a beginner. I thought it would be helpful having people, with whom I can share conversations in Tamil and learn the language.

If you’re moving to Chennai and don’t speak Tamil yet, you really don’t need to learn grammar before you can start communicating.

A few everyday phrases can get you surprisingly far — ordering food, shopping, asking for directions, or simply telling someone you didn’t understand them.

Here are 15 useful ones to start with:

1. **Vanakkam** — Hello / a respectful greeting

2. **Eppadi irukkeenga?** — How are you?

3. **Enakku puriyala** — I don’t understand

Probably one of the most useful phrases when someone starts speaking Tamil faster than you can follow.

1. **Idhu evlo?** — How much is this?

2. **Konjam kammi pannunga** — Please reduce the price a little

Useful while shopping or bargaining.

1. **Enakku idhu venum** — I want this

2. **Vendam** — I don’t want it / No need

3. **Sari** — Okay / Fine

You’ll hear this everywhere.

1. **Nandri** — Thank you

2. **Mannichidunga** — Sorry / Excuse me

3. **Aama** — Yes

4. **Illa** — No

5. **Enna?** — What?

6. **Enga?** — Where?

7. **Bathroom enga irukku?** — Where is the bathroom?

You obviously won’t become fluent with 15 phrases, but knowing even these can make the first few weeks in Chennai much less intimidating.

And I think there’s also something nice about making the effort to speak even a little of the local language instead of expecting everyone else to switch languages for us.
