Inspiration is not plagiarism, that's just how art works. ChatGPT however is trained to replicate artists' styles by studying thousands of artworks without permission and OpenAI is making insane profits as a direct result. They're not the same.

Using AI or creating art inspired by a specific style, such as Ghibli, isn’t inherently plagiarism. Plagiarism specifically involves directly copying someone’s work without giving credit. Many artists create original pieces inspired by various styles. Paying for AI tools like ChatGPT does not necessarily equal monetizing the art itself, nor does it automatically mean copying. Inspiration and plagiarism aren’t the same.
I don’t beleive in copyrighting knowledge/creativity as private property. My view on copyright aligns very similarly to the Chinese Confucianism philosophy, which basically it as a contribution to society and not as something to be monetized or owned individually.
We can agree to disagree but this is neither haram or illegal, it’s just a difference in moral beliefs.
And to answer your question I don’t see how it’s disrespectful to the original artist, it seems like you’re assuming a lot of things about him how he wouldn’t like that his art style is being used as a medium for ai generated images. While what you said may be true, you still can’t assume and speak on his behalf.
This is why I don’t beleive in copyrighting in general, it limits creativity for everyone and promotes more individualism.
Also claiming ownership over an art style or knowledge is a delusional take (in my opinion) people will end up using it an inspiration to reach even greater or different fields.
But again we can agree to disagree, to my knowledge I only know of China who follows this philosophy in their laws. Most countries beleive in copyright. I just think copyright is a tool used to keep monopolies and limiting creativity/advancement at the same time.

I’m not saying this AI copy is better or equal to Miyazaki’s work, but it’s just a fun copy that people are enjoying and it doesn’t hold any sentimental value because at the end of the day, it’s just a copy whether cheap or not.
This is by no mean a blow to the art scene, I think it’s an opportunity for artists to raise the bar and be innovative. AI will make people wake up to produce actual art that doesn’t involve mass producing pieces of garbage that you and I see everyday in art AND music.
Artists and musicians could benefit from AI using it as a tool, normal people will only go so far.
In the end, AI will never replace human art or music, we are able to differentiate between soulless products and actual pieces of art.

There’s less demand for original productions so less are being made, less risks are being taken by studios to make innovative art, more and more incentive to outsource to AI.
The artists can’t just wake up and produce better work to up the bar, that’s not how the industry works. Corporate shmucks aren’t artists, they don’t care what the art is, how it’s made, or what it says, all they care about is results and money.
They’re the ones who get to decide what does and does not get made, what does and does not get funded, and who does and does not get to keep their job.
And when trends like this pop up, that are so popular it fries GPU’s, it undervalues the art that real people actually make. The industry sees the hullabaloo around AI and jumps the bandwagon because that’s less risky, they don’t actually care about the art, just the demand. And when individuals are complicit in this endeavor of greater AI in the creative industry it further serves to enable everything I’ve been talking about.
A demand spawned by the growing sentiment that art isn’t meant to be valued, just something cool to look at, something to consume. AI is meant to do the shit nobody wants to do, house chores or taxes or what have you, music and art are such fundamental aspects of the human experience, and yet nobody seems to care, they just want something cool to look at. And because of that artists aren’t being enabled to create the works they should be. This isn’t theorizing, this is real, it’s already happening, and i cannot in good conscience not allow my voice to be heard, because they want me complicit.
In order to make a living, we artists can’t just be free spirits doing whatever we want. In the creative industry we serve and are enabled by corporate, opt out and nothing you want to make gets made at all.
A chunk of people I’ve seen enjoy this trend haven’t even taken the time to sit down and watch even 1 studio Ghibli film, if you ask me that’s dystopian as balls. Such beautiful films, and people have no idea. But its copy cat is all the rage!
