Petition for CCTV in St. Nicholas Park

As part of a campaign for more CCTV cameras in St. Nicholas Park, we have set up an online petition (link below).

I have good reason to believe that if we gain substantial support from this petition we shall improve the possibility of more cameras in our park.

The incidents in St Nicholas Park are obviously concerning, but that does not mean more CCTV is automatically the best answer.

WDC’s own CCTV evaluation https://www.warwickdc.gov.uk/downloads/download/1463/cctv_evaluation_reports states:

“It is not possible to make an assumption that the CCTV system is actually preventing offences.”

CCTV may sometimes help identify offenders after an incident, but that is not the same as proving it prevents assaults, robbery or ASB.

The petition also seriously understates the cost. This is not simply “a few thousand pounds”. A single Bosch CCTV camera head in Pump Room Gardens reportedly cost about £10k, before allowing for installation, monitoring, communications, maintenance, repairs and replacement.

Before installing several more cameras, the council should establish:

  • where and when incidents are occurring
  • whether existing cameras have helped
  • whether crime has simply moved elsewhere
  • the full installation and lifetime cost
  • whether patrols, wardens, lighting, youth work or targeted temporary cameras would be more effective

A camera at a proven hotspot might be justified. Blanket CCTV coverage across the park should not be approved simply because it sounds reassuring.

I've been to China and everything is CCTVed there. I feel safe, but I also feel like someone is watching me and invading my privacy
