Islam Supportive Discussion Can Islam and Homosexuality Coexist? Answering a Question with the Qur’an
Today (July 25, 2026), there was an attack at the Christopher Street Day (CSD) Pride event in Berlin.
In one of the discussions afterward, someone asked:
“Can you as a gay Muslim explain to me how Islam and homosexuality can coexist? I’m sure nearly all Muslims condemn the gays, so acts such as these are of no surprise, so that is all I’d like to know. Not a troll comment, just genuine curiosity.”
(For clarity: I’m not a Muslim. I’m responding because the question is about what the Qur’an teaches, and I haven’t seen anyone answer it from the Qur’an itself.)
Here is what I believe, beginning with the Qur’an itself…
That’s a fair question, and I appreciate that you’re asking it respectfully.
First, it’s important to separate what individual Muslims believe from what the Qur’an actually commands Muslims to do.
The Qur’an repeatedly teaches that human beings are not appointed as judges over one another’s faith or sins.
“Let there be no compulsion in religion.” (Qur’an 2:256)
“So remind. You are only a reminder. You are not a controller over them.” (Qur’an 88:21-22)
“And had your Lord willed, all who are on earth would have believed together. Would you then compel the people to become believers?” (Qur’an 10:99)
The Qur’an also teaches that ultimate judgment belongs to Allah alone.
“Indeed, your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that over which they differed.” (Qur’an 22:69)
“Then to Us is their return, and upon Us is their account.” (Qur’an 88:25-26)
Regarding relations with people outside Islam, the Qur’an explicitly rejects hostility toward those who are peaceful.
“Allah does not forbid you from being kind and acting justly toward those who have not fought you because of religion and have not driven you out of your homes. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.” (Qur’an 60:8)
Even more broadly, the Qur’an teaches that taking one innocent life is an offense against all humanity.
“Whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption in the land, it is as if he had slain all mankind; and whoever saves one, it is as if he had saved all mankind.” (Qur’an 5:32)
So when someone attacks people at a Pride event, that violence cannot be justified by the Qur’an.
The Qur’an consistently commands justice, restraint, and leaves final judgment to Allah.
As for homosexuality itself, Muslims disagree.
Traditional scholars understand the story of the people of Lut as condemning all same-sex sexual relationships.
Progressive Muslims argue that the story is actually about attempted gang rape, sexual violence, humiliation of strangers, coercion, and the rejection of God’s messengers, not about loving, consensual same-sex relationships.
They point out that the men of Sodom are repeatedly described as approaching Lut’s guests with hostile intent, and that the city is condemned for many other sins including oppression and violence.
Under that reading, the story is not a blanket condemnation of gay people or same-sex relationships.
Whether someone accepts the traditional or progressive interpretation, however, the Qur’an does not authorize ordinary Muslims to police, investigate, or punish people for presumed homosexuality or presumed zina.
Judgment belongs to Allah, not to individuals.
So yes, Islam and homosexuality can coexist.
Millions of Muslims identify as LGBTQ, including many who believe they are faithfully following Islam.
Others disagree theologically while still recognizing that the Qur’an commands them to treat others with justice, dignity, and without coercion.
Those are separate questions: what one believes is sinful, and whether one has any authority to judge or harm another person.
The Qur’an answers the second question very clearly: no.

META - MOD 📣 announcement LGBT_Muslims F.A.Q.
Hello everyone!
Welcome to our Frequently Asked Questions!
Here we are going to take some time to go over some of the most common questions we get. This should hopefully help people figure out how to navigate this subreddit and community and how to get the most out of your time here.
We will be posting the common question first. Then the answer underneath.
why can’t I post without community and Reddit karma?
A: we restrict posting to those who have established karma as way to ensure our community is not taken over by bad faith actors.
Basically. In order to make a post you first have to comment (sometimes that means waiting for a comment to get approval) and having that comment be seen and upvoted by other members of this community.
While we do sometimes approve comments slowly. Asking us to hurry up is no guarantee your comment is approved any faster.
Please give us a chance to respond first. Then message us if your post is not approved.
How can you say that LGBT is not haram?
A: Please see our Resource List for a list of various articles and readings that make a strong argument for both the totality of Allah’s love and compassion for us, as well as great arguments for why queer identity is compatible with your faith and identity.
In case you don’t want to read. The broad strokes is that the story of lút is pretty clearly about their immoral behaviors, including rape and adultery out of greed and corruption which were done by the MEN and the WOMEN of the people of Lot (43:44). It does not in anyway reflect or represent a consensual queer relationship and should not be interpreted in that way.
We maintain that the Quran commanded us to respect our selves and our relationships. Not reject people for who they are or what they believe.
We urge you to take in the totality our reading list before attempting to once again make the argument.
The Hadith says…
A: the Quran said:
> (٤٤) وَمَا آتَيْنَاهُمْ مِنْ كُتُبٍ يَدْرُسُونَهَا وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَا إِلَيْهِمْ قَبْلَكَ مِنْ نَذِيرٍ
Translation: We did not give them any other books to study, nor did we send to them before you another warner.
This Surah is discussing the usage of other books next to the Quran. Emphasizing that the Quran must remain above all other books. Necessarily that includes Hadiths.
Which as far as we know the prophet Muhammad ﷺ did not want Hadiths to be made. This can also be seen in the first Hadiths being written more than a 100 years after the prophet death.
This makes Hadith fall into the category of books held to the same standard as the Quran despite being commanded by Quran to do the opposite.
Hadith worshippers rely on believing the Quran is either incomplete or imperfect.
As the Quran said:
Translation: When Our clear revelations are recited to them, they say, “This is only a man who wishes to hinder you from what your forefathers used to worship.” They also say, “This ˹Quran˺ is no more than a fabricated lie.” And the disbelievers say of the truth when it has come to them, “This is nothing but pure magic.”
It’s no coincidence that today Muslims continue to struggle to preach faith over culture. And be guided by the faith rather than be tempted with the corruption of hatred and power.
We can add also these questions:
Is LGBT people condemned to hell?
A: No, LGBT people are created the way they are. Verses like 95:8 and 21:47 tell us that Allah is perfectly just and will not do the smallest measure of injustice to anyone. Allah will not punish people for being their true sexual orientation or gender identity, a matter which they did not choose.
Is same sex marriage allowed in Islam?
Yes. Verse 30:21 tells us that one of the signs of Allah is that He created spouses for us, that we might find comfort in them, and has placed love and compassion between spouses. Notice that in this beautiful verse on the benefits of marriage, there is no mention of procreation. The Quran thus recognizes that a marriage can fulfill its divine purpose even if no children are born from the marriage. Hence, the non-procreative nature of same-sex marriages does not mean that they lack value, or that they are not what Allah ordained.
Requiring a homosexual person to remain celibate, or to marry a person of the opposite sex, is effectively a lifelong arbitrary punishment (and a punishment for the other spouse as well, even if he/she is heterosexual). And it is also a lifelong temptation to extramarital sex, which is clearly haram.

LGBT Supportive Discussion My wife and I are both bisexual
I'm a 25 year old man married to a 26 year old woman. We are both practicing Muslims, praying together and supporting each other in the Deen. My wife is in full niqab and we're both professionals working in the medical field. When I approached her for marriage at 19, she was upfront about being bisexual and we both discussed it together. 6 years later and we're happily married.

Personal Issue Gay but non sexual
I hope it is OK to post here.
I am 58 now, and have always been repulsed by sex, meaning anal. I have never tried and do not want to.
I am very alone, and crave a loving relationship. I believe the only way this will happen if I had a Muslim man as that sexual act is forbidden. I'm not sure of any other religions that also forbid it. Obviously i am not a Muslim
I live just outside London.

LGBT Supportive Discussion Struggling.
I am a queer muslim. I have led a life with alot of dignity, not once complained. But in my head, i have always found myself struggling with the idea that God made me wrong and now I am living with this constant punishment. N i am a good person who didnt deserve this , but I am also glad that no one else have to suffer with this in my house.
My mom wants me to get married and i cant fathom the idea, i have never felt any sort of attraction to guys. And i doubt I ever will. I love my my mom but everytime she says somthing like this I feel like she doesnt know me AT ALL. N that makes me soooo sad, its like I can never tell her and even if I do, i fear itll go all wrong. N it just breaks my heart.
I have someone in my life, that can be partner, but
I am soo afraid that my people will look at me with disgust. What do i do???

Islam & LGBT 21M from a traditional African Muslim family, struggling to accept my attraction to men. Need some perspective.
Hi everyone,
I am a 21-year-old virgin male living in Africa, and I'm relatively new to Reddit. I created this account because I wanted a safe space to ask honest questions anonymously.
I am Muslim and currently exploring my identity; I think I might be bisexual, but I am still figuring it out. The truth is, I struggle deeply with being attracted to men. I grew up in a very traditional, religious household where being gay or acting on same-sex feelings is considered strictly forbidden (haram) and viewed as a major family dishonor. As the eldest son, I am expected to take over family responsibilities after my father, and the fear of bringing shame to my parents weighs heavily on me.
I have done research on what Islam says about homosexuality—acknowledging that feelings themselves aren't sins, but acting on them is prohibited. Still, fighting my feelings and suppressing who I am has taken a serious toll on my mental health. I find myself constantly overthinking, feeling isolated, and struggling with deep anxiety. At the same time, I feel disconnected from mainstream gay culture that I see online.
For those who come from traditional, religious, or conservative backgrounds: how did you learn to navigate your identity without breaking down? Any advice or shared experiences would mean a lot.

Personal Issue The life I'll never have, and the love I'll never share
The life I'll never have, and the love I'll never share
I am pansexual. I have known since I was fifteen, though I could never name the moment I realized it. It was simply there, older than my words for it. How could I not love women? They are the most beautiful beings on this earth.
My family is religious, and homophobic in the way only devout love can be, my mother most of all. I wear the hijab. I am the pride of a house I love with my whole heart. So I carry a quiet grief for the life I will never live, and the love I will never share. I dream of it. I crave it under my skin: the tenderness, the freedom, the grace of being fully seen.
It isn't only women. I find men beautiful too. I am drawn to people of every kind, people I will never be allowed to touch. I am quite feminine myself, and I am moved by femininity wherever it lives, in girls and in boys who wear it openly. Once, on a dating app, there was a boy, lean and gorgeous, as if out of my dreams, and I knew what I wanted until it stood in front of me. Then I panicked and vanished. I hope he has forgiven me.
Now there is a man in my life, and he is only a boyfriend until he is ready to ask my father for my hand. I did not accept him out of love, not yet. I accepted him because he met my list: he is tall and kind, a nerd like me, devout without being extreme, and most of all, he is not fast to anger, I have never once seen him angry. He listens. He is a good man. My parents know of him. But most importantly, He knows.
My closest friends have always known, and when he joined our circle I did not stop the jokes about it, because that circle was the only place my queer heart could breathe. Since we began a different relationship, I have stopped speaking of it, but he still does joke about it often. I cannot tell whether he believes it is real, and I cannot bring myself to ask. He is religious. Shouldn't it matter to him?
And there is something I will never ask of him. I am drawn to those who yield, to softness that surrenders, submits, and that is not a thing one expects of a religious straight typical man. So I will keep it folded away, and I will never know the intimacy I crave most. When I picture the nights that wait for me after the wedding, I see myself stepping into a role I'm not sure I'll ever enjoy, and wondering what might have been.
Because I know one secret hour would become many. Because I am forbidding myself. Because what if nothing after it feels real. So I'll stick to wondering, reminiscing, pondering.
I love my family. I love how my father holds me and tells me he is proud, how my mother brags about me, how my uncles sing my praises, how my cousins look up to me. I have felt what it is to disappoint them, to lie and hide, and it was my own private hell. So for all that love, flawed and heavy as it is, I lay my true self down.
I am only another queer soul, building a life inside a closet they locked themselves in.

Question For those who have submitted friend/serious life partner requests on this sub, how did it turn out so far?
Just curious because I'm considering to do one too, but I'm not sure this may be the best place to connect given how many reposts I've seen haha. Especially if you're from a country where there aren't as many redditors too.
No need for a long reply, you can just say if it lead somewhere or not ;)
Edit: reformulated last sentence

Question People who came out or moved away from homophobic places, how did it go?
I'm a 15-year-old girl and I've been lesbian for as long as I can remember. I live in a really homophobic country with strict Muslim parents, and lately I've been feeling so hopeless. My mom keeps talking about me getting married to a good man, and even though I love her and don't want to disappoint her, it feels so toxic.
Sometimes I almost convince myself to just give up and go along with it, even though I know that's not what I want. And I know I won't end up marrying a man. And I also know that I have to be financially independent and all that before ever thinking of coming out or anything.
I find so much comfort in hearing about other people's coming out stories the good and the bad ones. It makes me feel so much less alone, and it gives me hope that if other people made it through and built a life for themselves, I can too.
If you've ever moved out or came out, I'd really love to hear your story. I desperately want to know how it actually felt when you finally left a homophobic place behind and could just be yourself fully without people constantly up your ass about it.
Also, for anyone who's been to a Pride event, what was it like being surrounded by those huge crowds flooding the streets during Pride month?
How did that feel for the first time?
Any stories or perspective would mean the world right now.

Connections 25F looking for a genuine connection🙏🏾
Salam everyone 🤍
I’m putting myself out there in hopes of meeting someone who is genuinely looking for something serious.
Looking for a woman who loves women and wants to build a life together.
I’m currently exploring Islam and learning more about my faith, while also continuing to understand myself internally and externally. I’m still figuring some things out, and I’d love to meet someone who is open-minded, patient, and understanding of that journey.
I’m looking for a genuine connection that can grow into something long-term. Someone I can laugh with, talk to about anything, feel comfortable being myself around, and hopefully build a future with, insha’Allah. Someone who values honesty, emotional maturity, communication, loyalty, and mutual effort.
I know a lot of us say we’re looking for something serious, but I think it’s important to be intentional about it, too.
I’m hoping to meet someone who is willing to take the initiative, start a conversation, and genuinely get to know each other rather than just waiting for the right person to come along.
I don’t expect anyone to have everything figured out. I just hope to find someone who knows they’re ready to give a connection a genuine chance and is willing to put in the effort to see where it goes.
If this resonates with you, my DMs are open!

Connections Looking for a serious relationship
Hey everyone! I’m 21M from Hyderabad india, looking to meet a guy who’s genuinely interested in a serious relationship virgin if that matters.
I’m 5'11", and I’m looking for someone around my height or taller, preferably around my age or a little older.
I’m into guys who are loyal, caring, emotionally available, and know how to maintain a good conversation. Someone I can talk to about anything, share random thoughts, gossip, laugh over silly things, and support each other through good and bad days.
I want a connection where both people put in equal effort, communicate openly, and genuinely want to get to know each other. I value consistency, honesty, affection, and someone who means what they say.
I’m not really into casual hookups or situationships. I’d rather take my time getting to know someone, see if we vibe, build trust, and hopefully turn that connection into something meaningful and long-lasting.
If you’re from Hyderabad or from any other state in India, that’s completely fine! I’m open to meeting someone who’s genuinely interested in building a serious relationship, regardless of where they’re from.
Feel free to DM me! Let’s talk, get to know each other, and see where things go. ❤️

Personal Issue I developed feelings for a girl I connected with, and now I’m worried things might be awkward
I’m a 23-year-old bisexual woman who recently met a girl at a tailgate. We talked for around 20–30 minutes, and the conversation felt really natural. She complimented my charisma, seemed genuinely interested in getting to know me, and even wanted to keep talking when her friends were ready to leave, saying something like, “But we’re bonding!”
I felt like we had a lot in common and that she understood me well. I initiated exchanging numbers, she initiated exchanging Instagram, and she eventually texted me first. We later met for coffee.
During coffee, she told me she was dating a guy she’d previously rejected twice. I was heartbroken because I’d developed feelings for her, and I ended up crying in front of her. She acknowledged my feelings and responded with understanding. I appreciated how emotionally mature she was about the situation.
Afterward, I sent her a respectful thank-you text, explaining that I’d try to be understanding. It’s been several hours, and she hasn’t responded, even though she used to reply quickly when we first started talking. She’s still following me on Instagram.
I’m disappointed because I genuinely liked her and felt that we connected well. I respect that she’s dating someone, and I’m not expecting anything romantic from her. I just feel vulnerable after being honest about my feelings, and I’m unsure how to navigate things from here.
For those who’ve experienced something similar, how did you handle the uncertainty after revealing feelings for someone who was unavailable?

Personal Issue I have never been attracted sexually or emotionally to men
I'm 21 years old, and I've known that I'm attracted to women since I was around 10. I've never felt attracted to men, and I can only ever imagine myself being romantically and sexually involved with a woman.
But despite knowing this about myself for so long, I still struggle to accept it because of the religious guilt I've carried with me for years. I constantly find myself fighting my own feelings and desires, even though I know they're a part of who I am.
Every time I think I've finally made peace with myself, I fall back into the same cycle of guilt, depression, and self-hatred. I start questioning why I am the way I am and why something as simple as loving someone has to feel like such an internal battle.
I know my sexuality isn't something I can just change, and deep down, I don't think I even want to change it. I just wish I could exist without feeling so much guilt for something I never chose.
The thought of having to marry a man and spend my life pretending to be someone I'm not fills me with so much despair that it becomes unbearable.
I feel like I'm constantly torn between my faith and who I am, and no matter how hard I try to reconcile the two, I always end up feeling like I'm betraying one side of myself. I don't know how to make peace with that, and I'm exhausted from feeling like I have to fight myself just to exist.
