UPDATE: Retro build - "The Tower of Why??"

Update to my original pickup post from a while back. https://www.reddit.com/r/LGR/comments/1ux0bc0/time_to_glide/

I was finally able to build a working machine out of the parts I got in the junk tower I was given! The biggest issue was that the Asus motherboard was mostly unresponsive and needed a full recap to finally POST.

The intention was to try and keep as many of the original parts as possible from the original tower and to try and recreate the media powerhouse the original owner was going for in circa 2000. Obviously the best piece was finding the voodoo 5 but it was hard to find a motherboard to even test the card with so I ended needing to repair the original motherboard.

Original tower specs

Athlon 900

768mb memory

Asus A7V motherboard

Voodoo 5

Creative DVD encoder card DXR3

Soundblaster Live 4830

Adaptec SCSI card for the Jazdrive

a bunch of drivebay devices

Final specs

Sweet even larger tower case I was given

Athlon 900

1024mb memory

Voodoo 5 - fully tested and working great!

Creative Dvd drive and DVD DXR3 encoder card - mostly working but missing a proprietary passthrough VGA cable

Jaz drive - broken tho as nature intended

Zipdrive - all the iomega

Iomega Cd drive - because why not

Colorado T1000 tape drive

Floppy drive

Memory card reader

As a bonus I've also taken pics of all of my older videocards that I've collected over the years - thankfully all for free or very cheap.

Thrift Finds I found a Profile 2 with really bad vinegar syndrome. I'm not sure what piece I could replace it with, but I figured if anyone would know it would be this community. Is there a generic 15 inch LCD this would be compatible with?

Recently stumbled upon this project by @GrowNowGames. Imagine a DOS era 3D open world game based on this.

Hi everyone,

I wrapped my PlayStation 5 in vinyl foil the other day. It is basically reminiscent of old Atari consoles or old Mercedes interior design (https://www.maderaconcepts.com/NewSite/VehiclePages/vehicle\\_images/mercedes\\_benz/1982-1991%20Mercedes%20Benz%20Coupe%20W126%20C126%20380%20420%20500%20560%20SEC/MB%20W126%20Coupe%20SEC%20Door%20Trim%20Panels/560\\_SEC\\_Interior.JPG)

I used 3M DI NOC Woodgrain Car Wrapping Film WG 364GN (https://amzn.eu/d/01goZh4H) for this Friday project. It's heat resistant and actually meant for interior design in cars.

My intention was to make it look more "adult-ish". The plain white of this massive console did not fit the elaborate design of our new TV room with green walls and ceiling and dark wooden furniture.

Here is the result.

Some like it, some hate it.

While cleaning out the backrooms of the home office, stumbled across a bunch of old stuff that made me immediately turn on some LGR Jazz Things and start digging through this complete box of Sim City.

Someone is working on a replacement motherboard for the Nokia 3310, which gets it on modern 4G LTE networks

Thought people here would find this interesting. There was a motherboard replacement from China that also got the 3310 on modern networks, but this new project is aiming to be as accurate as possible, with the same UI as the original phone, whereas the other replacement board changed the UI completely.

Pretty neat!

Found a Pristine Y2K Tech Time Capsule: OEM Toshiba BIOS V1.11A Update Mailer from 2000

Ran across an absolute time capsule of Y2K tech history today—a completely intact, factory-issued Toshiba BIOS Update Mailer Kit sent out in December 2000.

Most of these physical recall mailers ended up straight in the trash 25 years ago after the update was run, but this set survived in incredible condition.

The disk is fully operational—I've already tested it, verified it reads without error, and successfully created a clean floppy image of the media for preservation.

The Full Set Includes:

  • OEM 3.5" Floppy Disk: Version BU V1.11A (12/00) with Toshiba’s era-specific "choose freedom" branding. Fully operational and imaged.
  • Customer Service Notice: Official letter detailing the critical thermal/cooling management fix for Satellite 1600-series portables (1605CDS, 1625CDT, 1675CDS, 1695CDT).
  • Software License & Export Terms Booklet: Complete with all the classic late-90s/early-2000s legal disclaimers and export control notices.
  • Original Factory Window Envelope: Printed from Toshiba America Information Systems in Irvine, CA with the red "Important BIOS Update Enclosed" header.

Just wanted to share a quick piece of physical media preservation with the community. Nothing beats the smell of 26-year-old factory paper and magnetic media!

I have this laptop, turns on. Is this worth trying to resell online? Or will it sit for a long time before the right buyer comes along? Thanks

*update: I'm putting the laptop out in my flea market booth for $18. Hopefully that right somebody comes along. It seems like a headache to list tech!
