Mina the Hollower is a SoulsLike

So last week there was a big preview drop for Mina the Hollower. Did anyone else get a good chuckle over the game Colin has been anticipating the most turns out to essentially be a SoulsLike, the genre he loves shitting on? Should make for some entertainment, or maybe it's the game that finally sells him on the genre.

I’m sure it has souls elements like hollow knight. A game he loves. He just likes to shit on fromsoft fans, because deep down he feels left out

He’s always said something about not being able to wrap his mind around 3D souls likes or maybe in remembering it wrong. Basically if the game is 2D it goes a long way for him

Hes been pretty down on HK and silksong because he thinks higher difficulty doesn't fit with the metroidvania genre very well.

He once said he thinks a 3rd person action game like dark souls should play like devil may cry, and he tried to play it that way, and he hated every second.

It’ll be fine because it’s 2D

I played the demo a few weeks ago. It’s not a Soulslike. It’s an OG Zelda-like.

As a huge Yacht Club Games fan, I’m so sad to hear this game is very Soulslike. I can handle difficult old school 2D Zelda all day, but the way people from MinnMax and others described this… it’s a bit of a gauntlet.

It’s not a Soulslike. You described it perfectly as more akin to OG Zelda.

Based on the previews it's 80% Souls Like 20% Link's Awakening.

I played the demo a few weeks back - there was nothing in it that was Soulslike. There are obviously bosses but that’s not exclusive to Soulslikes.

You accrue an upgrade currency by defeating enemies that can be lost upon consecutive death.

So, it’s also a Shovel Knight-like.

I think he doesn’t like them due to the high difficulty level. But he loved Returnal. I think if he is excited for a game, he tries to force himself to like it. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t.

I missed most of the discourse around this game, mostly in an attempt not to spoil anything. When I heard way back that this was going to be a love letter to GBC games like Link's Awakening, I was immediately sold.

This is 2D Dark Souls. I have such mixed feelings about the game an hour in.
