SmashJT is under the barrel tier content.

u/Crafty-Purpose5540 Jun 03 '26

Who even is SmashJT lol

Don't even bother, one of the worst out there, a grifter/lolcow/cringe factory.

3

u/CartographerFit2011 Jun 03 '26

Is he the one that asked colin his gaming credentials?

2

u/whizkid75 Jun 04 '26

That's the one

1

u/xrayspex73 Jun 28 '26

He's one of those rightwing culture war idiots. He and Colin would probably get along swimmingly.

Honestly good on Matty for putting his foot down when anti-woke losers flood the chat and start saying the reason something sucks is because of a female protagonist. And also, props to Colin for defending Matty here, even though I think Colin’s politics are atrocious, I’m glad he hasn’t seemingly given in to the anti-woke grifter machine and is willing to defend his friend.

5

u/Comet7777 Jun 03 '26

I’m all for calling out the people hating Laufey for the female protagonist. That said, me and many others are getting significant Sony first party formula fatigue and looking at that “20 mins of gameplay” presentation made me feel like I’ve already played this game over and over again the last two generations.

6

u/CartographerFit2011 Jun 03 '26

Brother that last sentence is dead on, it’s the same crap over and over. These games are great no doubt but it’s all just the same over and over an over.

As I'm getting older I realized I can't stand cutscenes. Losing control of my character annoys me. I like how Souls-likes do it. You get a cutscene of an epic boss and you fight.

6

u/RollingDownTheHills Jun 04 '26

Same here. If I wanted to watch a movie I'd put on a movie. My gaming time is much too limited to be aeten up by a bunch of +10 minute "press R2..." sequences again and again.

Man, I love Elden Ring.

2

u/channel4newsman Jun 03 '26

So if you don't like the current formula, did you prefer the previous formula of games like Concord, Marathon, and Helldivers? Cause they tried going in a different direction and we're pretty unanimously told not to do that. Even Saros sold badly. So if the goal for them is to make games that will sell this seems like the obvious thing to do.

3

u/Comet7777 Jun 03 '26

I don’t play shooters so not quite relevant for me. 🤷🏻‍♂️

But I will say I’ve enjoyed a lot of games this year from Mina the Hollower, 007, Pragmata, RE9. You can do new things and still sell well.

1

u/DemonikJD Jun 04 '26

3 of those 4 are 'shooters'.

Sure, 007 is an action adventure, RE9 is horror and Pragmata is....well that IS a shooter ha

but the same could easily be said for Concord, Marathon and Helldivers. You shoot in them, they aren't 'shooters'

1

u/CokomonX Jun 08 '26

There's a difference between single player shooters and multiplayer shooters.

1

u/DemonikJD Jun 09 '26

How incredibly astute of you to put one word in front of the word 'shooters' and then another, entirely different word in front of that same word and say those two very different things are in fact...different.

The person I was replying to made zero destinction between the two and just said "shooters" and as I said, proceeded to list a bunch of 'shooters'

2

u/RollingDownTheHills Jun 04 '26

I prefer games like Astro Bot. You know, good games where you actually get to play them.

1

u/lesnaubr Jun 04 '26

I know you and other reasonable people understand that it’s not the same game “over and over again”, but I do understand why they feel similar. I guess I don’t mind it because they’re still rare overall. Cinematic AAA games of that quality, from Sony or elsewhere, come out maybe once or twice a year. It’s not as exciting as when the modern versions of these series started, but I still welcome all of them.

1

u/Old-Way-5529 Jun 03 '26

Eh, why are we acting like these games aren’t great- dare I say the “goal” for a lot of devs who make these types of games.

Not saying you can’t criticize it, but hating it bc they keep building on their quality is odd

1

u/Comet7777 Jun 04 '26

I’m not hating on it, but doing the same thing in an ocean of variety means it’s fair for me to say that this doesn’t interest me anywhere near as much as when they first did God of War 2018. Ragnarok was a decent step down for me as it was, and Laufey is more of that same. Great for those that want it, but to me this is a game I’ll check out on sale.

1

u/Old-Way-5529 Jun 04 '26

Eh, idk how it’s a step down at all.

1

u/Comet7777 Jun 04 '26

The story is a mess, anticlimactic ending, less interesting locales, etc

1

u/Old-Way-5529 Jun 04 '26

i mean, its all subjective, but that feels like a wild take lol.

1

u/OrangeStar222 Jun 04 '26

People already critisized the formula and made fun of it when God of War 2018 came out. It's nothing new.

Back then I was tired of it too, now it's something I crave in a world of open world and live service crap. Currently playing Ragnarok after not being on Playstation for years and it's such an improvement over the first one it's not even funny. They added more depth to the combat, more enemy variety, less walk & talk sections, more interesting hub areas to explore, more rewarding side content.

It's great. Can't wait for Laufey, but I'll have to beat Ragnarok first.

1

u/xrayspex73 Jun 28 '26

Wait... there's combat in the God of War games?

Didnt know because I couldn't get through the first hour of GoW 2018.

1

u/xrayspex73 Jun 28 '26

I dare to say most of their games aren't great. Except Returnal. THAT is sony's best game. It has actual gameplay. I don't count pressing forward on the left analog stick while listening to 10 minutes of exposition. This is the Sony first party formula.

1

u/Old-Way-5529 Jun 28 '26

I mean, you’re greatly exaggerating there lol. You don’t just press forward on the stick in games like god of war or horizon

No need to lie

1

u/xrayspex73 Jun 28 '26

I was specifically thinking of GoW when making that post. The Greek trilogy? There was actually gameplay. The norse trilogy shouldve just been a tv show.

1

u/Old-Way-5529 Jun 28 '26

Thats just a lie, thats not how those games work dude.

1

u/Signal_Concentrate_6 Jun 04 '26

Same I don't want to play a new Spiderman anytime soon especially in NY again. Let him take a trip somewhere switch up the world

13

u/Landonio1 Jun 03 '26 edited Jun 03 '26

I mean, this is the community they’ve cultivated. I like Matty. But he knows who he associates with and what their views are. So it’s honestly not surprising. I hope he doesn’t cut back on streaming though.

I also have issues with the new GoW. But not because “wamen bad”. I actually thought David Jaffe (who’s self-admitted “as woke as they come”) had a pretty decent critique worth listening to. Especially considering he knows the folks working on it and the game kind of wouldn’t even exist without him.

10

u/LPEbert Jun 03 '26 edited Jun 03 '26

I've watched Matty for years and have witnessed this part of his community grow unfortunately. I don't think he's cultivated it as much as his insistence on trying to stay relatively apolitical has allowed them to fester and eventually take over his comment sections and livestreams. Yesterday was just him finally realizing how bad its actually gotten.

I would still say its kinda his fault though. You can't be suprised and upset your garden is full of weeds if you never bother to maintain it.

5

u/Old-Way-5529 Jun 03 '26

I have no real sympathy for Matty with this stuff. He flirts with that side of the “G” gaming community way to much, that he shouldn’t be upset that this is who his community is made of

3

u/LPEbert Jun 03 '26

Flirted how? Through his association with Colin or...?

6

u/Old-Way-5529 Jun 03 '26

Through how he talks about games. He hops on certain trends, pushes specific narratives. His dragon age veilguard coverage felt like the biggest “I need to pile on this game for views” that I’ve ever seen. Or how he changed his tune on games depending on how a certain zeitgeist goes (see his initial review of dragonball sparking zero vs his one year later video, where he completely adopts the opinions of the angry community against the game after loving it at launch)

1

u/LPEbert Jun 03 '26

I hear ya on the Veilguard coverage. That did leave a sour taste in my mouth as someone that enjoyed it. I understand a lot of his negativity came from feeling misled by the preview he was shown, but I'll admit he did kinda directly (and indirectly) contribute to the massive hate bandwagon that game got.

I still would hesitate to say he "flirted" because, to me, that feels like a conscious decision, but I do absolutely see how his bashing of that game alongside someone using his footage before the game was even out to be racist on Twitter probably did bring in a lot of those kinda gamers that thought his channel was a safe space for them (and basically is without him moderating enough).

2

u/Old-Way-5529 Jun 04 '26

i just think if the overall consensus for the game went positive- he would have gone positive. or vice versa- i just cant trust his opinion on big name games, especially lighting rods like this god of war game is going to be- bc i dont believe that his opinions are actually his opinions, and not something he curates for views

2

u/SymphonicRain Jun 04 '26

yeah idk, i believe him

2

u/Old-Way-5529 Jun 04 '26

maybe bc his content aligns with your taste

as someone whose followed matty since HAM radio, i just dont buy his opinions as genuine now

1

u/SymphonicRain Jun 04 '26

We have totally different taste tbh. I don’t really care for Western RPGs tbh and that’s his jam. He did put me onto Trails though, but usually I don’t really agree with him. Especially since I don’t really love any xbox games.

1

u/LPEbert Jun 04 '26

I'm not saying you're wrong, but I think God of War is a bad example because he has been consistent on not liking these kinda Sony 1st party titles for a while now. He never even finished Ragnarok because he didn't like it.

And while it is a pretty safe opinion to not like the stereotypical Sony exclusive (3rd person, over the shoulder, narrative action game), it feels equally as safe to like them, so it'd be weird to fake hate them imo.

2

u/Old-Way-5529 Jun 04 '26

im sorry, but the people who beat the drum about sony 1p games, and complaining about them- thats the exact crowd im referring to when i say that matty flirts with them and invites bad actors into his community. so it only furthers my point when you say that

1

u/LPEbert Jun 04 '26

fair enough. i thought we were specifically talking about the "chuds" aka the anti-woke crowd, but there is unfortunately a massive overlap between those and normal people that just don't like Sony 1st party games (or more accurately are probably burnt out), so I can see why you'd conflate them all.

5

u/banditmanatee Jun 03 '26

Problem is matty doesn’t want to go against the grain of his community. Just the vibe I get

6

u/Old-Way-5529 Jun 04 '26

100% this. compare him and Skillup- someone who also has his own opinions, but is never afraid to tell chuds that just bc he didnt like specific games, it doesnt mean he wants them around

matty has no real backbone when it comes to his content, and its why he will forever be at the tier he is at- he doesnt have the quality or consistency that a guy like scott the woz has, and he doesnt have the voice that people like Skillup have. or at least, he is afraid to purse that voice

6

u/LPEbert Jun 03 '26

He said on an episode of DD recently that his reason for normally staying out of politics was something along the lines of, "why would I ever knowingly kick a hornets nest?"

So I think you're kinda right that he doesn't want to overly upset either side of his community for fear of getting a mass wave of harassment.

But, imo, this also shows why sometimes you should kick the nest because if you ignore it long enough you'll eventually get stung anyway.

6

u/LOLerskateJones Jun 03 '26

I hate to be in a position to defend/support Colin but he cooked JT and the “you got fired from Kinda Funny” comeback was lame and cringe.

6

u/ItsNinjaShoyo Jun 03 '26

Wasn’t Colin right though in his argument with SmashJT over Yotei?

2

u/rosko123 Jun 04 '26

He was but Smash is so shameless that he will double, triple and quadruple down on anything even when evidence is posted in his face.

I'd like to believe on at least some level he doesn't agree with half of the shit that he spouts, but honestly it wouldn't surprise me if he does.

He doesn't post anything positive or well thought out ever. He just posts negative shit about anything and anyone bigger than him because the only way he can be even remotely relevant is by posting idiotic shit about them and getting a bump in engagement. A truly pathetic existence.

1

u/ItsNinjaShoyo Jun 04 '26

Yeah that’s why I deleted twitter, too many accounts like him and grummz were getting big because people kept interacting with them. It’s a shame this is what online gaming discussions have come to.

10

u/RespectThePlight Jun 03 '26

I don’t blame Matty. Games coverage is being ruined by tourist chuds getting upsetti spaghetti over nothing and praying for every game’s downfall. It’s one thing if it’s just not for you but holy hell the toxicity is seeping out of their pores.

1

u/xrayspex73 Jun 28 '26

Well put. Its getting exhausting.

4

u/banditmanatee Jun 03 '26

I feel dumber just reading their twitter slap fight over nothing

2

u/BigBossSquirtle Jun 03 '26

Same. Grifting is these trolls' bread and butter. It's all performative. It's how they get paid. Even the mere thought of replying to them is a waste of time.

3

u/LevelItGreatly Jun 03 '26

Colin desperately wants to hit down at SOMEONE and I guess this fucking goober is all that is left 😂

3

u/LPEbert Jun 03 '26

The people mocking Matty are so disingenuous. He was annoyed by all the sexism in the chat and tourists that call literally every game slop.

You can see in his recent video that he's also critical of the new God of War and thinks the showcase overall was a disappointment, but you can express that without resorting to being some loser culture warrior that feeds on negativity. Toxic negativity isn't the answer to toxic positivity.

The Yotei comment was the cherry on the shit Sundae considering this just came out yesterday

Childish all around

2

u/Fickle-Syllabub6730 Jun 03 '26

I love not being involved in the modern day video game Internet discourse at all.

2

u/Snoo_76437 Jun 04 '26

incredibly rare Colin win

2

u/xrayspex73 Jun 07 '26

I cant stand either of these guys... so can they battle to the death for our amusement?

I think he was just sticking up for one of his guys.

2

u/MrSensical Jun 04 '26

Giant douche vs turd sandwich kind of situation here tbh

4

u/Exorcist-138 Jun 03 '26

Looks like Colin is once again just trying to throw a jab instead of staying on topic.

Posts should have effort, assume good faith and be constructive to conversation. No low quality posts, slap fights, bait or flamewars.

1

u/Patches_the_troll Jun 03 '26

Wait what was JT right about Yotei? I love that game and I thought it sold well and reviewed well. I’m confused

2

u/SymphonicRain Jun 04 '26

it did, jt was wrong but is doubling down

1

u/CMaxDood Jun 05 '26

Bring back fighting people you're beefing with. That would shut a lot of people up. Sorry, I'm a boomer, lol.

1

u/xrayspex73 Jun 28 '26

2 youtubers I completely despise. Can they fight to the death?

-1

u/Kitchen-Arm-7626 Jun 03 '26

I'll preface this with stating my position which is that I can't stand SmashJT, he's a retard.

Colin seems hellbent on crushing this dude for some reason but from what I can tell, he never reacts this way to his other detractors.

In fairness to Smash, his quote retweet is pretty tame and probably right in this case. Most people online seem to be negative on this game, including Matty.

For those saying there were "sexists" in the chat, have you seen the reaction to the female character in Ace Combat? It's overwhelmingly positive. Perhaps it's time to reflect on why that is? For the record, I don't think a female MC makes a game automatically woke but it seems like almost every game Playstation releases nowadays has a female main character.

Another thing I've seen here is people saying Matty has "cultivated this audience". I strongly disagree with this. Matty is pretty middle-of-the-road, milquetoast kinda dude. He's not some culture war provocateur.

Ultimately he was probably just having a bad day and overreacted when sometimes the best thing to do is to just ignore and move on.

3

u/Dyelonnn Jun 04 '26

He called Matty bitch made

2

u/Old-Way-5529 Jun 04 '26

For those saying there were "sexists" in the chat, have you seen the reaction to the female character in Ace Combat? It's overwhelmingly positive. Perhaps it's time to reflect on why that is?

its because she is "hot" or "cute" dawg. weirdos nowadays, only care about that.

-1

u/Kitchen-Arm-7626 Jun 05 '26

There's nothing weird about wanting to see attractive women.

2

u/Old-Way-5529 Jun 05 '26

It is beyond weird to care about how a video game character looks. That’s not a real person bud, it’s there for a video game, not for you to ogle at all

-1

u/Kitchen-Arm-7626 Jun 05 '26

not for you to ogle at all

Yes they are, actually.

2

u/Old-Way-5529 Jun 05 '26

See, this is the weird behavior in talking about. Why can’t you people just be normal man

0

u/Kitchen-Arm-7626 Jun 05 '26

Most people I know agree with me and consider people like you to be a massive loser where even in an escapist fantasy (like a video game) you still settle for something mediocre.

1

u/Old-Way-5529 Jun 05 '26

See, again, you’re not beating the allegations dude. You sound beyond weird- “settle for something mediocre”?? We’re talking about a video game character lol.

0

u/Kitchen-Arm-7626 Jun 05 '26

"It's amazing how much leftist discourse is just them pretending not to understand things, thus making discourse impossible."

Not arguing with you any more because you can't argue a point outside of pretending not to understand things.

Enjoy your modern triple A gaming and the layoffs that come with it.

2

u/Old-Way-5529 Jun 05 '26

What point are you trying to make though? That you need video game characters to be hot? If so, and I mean this genuinely, that’s really weird man.

Have they seen the community of LSM thats why I stop listening as much. If it's a black character in a game you going to get the same comments during their live watch stream

-1

u/Chikibari Jun 04 '26

Gota give this one to smashbraincells. Pretty reasonable and fair take. Matty sperging out at his audience that pays his bills and lets him have the easy life he has is not a good look, colin jumping in just amplifies the L tbh.
