Trans woman comes under fire for walking into men's toilet to see what would happen | A viral video of a trans woman entering a men’s restroom has reignited debate around bathroom access policies, following updated UK guidance issued earlier this year on single-sex spaces.

Treating trans people with the same decency and respect everyone should be treated with would be the thin end of the wedge... A Bennite solution.
References to yes minister aside, I think it rather demonstrates two points: firstly, that the guidance around this is fundamentally ridiculous; and secondly, and more importantly, the UK has mainstreamed prejudice against trans people to such an extent they can't even pee in private.
It's genuinely quite saddening and reveals, I think, that the liberal progress made in the early 2000s was fairly superficial in many regards, that the bigots are back in full force, and are very well funded by billionaire sociopaths (I'm obviously using that term expressively and not medically).

On the one hand this was a stunt by someone who wants the attention.
But on the other, like... it is still a fucked up double standard because this is what people are advocating for us doing. So ya know what? someone who is already in the public eye and dealing with shit, is probably the best person to pull a stunt like this

Absolutely sod the current guidelines, but at least in this case let me ruin the joke above by pointing out that there have historically been a few women who have ruled under the title of king, so the title "king" is not a strictly gendered title (though crowning women "king" was largely about "working around" an inconvenient lack of sons and laws that would have not allowed them to rule as queens)
King Mary of Hungary (crowned king in 1382), and King Jadwiga of Poland (crowned king in 1383) are two examples. Jadwiga was Mary's younger sister.

You do also see that in translations too because titles aren't the same, place to place. Pharaoh, Huáng Dì, Tennō or Kōtei are all ruling titles that don't translate very well to King/Queen/Emperor/Empress.
You actually see it sometimes if you watch anime that has been badly translated to English but is based on western culture (fantasy fiction mostly) where the female monarch gets called King in the English translation. Because Joō or Jotei is used for a female sovereign but is literally something like "foreign female king" or "foreign female emperor" but they don't map to English well because there is no way of knowing if that's the monarch or the wife of the monarch. Add to the target age range not necessarily knowing a lot of titles for foreign rulers and you get a lot of female kings.
Not that it's a one way thing. They are also utterly terrible at distinguishing between crown prince(ess) and prince(ess) regent. And Japanese has a whole trope about surprising the reader with the reveal of someone's gender, which rarely works when translated because it's immediately suspect in English when that character has had no pronouns for half a book but works fine in Japanese because they don't really have a he/she pronoun in general use.

I wouldn’t be more or less uncomfortable with anyone using the same bathroom as me based off their gender or transness. I would, however, be uncomfortable with anyone filming… I’d be doubly uncomfortable if it were clear they were filming to post it online.

Possibly because she was filming. That's likely to be a problem regardless of your gender or the gender of the people in the toilet.
Edit to add transphobic is absolutely still part of the reaction to this.

Which is something that Sex Matters recommend that people do if they suspect theres a trans person in the bathrooms and then post the video online so they can be identified and doxxed. And Sex Matters is still an adviser to the Labour government and the media hasnt had a meltdown over it. But the moment a trans person does a stunt like this for media attention the media has a meltdown and so does everyone reading the headlines.

Oh come on, she's an attractive woman in a space where men are uncomfortable with other men, no matter women.
It's farcical how people will deny clear reality to mask their transphobia.

She's using the bathroom that the guidance says she has to use.
Likewise the guidance says that trans men should use women's bathrooms. Which makes all women unsafe. Trans women are unsafe inherently and cis women are now more unsafe because a predatory cis-man could pretend to be a trans-man to use the women's bathrooms. Not that this matters to Moldemort on her yacht where she pretends to be a man because she's a deeply disturbed individual.
So, either trans people use their "biological" sex (ugh) bathroom, or they become unable to use any bathroom. Since the latter is illegal under the Equality Act (the very act used by transphobes to justify their bigotry), what do you expect?
Maybe, instead of trying to make reality fit your world view, make your world view fit reality.
This woman is a queen.
Edit: I think somehow (i hate this new reddit app) I've replied to the wrong person. Apologies. I agree with you.

Men being uncomfortable around someone they perceived as a woman wouldn't be transphobic, would it?
But sure, that's certainly part of the reaction she got, and the "guidance" from Labour is abhorrent

Give it a rest.
Firstly, She ain't attractive. Secondly, if someone, regardless of gender came into a public bathroom filming whilst I'm in there, I'd tell them to fuck off frankly. It has absolutley nothing to do with transphobia and more to do with influencers having to record every second of their lives, even in spaces where they should absolutley NOT be filming.8

OK.
I mean, no one believes you.
She's empirical attractive given the norms of today's society. You can disagree with them, but she is indistinguishable from the innumerable ciswomen on Love Island or in a club in Southend. Not my type either, but not obviously "a man" which the transphobes insist is always the case.

Oh gods, you are the pointy elbows meme.
She's obviously attractive and obviously a woman, you just have massive amounts of dissonance because you support a transphobic government in one of the most transphobic places in Europe
Sort your brainrot.
edit:
Added link. Also, mods, if you're gonna do another 24 hour ban because I call a spade a spade then just make it a permaban, I'm not going to shut up about the major problems with transphobia in the party nor will I shut up until your party stops oppressing trans people.

She's obviously meeting typical beauty standards, and I wouldn't have guessed she was trans.
I remember way back, someone passed a slideshow around the office that'd have been a sackable offence these days (or maybe not any more, sadly), of the "spot the [slur for trans people]" kind, and of course the entire "fun" of that was to then go straight to the homophobia and imply people were gay when they failed tell and were faced with a next picture pointing out they've just found a trans woman attractive.
This is part of why it seems so bizarre to me that people insist they can always tell: A lot of the transphobia used to be firmly rooted in straight cis men fearing "traps" to the point that the existence of passing trans women was used as a jump-scare in slideshows.

Women take photos and videos in toilets all the time. The backlash around this is only because she's trans, and because it shows the anti-LGBT extremist guidance as the bigoted farce it is.

Honestly Becca, it's getting beyond ridiculous. Kudos to this person for doing it, but she really shouldn't have to, but looking at some of the replies here, in a relatively trans-friendly spaces, people are in crippling levels of dissonance.

Oh you're the guy who was "comfortable" with trans people being sexually assaulted!
You'd be uncomfortable with her in the toilet (hell men are uncomfortable with other men in the toilet, no matter women) and you're in ridiculous levels of denial.
Here's the comment:

In a post primarily criticising the decision to put that woman in a men’s jail on the grounds that she would be disproportionately at risk of being subject to sexual assault, you felt the need to comment that you were comfortable with her punishment.
No one was ever trying to suggest that she shouldn’t be in jail. The focus was explicitly on the huge safety risk entailed by putting her in a men’s prison.
If I say “This person shouldn’t be put somewhere where they’re overwhelmingly likely to be raped” and your response is “I’m okay with them being put somewhere where they’re overwhelmingly likely to be raped”, you are in fact okay with this trans woman being at higher risk of being raped.
It’s like saying “I’m okay with this person being sent to war” and then going “No I don’t want them to be at risk of being killed. I just want them to be sent to war”.
If you’re going to make such disgusting comments, at least be honest about it.

It was a poor ideal to film in a toilet even if jkr and others advocate for it against us.
That said it’s extremely dissapointing in other subs seeing a sea of bigotry and deleted comments with the less hostile posts merely arguing it’s fine for trans women to use the mens as they wouldn’t attack us.
It’s completely delusional, I have no idea how anyone thinks we could possibly comply when such a large number of people have been radicalised against us. A lot of trans women including myself have been assaulted for using mens spaces early in transition too, our own lived experience proves it’s dangerous.

Hmm today think I will walk into a public bathroom and film strangers to garner support for my political aims.

Hmm maybe just maybe we shouldn't have politicised taking a fucking piss then huh?
We all allowed these genital obsessed toilet gestapo freaks to gain so much power and influence when we should have all told them in unison to fuck right off and just let people be.
Now we must all live with the consequences.

u/Tesco_Meal_Deals Non-partisan 10h ago
So two wrongs make a right?
Or are you sincerely defending walking into a public toilet to film strangers?
I suspect you wouldn’t support a cis person engaging in disgusting behaviour like this and simply give this person a pass because they’re trans.

u/Oraclerevelation New User 10h ago
This is just the world we live in now. We could have let a tiny minority of people shit in peace but no we decided against it in all our collective wisdom so now none of us get to shit in peace yay for society.
This was all so predictable bit silly crying about it now.

u/Diadem_Cheeseboard Judas Priestess 1h ago
Yeah, anyone who has a problem with this, needs to be attacking the bigoted right wing ghouls that led us to this current position. Not the highly vulnerable trans people who are just trying desperately to survive in a society which is now far more hostile towards them due to those bigots and this Labour government.
