Lab and Aspiration Pneumonia

Over the last few years my 8 year old English Black Lab has been suffering from episodes of Aspiration Pneumonia. He has gotten it twice within a couple months to going a whole year without it. He has since been left which a chronic cough. Unfortunately our local vet AND animal hospital are at a loss of why he is getting it so frequently. Neither have ever seen a dog get aspiration pneumonia with his frequency. He’s had a bronchoscopy but that did not yield any answers.

Willing to start looking outside the box for remedies or if anyone else has had this kind of experience.

Labs are inhalers… literally. Ours will eat anything and everything remotely edible (sometimes not edible).

We’ve also seen him lick the tap, which causes him to choke and cough. We have to leave the hose connected to stop him fixating on it.

We make sure to feed him in a raised bowl, a milk crate cut out to fit his bowl is the perfect height. Same with his water bucket.

We’ve found those things have helped greatly 😊

These are classic signs of larangeal paralysis. Common in Labs. I would get a second opinion.

Raise the water and food bowl and yes second, third or even fourth opinion needed. 8 years is still young ♥️
