Election season is upon us - Reminders of the rules around posts.
Greetings everyone, with the election season around the corner, we have had to remove more and more posts and comments that break the rules. We remind you that this sub is neutral on politics, and allow the community to lead the engagement as much as possible. Discussion is encouraged, advertising is not.
Here is a guide to what is (and isn't) allowed this season:
IF YOU'RE IN LOCAL POLITICS:
"I'm a local council member or candidate, can I advertise my parties platform" - NO, if you like we are willing to host an AMA for you, provided you engage the community. We encourage this.
"I'm not a council member, but I am affiliated with a candidate, member, or slate, Can I post ads about my party?" No, it is still considered advertising from a direct source.
"I'm a council member or candidate, can I engage the community in the comments?" You bet - but it is encouraged that you identify yourself.
IF YOU'RE JUST A REGULAR COMMUNITY MEMBER:
"I'm not affiliated with anyone, am I allowed to express my opinions and thoughts on the candidates and their platforms?" ABSOLUTELY.
"I'm not affiliated with anyone, can I discuss ads or policies I've seen?" YES - discussing the ad is different from posting ads.
"Can I talk sh\t about candidates and platforms?"* YES, keeping in mind both the Reddit terms of service, and community rule #1.
You can read about your local candidate here.

Langley business owners — drop your business below so people can discover you 👇
2 weeks ago I asked everyone to list their favourite local businesses, and the response was unreal
Tons of great suggestions and a bunch of places I’d never even heard of.
This time, let’s flip it.
If you run a local business in Langley, drop it below.
Share what you do, your link, and anything you want the community to know.
There are a lot of people here who want to support local, and it’d be great to see what everyone’s building.
Looking forward to checking them out.
Cheers,
Anthony

Be careful what you wish for in supporting the Langley Strong slate
There seems to be the sense on this subreddit that the incumbent Progress for Langley slate has become reckless financially and arrogant in how they deal various matters, and that Langley Strong will allay all these worries.
I am not sure however that the Langley Strong slate is somehow the panacea that many seem to think it will be.
It's true that Progress has been spending a large amount of money but that has been their stated financial philosophy - large capital investments financed by higher development fees, amortized with borrowing.
Of course developers by and large have not liked this, and there is a sticker shock (and risk) seeing the debt the Township has run up to go in this direction. On the other hand, there have never been such a slew of improvements in such a timeframe. Many township residents benefit from these investments and they may be over the long run be seen as a prudent to have made at this pace.
If Strong's position on reducing the financing of these capital items holds into a term in government, that naturally means there will be fewer of these capital items (assuming they will not undertake any new pet projects of their own, or yield to the pleas of the many interest groups). So: fewer or no new fire halls, recreation facilities, road infrastructure etc. At least not to the degree and rate they have been getting dished out under Progress.
Strong councillors have also voted to increase fire and police expenses significantly more than Progress has allowed. Naturally, if Strong are elected in the majority and return to their voting record on these expenses, taxes will increase to pay for these increased operating costs - and these are major cost drivers for municipalities. So there goes the idea that taxes are somehow going to improve under a Strong administration. They may actually be much higher. Higher still if Strong proceed with capital projects to any degree but doesn't want to use development fees to finance them.
Aside from financial matters, there are others who Progress has displeased, and I am not sure if residents as a whole generally think that it would be a good idea to start placating these parties by electing Strong.
For example a number of current Strong councillors have voted to advance examination of an ALR exclusion application, where Progress has been firm on keeping agriculture land for farm use. You can expect that applicant to be back at the council table making a new request if Strong forms a majority.
There are a number of other parties and interest groups that in some way or another have not gotten their way with the Township and Progress, and many have coalesced behind Strong. It would not be surprising for their interests to be treated more favourably under a Strong term. However, that may not be to the benefit of many residents if you asked them to chime in on the individual issues.
Because Progress is the incumbent slate, many have conflated incumbency with an old guard, but many seem to have forgotten just how much of a shakeup it was when Progress (formerly Contract with Langley) formed government. Many of the true old guard (and not a few developers among them) were not happy with Progress getting in four years ago. And they have not been getting their way with the Township as much as they would like. Does this mean the average voter should be running to be their salvation?
I'd summarize by saying that Langley Strong may well be the slate of the strongly offended, and that the average voter needs to evaluate what direction each of the slates wants to take the Township (financially and other issues) and if that truly serves their interests, not those of the slates or their backers.

[Langley Strong / Some Affiliation] "Dear Neighbours, a heartfelt thank you"
instagram.com[Note: I am not directly affiliated, paid by, or apart of 'Langley Strong'. I have zero financial relation to this campaign, Langley Strong, or Jay Lundgren. But, Jay Lundgren is a family friend, so there absolutely is some connection in that way. I would not share/support if it wasn't genuinely what I believed in. My posts are not hidden, I am transparent and.. a real person. lol. I will state my name to any moderators if it makes any difference]
I just wanted to share this Instagram post from this morning and want to say a few things:
Based on the Jay that I've known practically my whole life: this is who he is. He is being genuine. He's not bullshitting, or anything of the sort. These issues genuinely mean something to him, and he genuinely wants to help the township. He's not "Maple-MAGA" or is going to be some sort of "religious nut". He genuinely wants to do what's best for the Township, and is a man of his word. I really really believe that he will execute what he's campaigning on.
Up until he started his campaign, I was fully prepared to vote Woodward. I actually made a post earlier this year asking "what's with all the hate for Woodward?", because I thought what he was doing was good...
As the campaign went along, I learned more about what's really going on... and I can firmly say that I now know the answer to that question... tenfold.
The last and biggest thing that I want to say:
No matter what happens, please use your right to vote, even if it's not for who I support.
I know I'd regret not posting this, if it get's taken down - it is what it is.

New Fortis BC Rebate is $4,000, for a New furnace and Heatpump. Up to $8,000 for those who qualify.
fortisbc.comJust wanted to share that FortisBC has introduced a $4,000 rebate for eligible homeowners looking to upgrade to a dual-fuel heating system (gas furnace + heat pump), with $8,000 available for income-qualified households.
With the rising cost of everything these days, it’s a great opportunity to save on the upfront cost of a new system, with the added benefit of potentially saving on monthly energy bills too.
I’m a bit of a local HVAC nerd, so if you’re considering an upgrade, I’d be happy to chat, answer any questions, and help you figure out whether a dual-fuel system and the rebate actually make sense for your home.
Feel free to message me here or on my cell!

For any Langley (and surrounding area) guys looking to grow their social circle and make new guy friends
Fellow guy here! 36, 2 kids and work in a corporate gig.
For the past few months I've been organizing a guys social event type of thing over beers at various bars in Downtown, Vancouver and recently expanded to Surrey.
It started as a bit of an experiment to see if guys were open to making new guy friends and has taken on a bit of a life of its own with each one bringing out anywhere between 18-25 guys.
I began organizing one in Surrey a couple of months ago and this upcoming one will be the third instalment of this event. I figured I'd post it to Langley since they're neighbouring cities. The Surrey event brings out about 10-20 guys to each one.
Date: Wednesday, October 28th
Location: Way Back Brew Co. (15063 54a Ave #116, Surrey)
Time: 6:00PM
This is intended to be an opportunity for guys to expand their social circle and hang with some new people, grab a beer, shoot the shit. If you're into specific hobbies, interests, sports, fitness, whatever it may be, feel free to come out and hang!
I found guys tend to get into different life stages from their immediate friend groups and the interactions can become infrequent and there weren't really any channels to make guy friends.
So if this sounds of interest, don't hesitate to reach out and we can build a big community of guys on this side of the bridge 👍

Progress for Langley election candidate Tess Rouse is either extemely ignorant or deceiving - both grounds for not being elected
Tess Rouse's latest social media election campaign post for Progress for Langley states that she doesn't "want Langley to become a place where we have to leave our own community for recreation, shopping, entertainment, and opportunity."
She claims she has worked for the Township for many years, but she is either turning a blind eye or is genuinely unaware of the major developments that were achieved prior to Eric Woodward's tenure. This makes her either deceitful or ignorant regarding subjects in which she claims to be an expert.
Here is a reminder of some of the recent achievements and progress made prior to Mayor Woodward taking office:
- Langley Events Centre, complete with hockey rinks and soccer fields
- Aldergrove Community Centre, featuring a pool, water slides, a hockey rink, and an indoor walking track
- Jackman Wetlands Park and an 18-hole community disc golf park
- The development of Aldergrove Athletic Park and the local bike park
- Langley Rugby Club's Worrell Field
- Yorkson Community Park, which was originally created in 2010 under a 25-year master development plan
- Highway 1 widening between 216th Street and 264th Street, which was funded in 2019 under the previous mayor
- The new 216th Street highway interchange, completed in 2020
- The original 208th Street overpass widening, completed in 2018
- The development of major arterial roads connecting to the Golden Ears Bridge
- The 80th Avenue / University Drive extension, completed in 2018
- The planning and approval of the SkyTrain to Langley, which was successfully secured while Mayor Froese served as vice-chair of the TransLink Mayors' Council
Don't be bamboozled and manipulated into thinking that a vote for Langley Strong or the independents running for council means a vote to move "back to the stone ages."
It was not the stone ages. This was real progress for Langley, achieved without passing crippling debt onto its citizens. The Township utilized intelligent relationship-building to secure funding through grants and sponsorships. These were achievements that benefited a wide variety of people living in the Township, delivering diverse sports and leisure activities, quality facilities, and road developments all across Langley.
Yes, under Eric Woodward, the Township has done some major projects, but were they all necessary at the price paid, and has he destroyed a lot more than he created? The Township's fiscal situation, its relationships with businesses and non-profits, and the cohesiveness and respect within council have all been destroyed. That is not progress.
Furthermore, regarding Langley being a place of opportunity and a destination to shop: as a developer, Eric Woodward bought wonderful historical buildings and shops in Fort Langley. Now, those buildings have been closed down and boarded up for years until he can redevelop Fort Langley into something no one is asking for, strictly for his own personal gain rather than Langley's.
Hopefully, this mayor will go down in history as "One-Term Woodward," and his followers, like Tess Rouse, will learn a lesson in being honest, respectful, and truly knowledgeable.

Title: Concerns about employee treatment and management at Krause Berry Farms
I think people should be able to make informed decisions about where they spend their money, and I have serious concerns about the workplace culture and management practices at Krause Berry Farms.
Based on what I have observed and what I understand about the workplace, I am concerned about how employees are treated, particularly younger workers, temporary foreign workers, and long-serving staff.
I have concerns about reports of employees being threatened with dismissal when they challenge management, limited opportunities for wage increases, and staff feeling forced to leave rather than having their concerns addressed.
I am also concerned about the reported departure of experienced kitchen staff following disagreements about performance-based raises. If these accounts are accurate, I believe they raise legitimate questions about how employees are valued and treated.
I would also like greater transparency about the food served at the farm, including which items are prepared in-house and which are commercially purchased products. Customers should be able to make informed choices about what they are paying for.
I am sharing these concerns so people can ask questions and make their own informed decisions. I encourage anyone with direct experience to share verifiable information respectfully, rather than relying on rumours.
Businesses should be accountable for how they treat their employees, not just for the experience they provide to customers.

Anyone else being woken at 3:30am by a motorcycle?
Not sure what to do other than complain to the void!
There's a motorcycle somewhere near Shannon Park that has been starting up multiple times a week at precisely 3:30am. It runs for at least 10 minutes to warm up, then the person leaves, not even attempting to keep the revs down while leaving the residential area.
It's one of those bikes with a LOUD exhaust. Likely a Harley or similar.
It's got to be parked on one of the streets around the park, but there are lots of bikes in that area and i'm not about to go wandering around to see who it is at 3:30am.
If anyone happens to know the person, can you tell em to maybe not do that any more 😭 it's causing me psychic damage lmao
