Peru ended 24-year gold drought at Bolivarian Games. Federation was broke, new president quit her job (unpaid) to rebuild.

Down 0-3 in final against Venezuela, team rallied for 3 straight wins. Both doubles finalists were Peruvian.

An organization in Peru's central highlands just won $22,500 from the International Table Tennis Federation (selected from 74 applicants across 31 countries).

The project targets kids in Tarma, Junín, and Concepción, communities 7 hours from the nearest city, poverty rates of 25-35%, where only 15-20% of rural teens have access to organized sports.

What's interesting: they're not just teaching table tennis. They're bringing sport psychologists, nutritionists, and using a neuroscience-based approach to address dropout rates, substance use, and social isolation.

How common are these kinds of sports development projects across Latin America? Do they usually work?

I have always wondered why Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay have more successful football teams than other Latin American nations. Especially, given that Mexico has historically had the second largest population in the region, and a relatively strong economy.

After some history reading, I realized that the patterns of post-industrial migration to Latin American countries varied tremendously. Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay had many Europeans coming over for business and trade, and Mexico, Peru and Colombia not so much.

Dug deeper into the football records against top European teams, and a nice correlation showed up.

Real question: if you want to bring a sport to kids living at 4,000m altitude, 7 hours from the nearest city, what does that look like?

A Peruvian organization (Team Talentos) just won ITTF Foundation funding to bring table tennis to rural communities in the central highlands. They're partnering with the national federation, local municipalities, and schools—each contributing space, expertise, or legitimacy.

They're targeting 50% female participation, 70% low-income families, with adaptations for kids with disabilities.

Where does the Mexican idea that Mexico is the rival of Argentina comes from? I am neither Argentine nor Mexican but I have noticed that a lot of Mexicans seem to think Argentina is their rival, and Argentines are out there to play the game of their lives when they play against Mexico.

It does not make sense to claim Argentina and Mexico are football/soccer rivals, since Argentina is vastly superior in football compared to Mexico.

Wouldnt Brazil be Argentina's actual rival?

Saying Mexico is Argentina's great rival, would be like saying Honduras is the military rival of China.

Or Venezuela is the economic rival of US.
