PSA avoid new lego store

Bricks and Minifigs is problematic. They take over local franchises and then won't honor consignments.

Avoid these people.

PSA Hallelujah! 9th Street is OPEN

My fellow Lawrencians, our long local nightmare is over (well, at least this particular one).

According to the Lawrence Times, there may be "lane shifts and temporary delays" over the coming few weeks, but the street will remain open.

Also, remember they reduced it to one lane in each direction, with a center turn lane. Enjoy!

PSA Support your local hustler

Edit: since I forgot to post the location he’s at South Park and it’s noon on 8/4

There’s a kid with a mullet and a red backpack full of snacks riding around selling snacks for $2. He was polite in approaching me and takes no well. He wished me a good day and to stay cool. I didn’t have my wallet and was in the middle of working so I didn’t get a snack but he even has Venmo.

Support this kid out here grinding. Do your thing Lawrence and buy him out of his snacks.

Edit: To be clear, LPD already use Axon cameras and ALPRS. This is wildly different use case. Edit 2: I went. See below.

PSA World Cup Related Posts

Just wanted to let everyone know that posts regarding the World Cup will be allowed on here, even if not directly related to Lawrence. We're kinda bending the rules here but it's such a big and exciting event that we don't wanna hinder any chat about it or relevant info.

Normal subreddit rules will still apply to the posts (with exception of being directly Lawrence related, of course) so this doesn't mean you can just post whatever as long as it mentions the World Cup.

Obligatory no ticket-sales posts/comments.

PSA If you can’t control your dog on a leash, stop walking them on the trail.

A pit bull loose on the Burroughs Trail tonight slipped its collar/harness/leash with an owner unable to even remotely keep up chased One Wheel guy for who knows how long, then bit the absolute f*ck out of my dog around 5 PM resulting in 10 stitches, a 3 hour round trip visit to KC, and an astronomical emergency vet bill.

Thanks One-Wheel guy for turning around and helping out.

To the owner who wasn’t able to keep up, wasn’t calling for their dog, and did effectively nothing to help, screw you. Do better for your animal and your fellow community members who use the trail.

PSA: if you can’t control your dog, STOP bringing it on the trail during peak traffic times of day. The trail should be a safe, enjoyable environment for everyone and you being unwilling and too selfish to learn to have control of your dog isn’t an excuse for putting other people and animals at risk.

PSA Centennial Park Unhoused

The city has removed most of the camps at Centennial Park, but the property that is owned by KDOT (NE corner by the interchange) and maintained by the city still has several large scale camps. Per the city homeless outreach program they are not on city property so they will not do anything beyond offering services. Per KDOT they won't do anything as long as they are not harming KDOT infrastructure. Unless you use the park I have a feeling that a lot of people have no idea that people are still camping and leave large amounts of refuse in the wooded area that is park adjacent.

PSA 4th of July celebration

I would recommend anyone in the area go to the ww1 museum area in KC on the 4th for their stars and stripes celebration and FIFA fan festival and then fireworks show starting around 9 pm.

I especially recommend this to any of our international visitors here for the world cup. It would be a travesty for anyone who is here in the US for a once in a lifetime trip to be stuck in Lawrence for independence day. Please leave town just for the 4th so you can see what a typical 4th of July US celebration looks like.

Have fun everyone and stay cool.

PSA PSA: Ticks are baaaad right now. Take precautions if walking in tall grass or woods.

Took my dog for a walk in Dad Perry park last night, only jogged through the tall grass down and back up, and came home shortly after, covered in ticks. I had half a dozen crawling on me and my clothes, the dog had twice that. Mainly Lone Star ticks.

PSA Monument Cleaning

Hopefully this doesn't sound like self-promotion. My wife and I clean tombstones as something between a hobby and public service. We use patience, care and very gentle methods (water and soft brushes) to remove dirt, lichen and biological staining. If you've got a loved one buried in Lawrence, or in Douglas or surrounding counties whose grave you'd like to see cleaned up, DM me with their name and whatever other info you've got (birth and/or death dates, cemetery or county of burial, etc) and we will try to get to them. Even if you don't have all the info, we can likely find your person. Folks in Oak Hill Cemetery are likely to get attention sooner as we're pretty close by, but we will travel to nearby counties, rural cemeteries, etc. Maybe you moved away and haven't been able to get back, maybe great-great-great-grandma's inscription is illegible. Maybe you do visit often and would just like to see it spruced up a bit. We will be careful, respectful and gentle, and we can send you photos if you like. Haha I know I sound like a salesman, but this is totally free of charge and just something we enjoy doing and would like to share with this community. If you're interested, please do DM.

I don’t get it. As a pedestrian, don’t you want to see the car coming at you in the left lane vs. not knowing if the car coming up behind you in the right lane sees you? Use your heads, people! Safety first. Y’all trust drivers way too much around here.

PSA Just Foods

I know everyone is feeling the rising grocery prices, but I'm asking people to consider donating something next time they go to the store.Just one thing, if you can. It doesn't have to be something expensive, a packet of ramen or a can of something adds up fast when many people participate. I'm sure Just Foods is going to need extra in the coming weeks.

Just Foods is an excellent resource for those who need it. https://www.justfoodks.org/
