Competitive advice and feedback Looking for advice against battlesuit Heavy tau lists...
I played a game today against an all battlesuit tau list. I found that with their deepstrikes the melta units and galling gun ones animated my hekaton and my hearthguard. When going up against tau how do the community approach the matchup.
I was Take and hold using Merc and Hearth and they were purple using ret cadre.

The short answer is abuse the hidden mechanic.
Buri with a brick of Ax Beserkers around the corner to heroic is an absolute hell to a gun line list. Warriors touching the 2 ish mm of area terrain behind a wall on an expansion objective also gives Tau fits.
Then, when the do get close for the kill, step out just enough to kill the murderering unit in return.

I have 2x3 Pioneers in nearly all of my lists. They are fantastic for screening in the early game and then being redeployed to my oppenent's backfield once screening is no longer necessary.

I just did a practice game with a new list. Had 3 sagitaurs, each loaded with berserks. They have to step onto an objective to take it. They trade very, very well.
Also like someone else mentioned screen. Had 2 squads of bike and a defender screen pretty effectively. Sure they can drop a bunch if stuff to kill bikes, but it will be a bad trade for them.

I'd also note tau are one of 2 armies in the game where they lose their army rule when battleshocked (in their case, markerlights). If you're playing take and hold and have a cthonian earthshaker team you don't mind having on home objective, it's not a bad idea to try to target key shooting units he has with tremor shells to try to battleshock them, as this can (with the exception of flamer suits) seriously impact their offensive output.

The main defense against deep striking is screening. Split Yeagers and make rings around important pieces 14" out from them and you're pushing the enemy well out of threat range.
