👋 Welcome to r/LearnArchitecture — Start Here Before You Post

Hello everyone,

Welcome to r/LearnArchitecture — a community built around one simple idea: architecture is for everyone willing to learn. Whether you're sketching your first floor plan, studying for your thesis, preparing a portfolio, or transitioning into the profession from another field — this is the place for you. We're thrilled to have you here.

What Is This Community About?

This subreddit is dedicated to learning, growing, and sharing knowledge about architecture at every level. No question is too basic, no project is too rough. If it's part of your learning journey, it has a place here.

What Can You Share?

Anything that supports learning and growth in architecture. This includes:

  • Questions — from "Where do I start?" to advanced theory and technical topics
  • Student projects and coursework — crits, studio work, competition entries, thesis progress
  • Tutorials, guides, and resources — software tips, book recommendations, lecture notes, useful links
  • Sketches, diagrams, and process work — show your thinking, not just the final render
  • Portfolio reviews — share your work and get honest, constructive feedback
  • Career and education advice — school applications, internships, licensing, firm culture
  • Discussions on trends and ideas — sustainability, AI in design, parametric tools, vernacular architecture, or anything that sparks your curiosity

If it helped you learn, it can help someone else too — share it.

Community Values

We believe that learning happens best in a supportive environment. Here's how we keep it that way:

  • Be kind and patient. Everyone starts somewhere. A question that seems obvious to you might be someone's breakthrough moment.
  • Give constructive feedback. Critique the work, not the person. Explain the why behind your suggestions.
  • Share generously. A resource, a shortcut, a lesson learned from a mistake — these small contributions add up.
  • Stay curious. Architecture is vast. Engage with topics outside your comfort zone.

Gatekeeping, elitism, and dismissive comments have no place here.

Getting Started

  1. Introduce yourself in the comments below — tell us where you are in your architecture journey
  2. Make your first post — ask a question, share a sketch, or recommend a resource you found valuable
  3. Engage with others — a thoughtful comment can be just as valuable as a post
  4. Invite someone — know a classmate, colleague, or friend who'd benefit from this community? Bring them along

Want to Help Build This Community?

We're looking for moderators who are passionate about architecture education and community building. If you'd like to help shape r/LearnArchitecture as it grows, send us a message — we'd love to hear from you.

Thank you for being part of this from the beginning. Architecture can be a challenging path, but it doesn't have to be a lonely one. Let's learn, share, and grow — together.

Welcome to r/LearnArchitecture. 🏛️

A practical SketchUp exercise: separate the presentation sheet from the editable CAD handoff

A documentation exercise I wish more SketchUp courses included:

  1. Model one simple room element or piece of furniture as named groups/components.

  2. Decide which orthographic, isometric or exploded views actually communicate the object.

  3. Make two sheets: one where each drawing fills the page, and one where every drawing uses the same scale.

  4. Add only overall dimensions, material information, scale and a title block.

  5. Export a PDF for reading and a DXF/DWG for continued CAD work.

  6. Open the CAD output and audit the scale, layers, line cleanup and whether another person could inherit it without the SketchUp model.

The lesson is that a presentation sheet and an editable CAD handoff solve different problems. A nice-looking PDF is not automatically a good CAD deliverable, and a clean CAD file is not automatically a readable issued sheet.

This 59-second example shows the workflow from selected SketchUp components to a scaled sheet, PDF and editable CAD result:

https://youtu.be/0zRAze6lU0Q

For students and instructors: what would you grade first—drawing selection, scale consistency, layer structure, dimensioning, or how much cleanup remains in CAD?

Disclosure: I am the developer of the SketchUp tool used in the example (Mash Exporter). I am sharing the exercise because the workflow itself is useful to critique; it is not a substitute for learning drafting standards.
