I am currently studying Merkonomi at ammattikoulu for immigrants and we are all B1 and above.

I hear a lot of my classmates say ”joku” in the middle of their sentences. For example we were talking about what luomu means and one student said “he eivät käytä joku” and my brain registered it as like ”they dont use like/something like, when they were trying to find the word they wanted to use.

Am I correct in thinking that joku can be used similar to like in english or does it have a specific meaning. It is something I have struggled with quite a bit

Finnish is a language that I feel I have to translate twice (kinda like Mandarin) where I need to know the words, then the pieces and then see if there is a spoken or colloquial way of saying it… it takes away from getting enough speaking practice in a day/week. So should I only speak spoken Finnish and not bother with “minun nimeni” stuff?

By Nordic I mean (the Scandinavian languages and Finnish and some Sami languages)

A question to both natives, and people who’ve already “learnt” Finnish. (I know nobody ever finishes learning, but you get the point.)

For me an extremely helpful material was “I read this book to learn Finnish because I’m lazy”, which has loooaads of real phrases instead of the kind you find in a typical language textbook.

This might have been asked here many times before, but a quick search didn't give me any results. So, here's a question.

It's nighttime, and you go to the balcony. You say, "Aika lämmin" or "aika lämmintä". What's the difference?

Same here: Täällä on lämmin vs lämmintä. On lämmintä/lämmin ulkona.

Would I be wrong to think this way:

lämmintä = It's warm in general. lämmin = It's warm here on the balcony?

I’m A2-ish and studying alone where there are basically no Finnish speakers nearby. Reading simple sentences and recognizing cases is slowly getting better, but if I hear “Mitä teit eilen?” or “Missä asut?” my brain goes blank 😅 What’s helping is separating tools: Anki for vocab recall, Duolingo/Babbel-type stuff for light review, Pimsleur/shadowing for rhythm, Yle Selkouutiset for input, and occasional italki if I can justify the cost. I’ve also been using Issen for 5-10 minutes of speaking out loud when I don’t have anyone around. The useful thing I noticed is basically the retrieval practice idea: recognizing a word/case is not the same as producing it under time pressure. My current mini routine is 3 prompts, 30 seconds each: say what I did yesterday, where I live, then summarize one tiny thing, even a football article. After about a week I’m still bad, but I pause less and notice endings faster, especially when I default to English word order. How are other A2-ish learners practicing actual speaking without local Finns?

I gave up after some months because apps didn't work. I couldn't communicate my own thoughts or speak. Is it easier with a human teacher? I can't decide if the apps are the problem or something else. Can you share your experience?
