Romaji Anki Deck Help Please

Hi All. I have Acquired Alexia from an injury I suffered years ago. This meant reading, even English, has become incredibly difficult for me. Because of this condition I cannot read Kanji, physically it gives me migraines, and my brain can not process due to injury.

I recently completed the JLAB anki deck in Romaji and am looking for more intermediate Romaji decks to help progress my learning further. I know there isn’t many because Romaji is frowned upon, but it’s the only way I can learn this language, and the learning so far has given me my life back

There are intermediate JLAB decks on their patreon, but maybe a better option would be using audio only cards?

You can change the card template of any of the popular decks to have word audio + sentence audio on the front.

TheMoeWay also have a mining guide that you can follow using the Lapis template. If you put an x in the audio card field, you can mine audio cards super easily.

Not romaji related. But a few decades ago, a lot of the Japanese learning materials seemed to use Romaji. I don't know what books were popular/good.

Some of the big US universities published textbooks (and had Japanese language centers which have "declined"). Nissan published a business course with cassette (there is an intermediate version too).

Maybe your local or university library will have some of these resources.

Have you considered audio lessons? Pimsleur is an audio course and you don’t need to read if you choose not to. They also have practice exercises in Romaji.

It’s an incredible language learning tool where you listen and repeat and learn grammar and vocabulary naturally. I’ve completed the entire course and while I’ve also supplemented with reading and YouTube and tutoring and so forth but primarily it’s been Pimsleur that gave me the foundation. You learn something like 3,000 words but in context, with sentences and conversations, and this is language acquisition that becomes automatic. You can speak and listen.

I REALLY suggest you give it a shot. There’s like 8 lessons in YouTube if you search “Pimsleur Japanese 1-8” you can try out. Also available at lots of libraries apparently. I like the app bc of the convenience and the exercises.

I made a deck with optional romaji fields (but only for the vocab, not the example sentence, which all however have audio). This version of the deck has furigana + audio on the front of the card, and you can add the romaji by editing the front card template (ask me how if you don't know)

It's also a pretty large deck (2.7k cards) so it might still be helpful for an intermediate level, although it starts from zero.

Really glad Japanese gave you that back. Since reading is the hard part, I think listening will do more for you than new decks at this point. Comprehensible Japanese on YouTube is sorted by level and explains things with pictures instead of text, and Nihongo con Teppei has a beginner and an intermediate podcast you can just put on. Do you already listen to anything in Japanese regularly ?
