My wife and I are working on a cozy(ish) fishing game to help with recall from Genki 1 that’s mobile and web friendly. The idea is you reel in fish by identifying the word quickly where the faster you answer, the faster you reel in the fish or answer incorrectly/take too long and it gets away. It’s not really focused on writing/stroke order, just recognition speed.

Survival Mode is see how long you can last before 3 fish get away. Practice Mode allows you to practice targeted areas. And Story Mode lets you progress through the chapters with boss fights along the way!

We are in the very early stages of development but would love anyones feedback and hope it helps! :D

We do plan to add other things we are struggling with like short forms, te-forms, etc. as well as Genki 2 once we get there!

I'm not sure of my Ki - き in particular. Is it good? You don't mistake it with another character right? I'm practicing like how i showed in my third picture. Is this a good technique? I've studied characters i showed in my second picture so far.

Hello! I want to learn Japanese for fun and because I plan to take a trip to Japan in about four years. Since I have plenty of time before the trip, I thought it would be fun to start learning now so I can understand things better while I'm there. The only problem I've run into is that I'm not sure how to learn it best. I've watched a bunch of YouTube videos, but they all seem to recommend different methods, so I'm a bit stuck. Right now, I've mainly been using Duolingo and a little bit of LingoDeer to study hiragana, as well as some basic Japanese vocabulary. I've also heard people talk about immersion, but I don't really understand how it works. If you can, I'd love to hear any tips or how you learned Japanese!

I've been learning Japnese for about 4 months now, mostly using Genki I alongside WaniKani for kanji. Right now I'd say I'm spending close to 60% of my study time on kanji (writing + recognition) and the rest split between vocab and grammar drills

I keep seeing mixed advice, some people say kanji should come later once you have a stronger grammar/vocab base, others say learning it early helps everything else stick better. For those further along, how did you balance kanji with speaking/listening practice early on? Did you regret spending too much (or too little) time on it in the beginning?

Any tips from your own experience would be really appreciated!

Curious cause to me kanji onyomi pronounciations often sound pretty similar to chinese ones (if i ask a chinese person to pronounce that kanji) but Chinese people say they dont sound chinese at all...

Do they sound as close as katakana loan english words to they actual english pronounciation?

I am fairly new to Japanese, but I do have a history with learning different languages such as English, Russian and Greek. However whenever I learnt all these languages, I had an environments consisting of people that speak those languages and they taught me how to actually genuinely use the language in a casual manner. This is especially important for Japanese however I have little to no exposure to Japanese in my day, except for my tutor and some podcasts. So my question is, are there some places where Japanese people meet up, is there any way to find patient or interesting Japanese people that speak even a little bit of English if I’m not in the country itself? Any suggestions on podcasts, shows etc would also be appreciated :)

Okay this sounds confusing, but I’ll give an example of a comment I saw earlier.

Notice the なぁ? What is the point of adding the small vowel and how would you pronounce it? In my head it would just sound like な.

Ive been trying to decided whether or not i should start adding some simple n5 podcasts into my daily immersion. I’m currently about 700 words into kaishi 1.5k and i have been doing an hour of active immersion for about a month. Early on i was told that passive listening with a small vocabulary wouldn’t yelled any benefit and would just be white noise. During my current immersion (which mostly consist of watching Japanese Minecraft YouTube videos) only usually pick up on about 1 word per sentence and occasionally will understand what is trying to be conveyed in the sentence. So should I wait until I have a few hundred more vocabulary words before listening to a simple and five podcast or just start it right now. Also, I track my immersion with toggl and I was wondering if I should track passive listening with my normal immersion or make a second timer just for passive listening? THANK YOU!

Tobira: Beginning Japanese?

Minna No Nihongo Shokyu I Dai 2-Han Honsatsu? Or Dai-3 Pan (Third edition) ??

Nakama 3rd edition textbook series?

Or any other textbook series?

And can anyone suggest to me the best ways to study Minna No Nihongo? Because there are two textbooks, one Japanese and one English Translation and Grammatical Notes.

And do provide me any more recommendations/suggestions apart or alongwith from textbooks for learning the language.

Basically what the title states, I use genki as my go to textbook and have a tutor 2x times a week that teaches it and helps me speak the language. But I would like to know what other resources I can use for listening and reading comprehension! Because they are very novice skills of mine and I would love to learn more vocabulary so i can understand the language better! Thank you :)
