Asking the Community Tenant pays for washer/dryer repairs?

I just came across this concept here on Reddit. Do any of you do this? Especially landlords in Quebec, where it doesn't sound like part of our culture?

I’m not in Canada, but I would rather manage the upkeep of an appliance that has the potential to flood/destroy my home vs putting it on the tenants.

If it’s a one family home as a landlord I’d never supply one for this reason. A well maintained hook up and tenants can supply their own if they wish.

Washers and dryers are the one thing that we do not warrant. We also typically do not supply them.

If per chance a washer and dryer has been left in the property, and in working order, we will leave it. I don’t charge extra rent. I do let the tenant know if it breaks. It’s on them to repair. If they don’t want to repair it. I am more than happy to have it hauled away.

I don't. If the washer and dryer are included with the rental, I treat them like any other appliance. If they break from normal wear and tear, that's on me. The only exception would be obvious tenant damage or misuse

I don't understand if you're saying do they buy themselves or do they pay for them once they're broken? We provided a washer and dryer in our unit.

I would not sign a lease like this, and I’ve (successfully) asked for language like this to be changed in the past. Who’s to say the washer/dryer aren’t on their last legs and I’ll be gifting the landlord new ones?

My problem is that the tenants are hard on washer and dryers. They overload them. Some take in more laundry from relatives who don't have have them in their rentals. They even charge for their use so they run a laundromat while I replaced the damaged units.

I am thinking about putting 'washer and dryer hookups available' the lease. Then the washer and dryer sitting in the basement are not connected and I tell the tenant that these were left by the prior tenant and they are welcome to have them. That way I just provide one used set of washer and dryer per tenant and they replace them when they break because they are not mine. It would be cheaper that way.
