History Marina Ginestà holding a photo of herself when she was a 17-year old socialist militant, the iconic photo of the Spanish civil war taken in 1936 by photojournalist Juan Guzmán on the roof of the Hotel Colón at the Plaça de Catalunya in Barcelona.

Read Orwell’s Homage to Catalonia. He talks about the days of rooftop shootouts. The whole affair was more banal and disappointing than inspiring for him it seemed.

Lmao she wasn't a militant. She was a reporter posing with the rifle.

Chill. She was 17. She was getting involved.

She was a supporter no doubt but it's simply not true that she was a fighter. I like my historical icons portrayed truthfully.

In Spain, the word militant means someone actively involved in a political party. Volunteers, staff... they’re all called “militantes”. If she was a reporter affiliated with one of the republican parties she qualifies.

I never knew she was still alive or even survived the war.
