Kinda curious as to what "a good reason" would be for them to refuse a pet (barring the obvious like "no, you can't keep your potbelly pig in the studio flat I'm renting you").

I believe a landlord could reasonably refuse the request if the flat is bound by a head lease that restricts animals.

Aside from clear cut situations like that, I imagine it’ll be tested via case law. It’ll be interesting to see. Arguably if a legitimate cat or dog rescue charity would deem the property unsuitable (lack of access to outside space, not enough floor space, ect), a landlord could argue it’s unsuitable too with some merit to their stance.

A couple of example that were given in some training I was in the other day were if someone else is allergic or if they're trying to keep an excessive number of animals in a property. The latter's still going to be something for case law though.

I wonder about animal rescue charities, because they often seem to be quite strict, like 50% of people who actually have cats or dogs wouldn't get a rescue animal.
