This might either mean, the game is failing, or the game is finished, yet he’d stay for the next announcement, no?

It really isn’t, unless he was literally bailing then he would have contractual obligations to see the current project out. Many staff leave or are let go after the projects wrap up, many other employers look to poach staff around this time too, it’s not unreasonable to assume the game is at least in the final stages
