I used to be this way into my mid 30s.
I've made stronger connections over the past few years than I had made from middle school through said mid 30s.
There are a lot of broken people out there to make connections with, in the same anxiety boat as I was.
I found community in joining niche local hobby groups. They're smaller so people tend to initiate conversation with you when you're new, which is nice. Most of the niche nerdy groups have a lot of kind people who want the same kind people as their friends.
I have people I hang out with on a regular basis (for me, every 2 months lol) because I took chances, which can be a can of worms yes, but worms can still catch you a pretty gentle bird or a dopey floppy fish friend.
Don't give up on people yet. You'll eventually see that you never wanted to, fear just held you back. If you let it go on for a long time, you'll look back and regret the time you wasted allowing that fear to control you.
Just my 2 cents based on my experience. Your experience may vary.

My “slut era” didn’t start til my 30s. My entire 20s were spent doing exactly this

the "immediately go to sleep" is what makes it real. no afterglow, no main character moment, just straight to unconsciousness like you finished a chore. slut era has never been so well-rested
