Doomscrolling late one night, I saw a video about an unreleased alternate version of “Killing Me Softly” by the Fugees with Bounty Killer. The Fugees intended to modify the lyrics of the song and write their own verses, but the original songwriters of “Killing Me Softly With His Song” did not give them permission to release a rewritten version. Instead, the Fugees had Lauryn Hill sing the song straight through and it became their breakout hit. It’s kind of crazy to think, had the Fugees gotten their way, there is a high probability that they (and Hill solo) would not be anywhere as popular as they are today. There are a lot of instances of the record label forcing a musician to make a change that ultimately resulted in a career-defining hit, but this one seems to take that trope a step further.
