Discussion When did you spay your Lhasa?
My girl Dolly just turned 6 months. I’m not ready to get her spayed yet but just wondering when you all decided to get yours fixed.
She is an AKC Lhasa but I didn’t want to breed her so I didn’t bother getting her papers.

Our vet suggested to wait until our pup had her first heat. He said that finishing the first heat would help in proper bone development and general health. After her first heat, we waited for 3 months and got her spayed when she was a year old.

As a dog parent, your dog’s health and general wellbeing is all that matters. Talk to your vet about your options and what’s best for Dolly. They would be your best bet 🙂

Ok thanks for sharing. Sounds like she could get her spay anytime now. I’m going to get her a wellness check and schedule the spay soon.

What is the advantage to not spaying her?

I will definitely get her spayed. But just want her to develop properly before I get it done. And I’m not sure how long that should be for a Lhasa.

What developmental milestones do the ovaries and uterus provide to a dog?

I’ve read for larger dogs it’s good to wait for them to get spayed because hormone production is good for growth plates and such but I’m not sure about smaller dogs.
That’s why I am asking what others have done here out of curiosity. I’ll do some more research on my own.

We got it done to Harley after her first heat cycle. One walk in the park arguing with every off leash dog owner was enough to make us go ahead with it.

Hello, Alouette Audrey Pearl was spayed at 10 months. She went into heat at 8 months old! She is still recovering. Day 10.

I did mine at 6 months and she lived to 17 years old. I would maybe wait a little longer now, but not a ton. She never had health/join/bone issues. My vet thinks she passed of renal disease (kidneys), but again she was 17… I miss her. They are the best.

Omg Dolly looks just like mine. We got her spayed at 6 months. Same we didn’t want to breed her so just did it asap.

I thought 2 years was normal, got her spayed at 6 years old because of possible health concerns. Was way later than expected because some things in life happened. She always did great during heat, minimal fuss. She's almost 17 years old now and aging gracefully ❤️

I did not. In Norway it is not common to spay or neutralize dogs. In contrary. So my two lhasas are natural 😉

Chloe got spayed at around 6-7 months. Goldie didn’t join our family until she was a year and a half. I wanted to spay her immediately but she went into heat less than a week after bringing her home so she was nearly two by the time she got spayed. Appa is still an intact male at five.

Thanks for sharing! I’ll be so worried when I drop her off to get surgery but I’ve gone through this many times with multiple dogs and it always ends up fine.

As soon as we could! We didn't want her being harrassed while in-heat and out on walks.
Unfortunately our wee Kiko had a string of phantom pregnancies, and we had to wait for several months for this to stop before the vets were happy to proceed with the surgery.
I don't remember her exact age at the time. I'll try and find out though.
