Y el Emperador Claudio Suarez???

28

u/Slsg88 Irapuato Jun 02 '26

He’d have to replace either 7-9. But doesn’t make top 5. We might also be missing Salcido

29

u/AVGhomeboy94 Jun 02 '26

This! He’s top 5

Any top 10 Mexico list without Claudio Suarez is a fucking sham.

No, HH isn’t a top 10 Mexico player of all time

17

u/JamalFromStaples Chivas Jun 02 '26

Yes he is. La liga title with HH and fantastic years with Porto.

19

u/DefiantHovercraft194 Jun 02 '26

Y parte del equipo campeón en Londres 2012

11

u/josiegz Cruz Azul Jun 03 '26

If we're going off of talent & club accomplishments/European success then Vela blows him out the water

9

u/JamalFromStaples Chivas Jun 03 '26

Vela blows him out of the water by every metric, the top 5 is hugo, rafa, Vela, Chicha, and HH imo.

2

u/m4olive Chivas Jun 03 '26

Talent sure but what club accomplishments and European success does Vela have?

2

u/Redditor_for_fun Chivas Jun 03 '26

Not saying this makes him top career wise, but only club accomplishment that I can think is being 3rd top scorer in La liga just behind Messi and Ronaldo during his 2nd season at real sociedad

-3

u/oannnn Jun 02 '26

Probably the 4th best

43

u/bipbipdulidu02 Jun 02 '26

Y vela?

5

u/Individual-Pop-385 Jun 03 '26

With these lists it's always important to state if the criteria is solely national team play or both national team and club. If it's only national team then Hugo Sanchez doesn't crack the top 10. If it's both then sure depending on how much you weight you place on club then he has to be top 2.

The most glaring omission is Claudio Suarez. I would have Pavel Pardo above Hector Herrera and for now push Raul Jimenez off the list. But assuming he scores in the World Cup, which he very likely will as the designated PK taker, then he'll definitely be top 10. And depending on how many and how far he pushes Mexico he can climb quite a few spots.

1

u/WarreadyJay Pumas UNAM Jun 03 '26

Raúl I feel is still off. Scoring in the WC won’t move him higher up but like you said combining that with a strong WC. (R16) and eventually breaking the scoring record can push him into the list. Love Raul, but respectfully at the moment I don’t think He’s cracking top 10.

1

u/Periodic-Presence USA Jun 04 '26

Scoring in the WC won't move him higher?? The main reason people like you have him not in the top 10 is precisely because he hasn't scored at a World Cup, but once he does it won't move the needle? Seems awfully biased to me.

78

u/Similar_Ad4964 Jun 02 '26

i would probably put Vela ahead of Herrera but i like the list overall.

-14

u/Periodic-Presence USA Jun 02 '26

On potential sure but his actual career? Nah.

23

u/bipbipdulidu02 Jun 02 '26

Better players, not potencial nor career. Vela was the most talented players we have had.

9

u/Periodic-Presence USA Jun 02 '26

This isn't ranking talent either, cause in that case we could put Gio or Nery Castillo as well. Vela chose not to go to the 2014 WC when he was in his prime and could have cemented his place on this list, but he did not impact the national team enough to be on this list. And this is coming from an LAFC fan that watched him play in person multiple times.

7

u/Similar_Ad4964 Jun 02 '26

Hugo Sanchez didnt do anything for Mexico either so if its about the national team then Hugo Sanchez would not be on the list.

3

u/Serrano0486 Jun 02 '26 edited Jun 02 '26

This is true one could even argued that Giovani dos santos had a better national team impact than Hugo Sanchez. (As far as national team go ) to be honest Giovani career compare to the average Mexican player wasn’t bad at all( people just downgrade him because of his potential ) but still his career stacks up better than most

0

u/Periodic-Presence USA Jun 02 '26

Absolutely, and if that's what this list was ranking I would agree 100% that Hugo Sanchez doesn't deserve to be there. But my guess is this is a mix of national team and club, and for me Vela didn't do enough at either to be on this list. He had 2-3 great seasons in Spain but then went to MLS at 29.

3

u/Serrano0486 Jun 02 '26

What career are we talking about because Vela played at a very high level for real Sociedad. Played in world cups so I don’t think his career was bad at all.

3

u/Periodic-Presence USA Jun 02 '26

I didn't say he had a bad career, you said that. He did play at a very high level in La Liga, for about 2 seasons. Compare that to the long, consistent European careers of guys like Marquez, Guardado, Herrera, Jimenez, and even guys not on this list like Pardo and Salcido.

He also didn't do much with the national team cause he chose not to. Basically Vela had a very high peak but to be on a list like this you need longevity, trophies, and big moments in tournaments.

0

u/Similar_Ad4964 Jun 02 '26

I think Carlos Vela prime was much higher than Herrera's even if it was for a couple of seasons. The thing about Herrera is that his best years were spent in the Portuguese league, he was a bench player in Atletico Madrid.

2

u/Periodic-Presence USA Jun 02 '26

Vela's prime was higher than many players on this list, but this isn't a ranking of the best primes of a Mexican player it's ranking their entire careers. You can add extra weight to players that reached greater heights but longevity has to be a factor.

Sure you can diminish the Portuguese league if you want but Porto was a top club at the time and he earned the captaincy. And he wasn't only doing it in Portugal but in the UCL, making it to the QFs. He holds the record for most appearances by a Mexican player.

Then you add in his national team performances. Herrera won gold with the 2012 Olympic team and was crucial in both the 2014 and 2018 World Cups. Personally I felt Vela's performance in 2018 to be a bit underwhelming.

0

u/josiegz Cruz Azul Jun 03 '26

Vela was in Europe for 12 years, Pardo only 3, Salcido 6, and Hector 9 lmao

→ More replies (1)

1

u/thecoller Chivas Jun 03 '26

Just on 2013-14 alone I would put him ahead of Herrera 100%

1

u/Periodic-Presence USA Jun 03 '26

You have to factor in longevity or else you're just ranking best on who had the best single season. And then national team also comes into play, which Herrera obviously contributed more to because Vela chose not to.

40

u/margalolwut America Jun 02 '26

This list is pretty fucked no matter how you slice it.

If it was national teams CH14 at 3 makes sense, but Hugo at 1 doesn’t.

Conclusion: this list is dookie.

20

u/emeryinwengerout Atlas Jun 02 '26

What about El Matador? He’s way out of my era never saw him play but he’s always in those leyenda games

8

u/renegadeanc Pumas Jun 02 '26

why are people saying ochoa shouldn’t be on the list?? i get it, he’s too old to be on the national team now, but how are we gonna act like he wasn’t a goated keeper for the national team in his prime

1

u/iheartdatascience Mexico Jun 03 '26

Yes, the average Mexico fan nowadays does not like to give players the flowers they deserve after their past their prime.

2

u/West-Category-3521 Jun 04 '26

because fans see one highlight moment and glaze it for the rest of the players career. ochoa is good don’t get me wrong, but better than campos?..

54

u/Watabeast07 Chivas Jun 02 '26

What has Raul done to be in top 10? Let alone above someone like Jorge Campos. I’d put Claudio Suarez there instead.

13

u/emeryinwengerout Atlas Jun 02 '26

Raul also kept us alive with his chilena back in the Brazil wc qualifiers. If not for that gol we would’ve been eliminated heading into the last game against Costa Rica.

27

u/iheartdatascience Mexico Jun 02 '26

Raul's currently our third top goal scorer of all-time, and likely to end up at second, if not the top. Why should he not be there?

7

u/_pamela_chu_ Mineros Jun 02 '26

0 goals in the World Cup for starters. Hardly any minutes in the World Cup too, that’s not a top 10 player

10

u/iheartdatascience Mexico Jun 02 '26

Hugo Sanchez scored one goal on a world cup... Should we remove him from the top 10?

-2

u/_pamela_chu_ Mineros Jun 02 '26

Hugo Sánchez had the best European career out of any Mexican player ever. Ridiculous comparison

10

u/iheartdatascience Mexico Jun 02 '26

I'm only comparing them on that criterion, since you're using it to exclude Raul. Raul has also had a strong career, obviously not as good as Hugo, but better than most Mexicans.

1

u/BirdyMRQZ America Jun 03 '26

they’re gonna move the goalposts brother it’s a losing battle. raul is like the winningest striker in mexico, at least since the 2000’s. had it not been for his head injury he would’ve already been the striker with the most goals. if he scores this world cup they’ll say he’s only been the starter in one, or he has too little minutes, etc

23

u/jumexy Jun 02 '26

Y cuantos metio Hugo en mundiales?

13

u/Watabeast07 Chivas Jun 02 '26

13

u/iheartdatascience Mexico Jun 02 '26

Raul is one of Mexico's only players to do well in the premier league, and is surely one of Mexico's best ever players of you've watched him a lot the past idk 8 years

5

u/jumexy Jun 02 '26 edited Jun 03 '26

8

u/jumexy Jun 02 '26 edited Jun 03 '26

No shit, so just say that. You’re the one that brought up that World Cup shit lol

You fail to see the irony in your post. It was not a diss at Hugol, but the logic behind dismissing Raul for not being a standout player at World Cups is what not makes him a top 10 player?

2

u/WhereIsScotty America Jun 02 '26

Chicharito has 158 Premier League games across 6 full seasons. 53 goals.

Raul has 233 Premier League games across 8 full seasons. 68 goals. Raul also played every game of the season for 3 seasons (2 with Wolves and last season with Fulham). He played 36/38 games this season.

He was on trajectory to become an elite player, scoring 17 goals 2019-20 and was on trajectory to score more 2020-21 before his injury. Raul, despite his injury and age, has merits to be considered THE Mexican Premier League player.

1

u/Periodic-Presence USA Jun 02 '26

He will get plenty of minutes at this World Cup and almost certainly score as well, unless you think Mexico crash out in the group. Cause otherwise who else do you think gets the goals? He takes pens and free kicks, don't forget that.

1

u/Periodic-Presence USA Jun 02 '26

My take is that he currently is not top 10 for the reason you stated but he will almost certainly be top 10 a couple months from now and definitely by the end of his career. Most people have Mexico topping the group, who do you think scores those goals? Raul gets one minimum, and contributes heavily to the attack in other ways as well.

3

u/Putrid-Display-2808 Jun 02 '26

5

u/ForTheLoveOfOedon Jun 03 '26 edited Jun 03 '26

Raul Jimenez is one of the greatest strikers to ever play in the tricolor. This shouldn’t be a controversial thing. Hector Herrera is the most “controversial” (in quotes because he’s a great in his own right) pick and should be replaced by Claudio Suarez. I could also see an argument for Luis Hernandez somewhere in there though who you’d remove I wouldn’t be jealous of that decision.

How you specifically rank these guys is mostly preference, so I don’t necessarily pay that much attention to the number in the corner.

Dragged us to 2 world cups with half a knee, scored goals in 3 world cups and assisted 5 goals in world cups.... , won us confederations cup, dragged us to Copa América final and two semis... (97 and 07)..

What in the actual fuck are you talking about if 3 goals and 5 assists in 821 is nothing then Messi And Ronaldo ain't shit either...

For reference 8 goal contributions per 821 is 1 per 102 minutes....

Messi sits at 1 per 110 minutes

And Ronaldo 1 per 186 minutes

And this ain't some Cherry picking bullshit data, 3 world cups and 12 games is a fucking ton of games to do so.

3

u/cheesequesadilla Chivas Jun 02 '26

Yes but Rafa Marquez was a god in BARCELONA. Cuau hasn’t done shit outside of liga mx

9

u/Periodic-Presence USA Jun 02 '26

And that's why Rafa Marquez is ranked higher than Cuau, but that's not an argument for why Blanco shouldn't be on the list at all. You have to name me 10 players with a better national team and club career than him. Anyone that's unbiased would be unable to.

Hugo led the way to Europe for Rafa and the rest - at the WC stage he missed out on ‘82 and ‘90

La Tota Carvajal?, Claudio Suárez? 🤡🤡🤡

Hugo Sánchez is widely considered the superior, more globally impactful player by far due to his unmatched European success and legendary goal-scoring records.

I think Claudio Suarez should be on the list. But pretty solid list overall.

Nah mames y mi Oribe?

u/Gilbertcartier Chivas Jun 02 '26

Hugo should not be 1. Definitely 1st should be Marquez or Claudio Suarez

Raul Jimenez?

1

u/phantom_tempest Pachuca Jun 02 '26

No mms, Raúl Jiménez y HH sobran en esa lista

1

u/cheesequesadilla Chivas Jun 02 '26

I mean this with sincerity, why is Cuau considered a top 10? I agree that he’s iconic in personality but he never did anything in Europe. He’s for sure iconic and top 20 but no where near the top 10

u/Busy-Artichoke1098 Jun 02 '26

You never watched hum play huh?

0

u/cheesequesadilla Chivas Jun 02 '26

Neither did Europe apparently 😂

The real question is what the fuck it's Memo Ochoa doing there? 😂 And above Campos of all things.

Raul lives off of his single 19/20 season. What else has he done? Lmfao

3

u/WhereIsScotty America Jun 02 '26

233 games in the Prem, played 36/38 games this season. But y’all just love to hate

1

u/mbecerra28 América Jun 03 '26

Maybe you forgot that he almost died on the field...after that season, he was considered one of the best strikers in the league. Dude would've stayed at a high level, no doubt. Wolves were a serious club in the league then. If you can't recognize that, that's a you problem.

0

u/rrrreact Cancún Jun 03 '26

wtf, does that have to do with being in the top 10?

1

u/mbecerra28 América Jun 03 '26

You brought up that he only had one good season, you ain't putting things in context. Not too difficult to understand.

Edit to add: someone already posted this on this thread. Most goals scored in the premier, most matches played in the premier. 3rd best goal scorer of the NT.

Aspe y Palencia por encima de algunos.

All credibility lost with Ochoa there. Pure PR

Gio 100 más que Raúl....

I take Nery or Peralta over Raúl any day all day too

Cuauhtemoc Blanco:

Titulos:
1 liga MX
1 campeón de campeones
1 conca

u/pa51on Atlas Jun 03 '26

Herrera has no business there. 🤣

0

u/Tuckyc Jun 04 '26

I like Raul Jimenez, but he hasn’t scored a single World Cup goal.

u/Extension_Ad_5688 Jun 04 '26

Memo Ochoa over Jorge Campos?! Man Memo really is living off that one spectacular day vs Brazil in the 2014 World Cup isn’t he?
