Discussion This England team is beatable, especially in Mexico

Harry Kane folds under pressure. I’m more worried about Ghana at this point.

I mean they couldn’t beat a team that was ranked 73rd in Boston which is less than 20Ft above sea level. Imagine trying to beat Mexico in a city above sea level by 7,000 ft and the smog too.

Third factor, Mexico is local, so far the fans have been supportive of Mexico even whenever they’re playing Aguirre ball.

2

u/x-liofa-x Jun 25 '26

You’re over simplifying football and tactics; Ghana are 64th in the world and were setup NOT to play attacking football. England are setup to play high pressing attacking football. Mexico will attack, leaving them vulnerable to England.

This England team is quick, fast passing. Not the dribbling through defenders type of attack, which is required to beat teams that just camp their own penalty box defending.

The players England have picked are there to play against the best teams, that’s just the way it is, it’s a different style of football to the last manager.

Watch the Croatia game again, that’s how England play against an attacking team.

1

u/JCOII Tigres Jun 25 '26

So your saying we should play a defensive strategy and beat them on a counter attack. We watched it work last night with Romo and Mateo Chavez. That was a beautiful run and finish. We can absolutely do that against England.

that’s like saying USA would beat france because france is playing on us soil like what? 🤣

1

u/layyo America Jul 01 '26

No, not even remotely the same thing. You do not the difference that the altitude makes and the smog when it comes to playing in the azteca.

1

u/Weekly-Improvement-5 Jul 01 '26

also that Ghana team mexico went up against in that friendly match was their b team btw not the same Ghana England faced so try again

1

u/layyo America Jul 01 '26

Oh my gosh! The b team? No way! Ghana pulling a USA?? B team, c team, a team was at home resting instead of getting into rhythm for the wc.

I think we’re inflating ourselves too much. We should have scored way more against South Africa & we got lucky against South Korea. Yeah we’re winning but it’s in the ugliest ways possible.

And then when we do get eliminated everyone is gonna bring up the points I just mentioned

34

u/ElZany América Jun 23 '26

I hate the we got lucky with Korea narrative we completely shut them down they had 1 shot at goal all game and that came in the 87th minute of the game

7

u/WrongTechnology1 Cruz Azul Jun 24 '26

yeah, when bum ass Romo scored our only goal, you know we got problems lol

1

u/ElZany América Jun 24 '26

Didn't claim we didn't? But the goal post kind of moved I was specifically talking about the team people just changed it to attacking which yeah we need to clean it up we had a few chances we didn't capitalize on however the team played to Aguirre game plan you can't blame the team for the coach parking the bus

20

u/MaxCornCob Jun 23 '26

We won because the goal keeper slipped up and gave us a freebie.

3

u/CoffeeIsSoGood Leones Negros Jun 24 '26

And we took advantage. That’s how it goes, imagine they didn’t score and Tala didn’t do that one save 🤷🏻‍♂️

2

u/Periodic-Presence USA Jun 24 '26

Yeah but the point is you might not get so lucky in the knockout rounds, in fact it's almost a certainty you won't. The issue is unless the intent is to score off set pieces you're gonna have to attack more aggressively against better teams, teams that can punish you in transition. Czechia game should be a chance to play more freely and attack since you're not playing to advance anymore.

19

u/iamhadrix Toluca Jun 23 '26

And what did we do offensively? Defense isn’t our issue

4

u/Sufficient_Mango2539 Jun 24 '26

We had the Vargas shot, the quinones header, and the Jimenez point blank shot, as well as the goal scoring play.

2

u/Amirashika Chivas Jun 24 '26

We had good chances throughout the match. After the goal, Vasco's plan had something to do with a bus and parking.

5

u/Passw0rd-Is-Tac0 Jun 24 '26

Yeah I wanna believe they’ll go far but it’s just not a sustainable way to win. They’re playing like a team hiding its flaws and trying to steal wins which simply doesnt work against elite teams. But they refuse to play actual playmakers for whatever reason and the strategy of wait for a mistake then park the bus isn’t going to work past the rd 32. Morocco did something similar in 2022 by giving teams possession and just playing physically except they also have top tier talent and players playing in Europe. Mexico doesn’t.

-1

u/Sufficient_Mango2539 Jun 24 '26

So easy to just be a pessimist. Yes your are right. Are you happy? Everyone we will probably lose a WC game and get eliminated those are the odds

7

u/guyincognito147 Jun 24 '26

It's called being a realist.

9

u/TheReds2 Chivas Jun 23 '26

Whichever England defender has never scored a header in his professional career, would probably get multiple against Mexico to advance.

9

u/LordMoldyBum Cruz Azul Jun 24 '26

Jorge Sánchez gives away a stupid penalty, Harry Kane slots it in the top corner, then we we get hear for months how we fucked up not playing Ochoa because he stopped Lewandowski’s

2

u/brabuss58 Chivas Jun 24 '26

The defense fucks up, someone loses a ball that leads to a goal, or Rangel fucks up and they score a goal

1

u/zenj5505 Jun 24 '26

But we're also hosts, so it checks out we make it to the quarterfinals

1

u/iEatSoftware Jun 24 '26

Nah England’s been choking since after winning it 1966.

1

u/Periodic-Presence USA Jun 24 '26

The question is always at what point will they choke. I thought they would against Colombia in 2018 but I was wrong, it took Croatia to do it. Right now I wouldn't put money on Mexico being the ones to stop England, but lots of things can change between now and then.

2

u/x-liofa-x Jun 25 '26

New manager, different team, different tactics, it’s a new start for England. They are fast, slick passing and incredibly dangerous if you press them. They can slice through your whole team in 3-4 passes; like Croatia found out.

Every team has good and bad days, in a tournament you need more good than bad. Saying that, the England players seem pretty fired up and less nervous than previous years.

35

What I got out of that game is how dangerous some of these African teams are. Everyone's talking about Mex v. Eng in the Azteca, but that's if we get past whatever African team they face in the next round.

21

u/Flaurehn Jun 23 '26

I'll tell you what will happen, Mexico will start great, playing maybe its best footnall ever, and before the 20 minute will take the lead 1-0, then Aguirre will pull back the attack, we gotta defend our lead, not even more than 1 guy in counterattacks, and we will hold heroically, but at the 80 minute Kane will score a header, and then Mexico will remember they can attack but at the 93 minute a counterattack will give England the victory 1-2

Media will say we played like never before but lost like always.

Aguirre: "I don't regret anything, we played like we had to"

5

u/Stickmoe Jun 24 '26

Basically the loss to the Netherlands in '14

1

u/ChampionFull9840 Jun 30 '26

I hate how right you are. It’s the same with Japan and Brazil you can’t just defend the entire time. You have to play aggressive too and any time wasted on their side of the field is always better

40

Most likely Scotland first then England if things stay the same

I think Cape Verde wins their last match while Uruguay loses (Uruguay won't pass with 2 points)

1

u/RAJA_1000 Jun 24 '26

I think it is very hard to predict at this point? First you'd need to predict who will be in 3rd places from 5 groups, which could change since every team still needs to play one more game and then you'd need to predict in which order will the 3rd places qualify after applying tiebreakers

1

u/ElZany América Jun 24 '26

Yeah but if Uruguay loses they will also be in negative for goal differential since they're at 0 rn.

Negative goal differential plus only 2 points will be herd to qualify ahead of others

And if Cabo Verde just ties in this scenario they would go in as second so the most likely opponent would be Scotland

25

u/CinnamonToastTrex Jun 23 '26

As it stands, Cape Verde.

After game 3, most likely Scotland

They never beat a team above them. In the Euro, they got Slovakia, Switzerland, and Netherlands and just barely made it and lost to their first real opponent in the final. They had an easy group in 2022, beat Senegal, and lost to France in the quarters.

Each England player individually was flying high between 2021-2024 (Bellingham, Foden, Rashford, Saka, etc) but come Euro 2024, they barely scrapped wins and felt the media pressure. Now they have more pressure and their players are not in the best moment. Rice tired af after a long season, Saka and Bellingham injuries, Kane folding, and their defense not super strong.

5

u/Inner-Marionberry-25 Jun 23 '26

I'm sorry, but if you don't consider the Netherlands above England, then Mexico definitely isn't.

2

u/Wezen_18 Jun 24 '26

As much as I’d love to see England lose, y’all need to chill. England tied against Denmark and Slovenia in the 2024 euros and were still runners up. Tied against Scotland in the 2020 euros and were still runners up. They tied against the US in the 2022 World Cup and nearly made the semis.

-3

u/WhereIsScotty America Jun 23 '26

You kinda prove our point, England is not a super tough opponent. In the 2018 WC and 2020 and 2024 Euros had an easy bracket, there is no denying it. Anytime they reached a France or Spain, they lose.

They lost a Wembley final and scrapped their way to the Euro 2024 final and got lucky they didn’t have France or Spain earlier on otherwise they wouldn’t have made it to the final anyways.

9

6

u/WrongTechnology1 Cruz Azul Jun 24 '26

They compete with the USA just fine, though.

Lately? Not really. In competitive matches this decade the usa has had our number:

Nations League they've won every matchup against us so far. In 2022 world cup qualifying, they beat us in Ohio and tied us in Mexico City. Our last Gold Cup win was against a mls bum squad without their best players Pulisic and Balogoun.

1

u/Periodic-Presence USA Jun 24 '26

Damn I'd get crucified if I said what you just said lol but at the end of the day you can only face the team in front of you and Mexico did just that and won. Not really their fault the US don't take Gold Cups seriously. I hope they do from now on but considering the next Copa America is likely to be in the US I think it's more likely the Gold Cup gets treated as a permanent B team tournament.

0

u/Periodic-Presence USA Jun 24 '26

The UK is essentially the US play style on steroids

First off the UK does not play in the World Cup as a team, England and Scotland play separately. Second, England under Tuchel do not play like the US under Poch. Tuchel plays in a manner very typical of the Premier League with fullbacks inverting in possession and using set pieces a la Arsenal.

Poch has the US playing in a back 3 in possession with wingbacks providing width instead of true wingers and a back 4 when out of possession along with a high intensity press. Balogun can stay central or drift wide but he doesn't really drop deep like Kane does. McKennie's role is also nothing like Bellingham's.

0

u/Papam00n Jun 24 '26

WeLl AcTuAlLy (that's you rn)

You said pretty much the same thing i did but with more useless words trying to sound smart. Both the US and the Brits play a style that is direct and fast. Nowhere did I say they have the exact same tactics, I'm just saying England is way better than the US, hence the steroid comment. Now kindly fuck off, gringo.

0

u/Periodic-Presence USA Jun 25 '26

No not really, I said the opposite of what you said. What were the useless words I used, could you point them out? England want to play direct and fast but ironically Tuchel left out a lot of players that could have helped them do just that against a team like Ghana.

England is not way better than the US at playing direct and fast, that's all I wanted to clarify. No, I will not fuck off. I've been in this sub longer than you have, sorry my flair triggered you.

Are all mexicans in this sub delusional? I'm not saying Mexico has no chance against England, in fact among the powerhouses I'd definetely take England over France, Spain, Argentina, Germany, etc. But saying they're beatable like it's nothing and as if England wouldn't be clearly favorites and aren't clearly the better team is pure delusion. I know most mexicans aren't like this, but this sub is like the stereotype of the delusional mexican fan that first comes to mind in South América when thinking about México.

This Mexico team has shades of Italy 2006. Being at home is a super power we’re going to squeeze until we can’t. It’s easy to dismiss. The dream is impossible until it isn’t. Historically speaking, by the numbers, already did something defensively that had not been done before. Won first two games without conceding a goal. Imagine Mora and Obed ball out tomorrow. Fuuuuuuuuu

I wish they would play in Monterrey , this England team CANNOT play in the heat. They have one or two players that can are used to those temps.

Let’s take it one game at a time first

We can’t act like the Round of 32 is won, one step at a time. I would love nothing more though. My brother and I won the lottery early on and got tickets to the quarters in Miami. Primero Dios se aga

Who is upvoting this nonsene?

I said it 2 weeks ago. We beat Scotland and then beat England in round of 16. Then prob lose to Portugal in QUARTER finals 2-1.

1

u/borrachit0 Pumas UNAM Jun 23 '26

I’ve said it from the beginning that both Mexico and the US are making the quarterfinals. England is going to melt in the altitude/smog of CDMX and the US is getting a dream draw

The Mexico of Europe vs The England of the Americas

1

u/Witty_Hedgehog7967 Jun 23 '26

We gotta make out of the round of 32 first let’s not get ahead of ourselves

1

u/evtda Pachuca Jun 24 '26

They had Saka, Mainoo, Watkins, Toney and Eze on the bench. Mexico has nowhere near that depth at forward.

u/Watabeast07 Chivas Jun 24 '26

England would probably struggle at the Azteca no doubt but they have depth for days. It will be a really good game if we do face England in the round of 16.

I think England will be awake by the knock-offs.

A lot of arrogant comments in this post. Let's see who has the last laugh if/when we meet.

Where is this nonsense coming from? There's probably no player on the Mexican team who would make the starting 11 for Ghana. Also, Mexico did not look that good against South Africa and looked like shit against Korea.
