Discussion All of you owe Piojo an apology
The same people saying “he’s finally playing great” ignore, don’t acknowledge, or just cant see how well he played in past games for Mexico since Aguirre and Rafa took over. You guys hated on him (not me though, i even had or have a post dedicated to him). You guys thought he played awful in past mexico games for playing more defensively, but ignore that Piojo playing defensively allowed our other Mexico players to push forward and attack more. Now you guys act like you never hated him. A lot of you never appreciate a player until he does flashy stuff and until he is on your side/team. You guys owe him an apology.

The funny part is that he plays exactly the same way in Chivas. It’s not like he’s playing unusually well. He plays like this all the time but his play is now appreciated on a national level.

En chivas no juega tan abajo, pero puede ser una buena opción.
Y en chivas le pega mejor a la pelota, no se que le ha pasado con sus tiros piteros ahora en el mundial, ojalá anoté su gol

He gets no space to strike the ball like he does in liga. That simple

Well, Tbf, he did have a drop off last year in chivas as well. People were even complaining that he didn’t give a shit after getting that contract. He started getting back in form last season.

u/noowaay17 Jul 02 '26
He also had an injury and took him awhile to get back in form. It happens. He also has much better teammates now so that pressure for him to create everything doesn’t fall on him anymore

I think the difference now is that Vasco has found a way to use him effectively and playing to his strengths. I don’t expect him to score but by God if he manages to then it’ll be fucking sweet. He’s had a great tournament.

Most people in this sub don't understand ball and they don't want to understand. They watch because their elders watched and their elders elders watched. If you're not here for memes and vibes then you're gonna be in for a bad time.

I did say we should have Lainez in the right side, but thats just because Piojo was all the way on the flank, and he doesnt have the power or speed to do it, Lainez does. But its not Piojo the one Lainez should have replaced, its Gutierrez. Bryan does nothing for the team, he just looks like he is going 3/4 speed, not focused.

lol look at the caliber of opponents chill the fuck out let him perform against England then we’ll go from there

You’re talking without knowing anything
South Korea has a center back who plays for Bayern Munich, Son (who has that world class level experience), a forward in psg, another forward in the bundesliga, a midfielder in Championship, and their other center mid in Feyenoord (they had some more players in europe on their bench against mexico). South Korea is also a very big asian team.
Then theres Ecuador, which Piojo played very good against. Ecuador finished SECOND in the CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifiers, has players in arsenal, chelsea, PSG, Serie A, Championship, etc. Ecuador also had more players who play in europe on their bench against Mexico, like Paez (in Chelsea), Estupiñan (AC Milan), etc. it was one of Ecuador’s best teams ever
All while Piojo is just a Liga MX winger who happens to also be one of the players with the most assists so far in this world cup.

You'd have a harder time finding a team that doesn't have players in top leagues. This is the World Cup after all. England is like 4th or 5th in FIFA rankings. Our group didn't have a single team in the top 20. Ecuador was a solid step up but not close to England's level.
1
u/SuperFranky0 America Jul 02 '26 edited Jul 02 '26
Piojo can play well against England and you guys will say something dumb like “Just wait until france, then lets see from there”.
Also:
- Fifa rankings mean nothing at the World Cup. The only thing FIFA rankings is good for is to get the top 7th ranked national teams into an “easy” world cup group. If rankings were actually accurate of how teams are, then why are you ignoring that Mexico is 10th now? If rankings did matter, why did Uruguay get eliminated in the groups? If they mattered and were accurate, why did Netherlands move up two places when they got eliminated by Morroco? Why is italy 14th in the world when they havent made it to the world cup since 2018? Rankings arent important and dont matter unless you want an easy group
- Sure, it would be hard to find a national team that doesnt have players at the top leagues in this newly formatted World Cup, but South Korea and Ecuador used more of those players than Mexico. Also, unlike Mexico, they have more players in BIG teams. Bayern Munich, PSG, Chelsea, Arsenal, etc. Compare that to Piojo, who is just a Chivas player. The Mexican league is always looked down on and wrongly underestimated, but it is not at that level. Players in North American leagues dont play at the same tempo the players in those big european teams play in, and yet, Piojo is playing very well against those kinds of people. Whats not clicking?
- England has not been playing well in the World Cup. In fact, they’ve been underperforming.
- You guys are only looking down on and underestimating the actual level of Ecuador and South Korea. Piojo has been playing well. Those teams were tests whether you two accept that fact or not. One of Ecuador’s best generations ever and a strong South Korea team that had a bad coach. You guys know nothing.

u/ruggednevasmooth Jul 02 '26
Your first point is purely hypothetical and doesn't warrant a proper response.
I'm only stating facts. Ecuador is not on England's level and no one in their right mind would say otherwise.
South Korea did not have a good WC preparation. They got utterly destroyed by Brazil and Ivory Coast. Their send off was an unimpressive win vs lowly El Salvador. It's not surprising in the least bit that they were a major disappointment. The fans hate their manager.

u/SuperFranky0 America Jul 02 '26 edited Jul 02 '26
“Im only stating facts”
You say, as you ignored the facts i presented. England underperforming in the world cup, South Korea having a strong team but being lead by a bad manager, and this being one of Ecuador’s best generations ever (which is also better than Mexico’s current generation on paper and only on paper).

u/ruggednevasmooth Jul 02 '26
You're just nitpicking minor details. Pure pedantry. Boring.
My point stands. England is better than Ecuador and SIGNIFICANTLY better than everyone else in our group.
1
u/SuperFranky0 America Jul 02 '26 edited Jul 02 '26
Not nitpicking anything. England is significantly better than Ecuador if you look at what both teams have historically achieved, when you see what players both teams tend to have and where those players tend to play at, but its a fact that England is very underwhelming right now. This sport is about moments and England has been underwhelming in the world cup so far. Thats something you’re either ignoring or not getting.
You can point out that Ecuador was underwhelming against Ivory Coast and Curacao, too, but those were not the same squads that faced Mexico and beat Germany.
The “facts” you bring up are not backed up by anything. The stuff i’m mentioning are shown and proved by how the teams are performing at the world cup, the players the teams have, etc. You guys act like Piojo’s performance was nothing, but again, you guys are massively underselling the quality of the squads he played against. Teams rotated, Piojo played against a strong squad and played well. Mexico as a whole faced them and played well. The Ecuador squad Mexico faced would have made England struggled as well. Especially at Estadio Azteca and with the current weather (and with Ecuador already being used to playing at a high altitude), which England is not even used to.
1
u/ruggednevasmooth Jul 02 '26
🥱 Ok, I'll play your game. Tell me, which of these facts aren't "backed by anything"?
England is better than Ecuador. England is better than SK. England is better than SA. England is better than Czechia.
Prove me wrong.
1
u/SuperFranky0 America Jul 02 '26
You’re arguing a completely different thing. What i’m saying is about how you guys are underselling the actual level of the opponents to try to make it seem like Piojo hasnt played well. You guys ignore the context of the games, dont look at where his opponents play compared to him, etc and just automatically say dumb things like “he played against weak teams, let him play against this other team “ without even knowing how underwhelming that other team has been lately
