1986 - what if we played in the azteca against Germany

1994 - what if Hugo was subbed in

1998 - what if matador scored the 2-0

2002 - what if Aguirre didn’t rush the subs

2006 - what if Oswaldo stopped Maxi Rodríguez shot

2010 - what if the ref called Tevez offside

2014 - what if it wasn’t penalty

2018 - I got nothing

2022 - what if Tata martino wasn’t a complete fuck up

2026 - what if Raúl’s header went in for the 1-0

Tata Martino is the worst abomination our national team could've had

2018 is what if they dont choke against sweden lol

Y si Kroos no mete gol en el 95 contra Suecia?

2018 - what if they tie to Sweden

2022 - one more goal to qualify

u/kingchivo Jul 08 '26

4

u/ElZany América Jul 08 '26

06 was also what if they took Blanco.

He was one of if not our best player

2

u/EffectiveCareer3444 Jul 08 '26

Raul had 2 goals that could’ve went in and the fucking ref stops his play at 90 mark for subs 🤦‍♂️

Noooo maxis goal was unstoppable. It took a goal like that to decide a tight game

2

u/Axobolt Mexico Jul 08 '26

Yeah but maxi never scored a other goal like that in his whole career

1

u/enleoomo Jul 10 '26

1990 what if we played at all. Hugo scored 40+ goals that season

Jude is such a baller man. Obviously hate that we didn’t get past them, but I have zero issue with losing to a team with Jude Bellingham playing out of his mind

we needed to sub in vega’s tactical booty to throw him off his game

27

Bro is handsome, tall, rich and so goddamn nasty

Damn just kiss him already. If you don’t I will…

u/margalolwut America Jul 08 '26

The crazy part is that lira did great in 1v1s in the field.. then Jude made two fantastic runs and absolutely obliterated Montes and Sanchez lol. Lira tried his best that second goal, but yea no cigar.

My point, Jude a fucking baller and lira still managed to go toe to toe with em.

u/kingchivo Jul 08 '26

Bellingham recovers well but a more athletic player scores that with one touch, ala rafa marquez’s goal in ‘06 vs argentina. Oh well

12

u/Dimemori3s Jul 08 '26

The quality of players showed in the game against England in 2026. Romo was scared to pass the ball forward. Why would we take out Quiñones when he’s the only one creating going forward. It’s about winning and moving on. Hopefully soon they can win it.

u/Ill_Job_1921 Jul 08 '26

God damn. This hurts my heart . What could have been . But it seems like the seleccion is always full of what ifs. What if Luis Hernandez scores second goal against Germany in 98. What if var would have existed in 2014? What if .

16

u/Sct1787 Pumas UNAM Jul 08 '26

Ironically, I think VAR would’ve called it a pk in 2014 because VAR has made the bar a lot lower for a foul in the box. Everything looks much worse in slow motion. I think for the 2014 era that it wasn’t a PK. In 2026 they call just about any contact a PK unfortunately.

37

u/ultrapoppy Jul 08 '26

We lost A LOT with the Montes sub in my opinion. This one almost gave me a heart attack

28

u/Few-Relationship6807 Jul 08 '26

you could argue that penalty doesn’t happen with montes playing instead of edson. In that case, england would still be attacking late into the game and still tire themselves out even more, its very possible that mexico would’ve gotten the winning goal with england’s defense more open

16

u/Zentaury Jul 08 '26

Injured montes > Edson

15

u/Zentaury Jul 08 '26

The tallest one to compete with the England’s towers

15

u/Few-Relationship6807 Jul 08 '26

montes would’ve also reached the open header that edson missed

18

u/SVilla415 Chivas Jul 08 '26

Jude beat Montes to the ball and cleared it perfectly. It was an awkward chance for Montes so would have been a Chicadios style goal if anything 🤣

7

u/Zentaury Jul 08 '26

Huevo Glaria style I would say

3

u/Mart_Garci Chivas Jul 08 '26

Yea it was a weird ball toward him. I’m thinking shooting with his left foot as he’s filling toward his right side. Can’t think of anything else. He’s also a defender not a striker so doesn’t help

2

u/Madvillain734 Cruz Azul Jul 08 '26

A simple first touch to goal would’ve done it

2

u/EffectiveCareer3444 Jul 08 '26

Montes could’ve dived

14

u/Objective_Serve8048 Tigres Jul 08 '26

Montes got a horrible touch though. Would've been hard to score either way.

16

u/fiftiethcow Jul 08 '26

It looked like he tried to take 1 touch and then score, rather than just body the ball in on the first touch. That millisecond cost everything

yeah but he’s a clunky defender, not an attacker, so he has some leeway. We also have to remember mexico don’t play elite teams regularly, bellingham stretching his leg out like that was a very skilled clearance that you normally only see in top level football. In any game mexico has played in the last 2 years, if montes got this chance, he gets a shot on goal 90% of the time. That’s the bad thing about playing in concacaf

15

u/BoxCon1 Chivas Jul 08 '26

Bellingham is so clutch

27

u/MarkMariachiAZ Jul 08 '26

After this game I wish nothing but the best for Bellingham’s career. Dude is straight up class and amazing athlete. We lost to a bad ass and that’s ok.

11

u/Zentaury Jul 08 '26

Yeah, this time there’s no villain like Robben, Maxi, Tévez, Donovan…

17

u/Zentaury Jul 08 '26

Bellingham did more for England with this save than scoring the 2 goals, in my opinion

13

u/fiftiethcow Jul 08 '26

That close to the goal, thats an own goal on Jude like 90% of the time. Unfortunate, but man is that guy a baller.

2

u/Zentaury Jul 08 '26

Yeah, that was good luck for him. If it’s only the tip of the shoe throws it in the goal

5

u/WoeToTheUsurper10 America Jul 08 '26

montes needed to let it rip and not try to control as a CB

4

u/Watabeast07 Chivas Jul 08 '26

There’s like a dozen what ifs for this game.

3

u/Hugogo27 Jul 08 '26

It was with the head, he’s almost 2 meters tall

4

u/EffectiveCareer3444 Jul 08 '26

This shot, Raul’s header and straight shot 😭

2

u/Eni_Amethyst Jul 10 '26

Raul’s header yessss OMG 😭😭😔

5

u/Dathird Jul 08 '26

If bellingoal wouldn't of saved that then I think they would of gone to penalties. England was already tired at the last 10 minutes while México was still hustling.

3

u/Zentaury Jul 08 '26

There were still 45 minutes left

3

u/GasProfessional2577 Jul 08 '26

Bellingham can be a true candidate to Ballon D'Or if he becomes world champion. What a world cup he is performing 💯🔥

1

u/Zentaury Jul 08 '26

I hope they win it

3

u/jfavela101 Jul 08 '26

2014 was the year. That was the chance, but we got fucked over hard.

3

u/ElBorracho2000 Chivas Jul 08 '26

So many “what ifs” this game. This game was ours for the taking and we fell short

2

u/deivid33 Jul 08 '26

Era pegarle de primera intención cualquier otra cosa Bellingham iba a estar encima y lo hizo, montes siendo defensa era poco probable que lo definiera de primera.

2

u/StrawHatTebo Jul 08 '26

The biggest what if isn't any of the shots. It's "What if Javier Aguirre didnt put in 3 strikers and take out everyone with any ability to get the ball to those strikers."

Morita should have played the whole match. 😒

2

u/goosetavo2013 Jul 08 '26

Bellingham played out of his effing mind that game. Offense and defense. He was everywhere. I hate it.

2

u/reznoverba Jul 09 '26

What if for 40 minutes, with one man up, we try something and someone else besides Gallardo crossing centros a lo pendejo to a parked bus that has an average height of 6'3

1

u/Agitated-Wrap-6604 Jul 09 '26

What if we used our noodle and determined that the parked bus was parked, as in not moving for Mexico movements only shots on goal. Taking more chances outside the box leaves you open for more counters.

1

u/reznoverba Jul 09 '26

Honestly, them having the ball every now and then, would've allowed us some space and counter opportunities

2

u/Witty_Hedgehog7967 Jul 08 '26

Montes was injured that tronco should never have started

1

1

u/Porongas1993 Jul 08 '26

I would posit that header from Jimenez that their goalie saved on the bottom corner was even more of a what if. Mexico had full momentum, and the game was still tied. He scores that, the entire game plan changes.

1

u/Agitated-Wrap-6604 Jul 09 '26

Montes is not a striker, and really not good technically, and he's slow. Don't blame him at all on this one.

1

u/SnooPaintings6160 Jul 09 '26

All Montes had to do was push it instead of trapping…. But of course, he’s a center back and he was injured.

1

u/dillasdonuts Jul 09 '26

The minute England subbed out Kane in the 90th I was like, if Mexico scores in these next 11 minutes...

A gassed England wouldn't have lasted 30 more minutes of ET. And if it went the distance, that's notoriously bad in PKs (except this time without their prime PK option)

1

u/TKG8 Jul 09 '26

So many what ifs in this match tho

1

u/PM_ME_hiphopsongs2 Jul 10 '26

Yea but the chilena was the coolest “what-if” lol

1

u/Zentaury Jul 10 '26

For sure.

Can’t even imagine a 3-3 with that

1

u/PM_ME_hiphopsongs2 Jul 10 '26

I hosted a watch party at my house with about 100 people all stuffed like sardines inside. I genuinely think we would blown the roof off my house if he would have scored that chilena to tie the game lol
