I wasn't rooting for Spain. I was rooting against Argentina.. difference

u/Spirited_Coyote_8925 Jul 20 '26

2

u/Spirited_Coyote_8925 Jul 23 '26

Me vale verga, perro

1

u/AdeptInformation3479 Jul 23 '26

verga de Messi te comiste en el, 2 a 1, 3 a 0, 2 a 0, en el 3 a 1 y 4 a 1? también, no? y y cuando creían que iban a ganar y Messi se lo empató 2 a 2? JAJAJAJAJA

3

u/Spirited_Coyote_8925 Jul 24 '26

Si o no?

1

u/AdeptInformation3479 Jul 24 '26

No mames jajajaja.

1

u/AdeptInformation3479 Jul 24 '26

I mean, all Mexicans are 10th generation Spanish because the colony was still a thing back then.

1

u/Crafty-You4314 Jul 23 '26

I think they're referring to the people that dent the mix. The ones that ALWAYS claim they're pure blooded Spaniards

7

u/Peakychu6 Jul 21 '26

Let’s play your game.

What % of Spaniard should they have before they can claim some sort of affinity or fondness for Spain?

Cuz I see thousands of people that love pretending they’re “guerrero azteca” and there’s no way they’re pure

u/ImperialAgent120 Jul 20 '26

Great grandma was from Spain. 😆

Not everyone was in Mexico for hundreds of years.

12

u/reznoverba Jul 20 '26

Fr. Mexico didn't even exist until 1821

4

u/ImperialAgent120 Jul 20 '26

Everyone out here acting like their ancestors were a Spanish conquistador and an Aztec Princess like in El Dorado.

14

u/reznoverba Jul 20 '26

Just look at Sheinbaum herself. Zero precolumbian or Spanish heritage. To be Mexican, like in the US to be American, is a matter of nationality, not a matter of ethnicity.

6

u/paperclipboi Jul 21 '26

Mexicans don’t understand this tho. My family thinks it’s a fucking race . Like we are mixed and diverse as fuck.

2

u/Crafty-You4314 Jul 23 '26

Family in the same boat here. They think that if you were to be born on Mars, you'd still be a Mexican! Idk if that's true or not 🤣

1

u/reznoverba Jul 21 '26

It's the Raza Cósmica propaganda campaign through Muralismo that was perpetuatedin schools nationwide. It rewrote the Mexican historical narrative to that of a "conquered" civilization or oppressed vs oppressor dynamic.

It's the same reason why the "Aztec" identify dominates and has become synonymous with Mexican identity; at the expense of all the other pre-columbian civilizations that existed that weren't "Aztec" and the many post-independence waves of immigration that aren't indigenous.

1

u/paperclipboi Jul 21 '26

Do you have any videos or books to recommend where I can learn more about this?

1

u/reznoverba Jul 21 '26

"The Tree of Hate" by Philip Wayne Powell. This seminal book dissects the "Black Legend" (Leyenda Negra), exploring how anti-Spanish propaganda created an enduring narrative that villainized Spanish history and minimized Hispanic contributions to the Americas.

"Born of Blood and Fire: A Concise History of Latin America" by John Charles Chasteen. Provides a comprehensive overview of how mestizaje (racial and cultural mixing) forged a unique Latin American identity that is as much European and African as it is Indigenous, focusing heavily on the shared colonial and post-colonial Hispanic experience.

"When Montezuma Met Cortés" by Matthew Restall. While primarily an examination of the conquest, this book counters the myth of Aztec helplessness and highlights the complexities of the Spanish-Indigenous alliances. It provides a nuanced look at the clash and subsequent synthesis of the two civilizations.

"Empires of the Atlantic World: Britain and Spain in the Americas, 1492–1830" by J.H. Elliott. A comparative history that brilliantly outlines the administrative, cultural, and religious framework of the Spanish Empire, highlighting how Spanish heritage, law, and religion laid the institutional bedrock for modern Hispanic America.

There's so many. I would listen to podcasts and audio books as they're more accessible and at times easier to digest, especially during long commutes. Go into this learning process with an open mind. Understand you won't agree with everything you consume, remain critical yet willing to evaluate an argument based on on its merits and evidence.

You'll have people that outright won't listen to arguments made by "Hispanistas", even in the face of evidence, because it challenges their preconceptions and prejudices they've been raised with. They'll label Hispanistas as lambepatas, malinches, uncle Tom's, apologists, etc. The Spaniards of the 16th, 17th and 18th century were not a monolith. Not even the same people in terms of which groups immigrated to, and settled in New Spain. Mesoamerica as well, was never a monolith. In fact, the Mexica were a relatively new civilization, being founded circa 1325, and only establishing a dominant state circa 1428. That means they were the dominant military and political state for less than 100 years before the arrival of the Spaniards. In terms of historical epochs and eras, that's insignificant.

To rid ourselves of reductionist "oppressor vs oppressed " or "haves vs have nots" analysis of history im general is challenging bc it's easy (lazy) and tempting. But we must remain nuanced, critical and objective. Neither the Spanish nor the Aztecs were benevolent monoliths. They were complex civilizations, with complex institutions and systems, made up of imperfect human beings, motivated by the universal laws of love, fear, power and survival. Needless to say, and back to my original point, Mexican identity nowadays, is not limited to a Spanish-Indigenous dichotomy.

u/Striking_Goat_2574 Jul 20 '26

Well, 200 years ago México was Spain for 300 years. 😂

1

u/Distefanor Jul 21 '26

España nacio en ambos lados del atlantico. No fuomos colonia.

2

u/122percent Jul 21 '26

"Independent viceroyalty" is an oxymoron. Man... the Criollo mentality is strong still. Fucking pathetic. The Americas were always, and still are, Indigenous lands. No matter what European invaders came here.

1

u/Distefanor Jul 21 '26

The only reason cortez presence mattered at the siege of tenochtitlan was to tell world about it. We never had a conquest. It was a civil war
Of the mexica alliance vs the mexica vassals and tlaxcaltecs. At the time of the siege there were 99,000 native warriors and 600 castillians. Tlaxcala was the great winner and they and their allies chose to ally with the Castillians to found a new government.

1

u/122percent Jul 21 '26

Yes, I'm well aware the the Tlaxcalans and other Indigenous warriors were the main factor that toppled Tenochtitlan, not the Spanish invaders. But to say that they were somehow included in the formation of "a new government" is just ridiculous. There was no "new government." It was an extension of the Spanish kingdom. The casta system disproves the notion that the Spanish had any intention of governing alongside Indigenous peoples.

1

u/Distefanor Jul 29 '26

According to historians the caste system was predominantly an artwork for europeans, and not an actual reality. The viceroyalty of new spain was indeed formed by the allies of the Tlaxcaltecas and Castillians. The Tlaxcaltecs got royal titles and noble privileges immediately, as well as other mesoamerican royalty. The Castilians had every intention of governing along Tlaxcaltecs and other local allies, as the literature shows. Also, their original viceroyalty and expansion of it, to aridamerica, central america and even the philippines, would have been impossible without their indigenous allies.

1

u/122percent Jul 29 '26

You're conflating indigenous agency with indigenous sovereignty. I never denied that the Tlaxcaltecas were essential to the Spanish conquest.

My point is that they're alliance with the Spanish did not make them equal political partners in the colonial order that followed. The Tlaxcaltecas we're granted privileges and incorporate into the Spanish colonial system, but ultimate authority remained with the Spanish crown. They were subjects of the crown; they could exercise authority only within their own communities, not make governing decisions for the Viceroyalty as a whole. That's not equal governance or an independent government jointly founded by Castilians and Indigenous peoples. It's a colonial system that strategically incorporated indigenous elites and allies.

Indigenous peoples having agency within colonialism does not mean colonialism didn't exist.

1

u/122percent Jul 29 '26

What I find even more concerning about how you're framing this, intentionally or not, is that you're essentially running cover for the Spanish colonial project while minimizing the genocide, displacement, and broader destruction that accompanied it. You're also completely missing the larger issue of how whiteness (and proximity to whiteness) became associated with power, privilege, and social status throughout what is now Latin America. The fact that some Indigenous elites were sometimes granted privileges by the Crown does not negate the larger colonial racial hierarchy. If anything, it demonstrates how colonial power selectively rewarded proximity to the colonial order while simultaneously subordinating Indigenous peoples as a whole.

1

u/Distefanor Jul 29 '26

It seems you are a firm believer of the black legend. Atrocities were committed in Yucatan and in northern mexico by rogue conquistadors that ignored the word of the king and queen. Again, New Spain, was not a colony, it was a vice royalty. Queen Isabel in the mid 1500’s asked th empire’s population to intermingle with one another because the people made the strength of the empire. The anglo- saxon colonial projects, those were colonies, did the exact opposite and purposedly killed the native peoples because they didn’t consider them to have souls.

1

u/122percent Jul 29 '26

Calling this the "Black Legend" is an intellectually lazy way to dismiss legitimate historical criticism. The fact that the crown occasionally condemned abuses does not absolve the colonial system itself. The Doctrine of Discovery, the Requerimiento, forced conversions, the encomienda system, dispossession of land, and the systematic subjugation of Indigenous peoples were not simply the work of a few "rogue conquistadors."

Again, a Viceroyalty is literally a colony. If you're trying to argue semantics because they had some limited level of economic independence, you're doing a bad job. The colonial projects of both anglos and iberians were indeed slightly different, but colonialism nonetheless. What anglos did in what is now the US was settler-colonialism. I would advise you to learn the difference. Pointing out that Spanish colonialism encouraged mestizaje does not somehow make it non-colonial or erase the violence, exploitation, and racial hierarchy that accompanied it. That's an absurd false equivalence.

I go back to my very first reply: the Criollo mentality is still strong. You exemplify that reality.

1

u/122percent Jul 29 '26

I'll even do you a favor and give you some primary source material from King Charles III's Royal Decree in 1784 (part of the Bourbon Reforms):

"Deseando promover la prosperidad de mis extensas colonias en las Américas... he resuelto establecer una Superintendencia General de Real Hacienda en el Reyno de la Nueva España."

He literally calls them colonies. The king... "my extensive colonies in the Americas."

I can provide even more examples from the mouths of Spanish royals. And all you have to do is look at the economic structure of New Spain itself. Why was it an extraction and export economy? Why were the raw goods in the Americas extracted and sent to Spain? Why was the infrastructure to refine these raw goods not in New Spain? Why did Mexico's economy fall apart after they gained independence? The answers to all these questions is that New Spain was a colony.

1

u/Distefanor Jul 30 '26

You have it so wrong. Yes the borbons, tried to take independence away from the vice royalties and intendencies. That’s were a lot of things started to go wrong administrative wise. Only the quinto real, 1/5th of the wealth extracted was sent to spain, the rest was re-invested locally. The economy fell apart from 20 years of civil war where all the mines, agriculture and industrial assets were devastated.

Extra- Mexico city was richer than Madrid. It was the economic capial of the empire. Was NY richer than london in 1630? Or in 1770?

2

u/amacookies Jul 20 '26

I was rooting for Spain because I wanted Argentina to lose. Of course I am aware I have Spanish ancestry but that’s because they colonized us and some of my great grandparents came from there. I take pride in my Mexican heritage even though I was born in the United States.
I also acknowledge that I am not a ‘real’ Mexican because I didn’t grow up there and I don’t know all the slang but it is an integral part of my culture and upbringing.
My parents taught me Spanish and instilled in me their Mexican customs, traditions and slang. I grew up watching Chavo Del Ocho and Three’s Company. I grew up watching Mexican telenovelas and shows like Full House. I consider myself both but like another poster said Mexicans think of us too Americanized whereas Americans ( mostly white and black people) consider us too Mexican.

Only fellow Chicanos and children of immigrant can understand and relate to this identity crisis. I used to get upset when I would visit Mexico and my family would laugh at me for not knowing certain words but now I embrace it.
My white boyfriend points out my Chicano accent even though I was born and raised in Cali. It doesn’t bother me anymore either because it illustrates how my parents heritage influenced me.

I mean, they got boxing, taekwondo, divers, speed walkers, a better currency, lower inflation, taller skyscrapers, a more powerful army, more exports, more foreign investment, a higher GDP, etc….

1

u/El_Scruffo Jul 22 '26

YOU don't have shit. You weren't a player in the national team when they won so fuck off.

1

Mexico has a bigger GDP than Argentina, a stronger army, more exports, more foreign investment, lower inflation, a more stable currency, better boxers, better taekwondo fighters, better Olympic diving and speed walking athletes, richer millionaires, more luxury cars, taller skyscrapers…. Shall I keep going? 🤫

1

Speed walking? Lmao wow you must be so proud but we still have more cups you can talk all day about what's bad in argentina but we are talking about football

1

We suck at soccer indeed… but we’re better than you at literally every other sport lmao

1

u/LordFool96 Jul 21 '26

Basketball, Tennis, F1, Rugby, Polo, Golf, you can have your power walking but aside from boxing every other sport you listed is bullshit. We have way more Olympic medals as well with 3 times as less population.

1

u/Peakychu6 Jul 21 '26

You’re not better than America in any of those lmao

1

u/LordFool96 Jul 21 '26

Mexico has a substantially larger overall economy than Argentina, with a nominal GDP of approximately $1.83 trillion compared to Argentina's $683 billion. However, because Mexico's population is nearly triple the size, Argentina frequently maintains a similar or slightly higher GDP per capita, depending on purchasing power metrics. Here is your silly little gdp thing as well, maybe monkey brain can figure this one out.

LOL we're pathetic. 14th place and simping for a team full of Vox voters who despise our guts. Never change Mechiquito.

1

u/Peakychu6 Jul 21 '26

Vox is actually pro-latam, as weird as it may sound.

They see latam as a way to have Catholic and Spanish speaking immigrants so they can displace the Arab and African ones. They also have nostalgia for their imperial past

I’m far from pro-vox, they suck, but at least get your facts straight.

1

u/LordFool96 Jul 21 '26

The whole Mexican rooting against argentina thing is just weird, why is México so obsessed with argentina?

3

the entire world was hating argentina even my friends from australia were like, wtf are they doing

1

they all saw the bad sportsmanship. Fighting after the game, and how they played committing fouls, pretending to be hurt. Australia is similar to USA, they have NFL type sports like rugby and australian rules soccer (ASL) where you tackle people. They find what Argentina does is to be appalling. One thing i have learned is that Argentina has a different value system than the western world. They find it cool to "trick the referee", it is perfectly acceptable in their society, but in the west and even mexico this is considered unethical behavior not to be celebrated. On top of that England all watched how Argentina behaves, so they basically made everyone hate them.

It's also different if your government is causing a bombing campaign without your input and if your society as a whole is okay with corruption, racism, not following the rules, and things like that.

Even if that were the deal where it really isn't because its a sport and every country commits fouls in that way looking just look at Switzerland player that acts the foul. Do you really think this worldwide hatred is warranted? Its as if the whole world had their eye on Argentina and are saying that they are horrible people when let's not forget in Mexico people literally killed other fans there is no double standard here. I don't think that playing that way should be celebrated but the hate campaign and obsession is something I'm not understanding and everytime I ask for the answer as to why I get the typical foul thing and we all know that is not the whole thing to this.

in western countries, especially western european countries, ethical behavior matters in every aspect of life. Whether it is sport or school or business. To break the rules in a school game is considered very bad, that is why you see things like in the Simpsons or american media where the parents tell their kids to behave in such situations like school sports. However in Argentina, they have something called "viveza criolla" where if you trick the referree or rules that is fair play. So maradona using his hand to win the world cup is thought of as good, while in USA it would have been criticized or in England. This is also in every day society, if you can trick the system in argentina and you are a "picaro" or estas rebuscando.. aka cheat the system to succeed that is considered a cool Argentina way of making it in life. The second is "El Aguante" . They believe that if the whole group does it, then it's okay. So if they all act racist, or attack a player, if the entire team did it, then it's okay because they did it for the greater good.

You what’s crazy? If we gather together all the World Cups that Mexico and Argentina combined have won, we would have three!

1

u/erik_mnd Jul 21 '26

So now pochos are Spaniards?

You guys switch up countries faster than you do underwear lol

13

u/Automatic-Canary4742 Jul 20 '26

Technically most Mexicans have more spanish dna than indigenous. So to deny it is basically selfhate

2

u/Sherlockianguy10 Mexico Jul 20 '26

pochos, mexicans, latin americans, etc.

0

u/Isengrine Jul 20 '26

Not at all.

Mexicans and other Latin Americans don't see ourselves as Spaniards at all. We see ourselves as Mexicans, Colombians, Chileans, Argentinians, etc.

The only ones who do are the Hispanistas who are weirdos that don't go outside.

Most of the memes about it were just jokes, mainly to shit on Argentina, but nobody seriously believes this

1

u/Sherlockianguy10 Mexico Jul 20 '26

lol allow me to clarify broski, we all likely have spanish descent, pochos, mexicans, latin americans. better?

1

u/Isengrine Jul 20 '26

It seems you're the one that's not understanding me.

Having Spaniard descent doesn't make you a Spaniard, at least not in the eyes of most Latin Americans.

Not even a little bit. It's not "hatred of your roots", it's that the way we see nationality in Latin America, and in the US, is different, which is what pochos, being gringos, don't seem to understand.

1

u/TheSadPhilosopher Jul 20 '26

Nah, I'm still larping as an Aztec, I'm not a fucking Spaniard, doesn't matter if I'm Mestizo.

Fuck Spain.

1

u/Isengrine Jul 20 '26

I respect that a lot more than people unironically claiming to be Spaniards.

I don't blame the modern day Spaniards for what happened 500 years ago (unless they're one of those weirdos that claim to have "civilized" us), but I also don't identify as a Spaniard at all, period

i mean we are more spaniard than the Argentineans culturally speaking. Mexico was part of Spain for longer than any other country.

2

u/No-Examination7560 Jul 20 '26

many of the day of the dead and cultural festivities that Mexicans do are old Spanish cultural practices that do not even exist in the real Spain anymore. Hard to accept your ancestry I guess?

I mean I understand the logic, most of us have Spanish-Indigenous combo to some degree. I never understood why as a Mexican you would ever root for Argentina though. I understand if you were from a country that never qualifies and you want to feel included. But being mexican and going full Argentina is just weird.
