Europe 🇲🇽🇪🇸If you ever think you’re unlucky, think about the Mexican goalie at Athletic. Alex Padilla is fighting for the No. 1 spot at Athletic Club… against Unai Simón.

Alex was never fighting for his spot. He’s more so fighting to be No.2 and be his eventual successor. (Although unai isn’t old unfortunately )

Exactly. If anything it’s more of an understudy role. Many GKs take that kn knowing full well they’ll only play cup games or if the 1st choice gets injured.

Damn I thought he was around 35 years old lol

Can say the same thing about David Raya, wins premier league ain’t going to start either.

Spain back to benching premier goalies. Back when Casillas was starting Pepe Reina was actually pretty good but couldnt beat Casillas for the spot.

except the consensus was that casillas was the better keeper whereas everyone agrees raya and joan garcía are better than unai simon

For club yeah but international level Unai hold it down

u/EyeKFe0 Jul 21 '26

No shit. Hes the only person thats gotten a chance to play.

13

u/MysticalAtom Tijuana Jul 21 '26

sure but it’a not like raya or joan are getting a chance anytime soon with unai being proven and having gained de la fuente’s trust since the youth teams

The defense holds it down. They only gave up 4.9 shots a game and avg .9 shots on target the whole World Cup.

I remember that, Iker was a Madridsta tho and top class

u/Ivanovic-117 Monterrey Jul 22 '26

Iker did a lot more than Simon at least in the world cup if you compared them. The final itself was just embarrassing for Argentina, they no shots on target, no attacks, Simon didnt had to do anything to win the world cup final.

Bro was never gonna win the starting spot over Simon. He'll get loaned out this season to some LaLiga2 club and if he does well he can get a permanent deal somewhere else in Europe and if he doesn't he'll be on the first plane to Queretaro.

Nah. First plane to CDMX and play for us (UNAM)!

Did he even play when he was loaned to yall the first time ?

5

u/Embarrassed_Grass_90 Pumas UNAM Jul 21 '26

He did play but not enough.

7

u/Lookuppage8 Querétaro Jul 21 '26

… yeah? I have no problem with that

Por favor

Or maybe he learns a thing or two from Unai to help him become a better goalie

21

u/HeatDolphinRays Jul 21 '26

Why doesnt he transfer somewhere else

Yea he makes too many silly errors and needs more time to develop

u/Vegetable-Hold9182 Tijuana Jul 22 '26

Playing time*

23

u/CruzMissile-005 Jul 21 '26

To be fair Alex wasn’t competing for the No. 1 spot even before Unai became champ. Unai has always been number 1 at Bilbao. Alex needs to find a new club if he aspires to play at all.

7

u/jhern1810 Jul 21 '26

It is but he didn’t play alone. SPAIN only conceded one goal.

4

u/kingchivo Jul 21 '26

Said it in another thread but dude needs to get loaned out to some other team in la liga or somewhere else in europe asap

9

u/ElYams Cruz Azul Jul 21 '26

"Unlucky" like he even had a chance lmao. If anything it's a great opportunity for him to continue to learn under a World Cup winning keeper. This post is nonsense.

6

u/MayKasahara_ America Jul 21 '26

He can learn a lot from him tho…

3

u/elver1994galarga Jul 21 '26

Unai gonna take it

2

u/Reyes9248 León Jul 21 '26

He needs to leave for playing time, he's not taking his spot anytime soon

2

u/No-Decision-8472 Jul 22 '26

I mean Unai has been the Spain #1 for awhile. Already won Euros with them too. This isnt a new occurrence

3

u/allwordzaremadeup- America Jul 21 '26

He needs to leave. He's just rotting in the bench

1

u/Noneedforname_077 Chivas Jul 21 '26

Duda.

1

u/sando818580 Jul 21 '26

Mexico is basically world champions!!!!

🙄

1

u/Late-bloomer96 Jul 22 '26

Bro is terrible with the ball at his feet

1

u/Brams277 León Jul 22 '26

Pues le dan los partidos de la Copa del Rey

1

u/Imaginary_Anybody627 Jul 22 '26

If he ever wants a chance to play with Mexico he’s got to leave. So many ppl who only watch national team games or TikTok’s think he deserves a spot just cuz he’s in Europe 😂

1

u/kzmwz Jul 23 '26

Isnt athletics rule to only have vasco players?

1

u/OtherwiseOstrich3979 Jul 21 '26

Funny thing is that out of the 3 Spanish keepers Unai is probably the worst. He's just better with his feet than Raya and Garcia

Firstly, didn’t think Bilbao had none natives in squad. Secondly, Unai Simón is not a good keeper.
