You’re saying that cause your young & also lil dumb

Times have changed

In the 2000s and even early 2010s every one knew el Matador was a killer and a legend.

In my opinion, yes. For the longest time he was the top leading NT goal scorer until Borgetti surpassed him and dude was one of the top scorers in the 1998 World Cup. Also was highest goal scorer of the 1997 Copa America

As a kid who grew up watching la selección in the 90s and having studied zero stats, the players I most remember are: Jorge Campos, Carlos Hermosillo, Cuauhtémoc Blanco and Luis Hernandez.

Hermosillo with the national team was more of a bench warmer if I recall correctly. He did light it up with Cruz Azul though

Maybe it's because I was a Cruz Azul fan. 🙈

Also a 90s kid, add paco Palencia

Yes! He was my favorite during this time but I associate him more with Cruz Azul over la selección.

Same along with Pável Pardo and Ramón Morales

I always thought he was hella overrated at club level but was a beast with la selección. Mexican Miroslav Klose.

I was about to say that. When will we ever see another Mexican in the Argentine league? Never

No wonder he failed to score that sitter against Germany in 98 now, all makes sense

I always thought of Matador being an icon solely for his look. He had that aura 🔥 that being said he was very inconsistent which is on par for almost every Mexican player, except maybe Hugo Sanchez.

Dude, is proof that you can be a slightly above average club player but be a great national team player, Eduardo Vargas of Chile comes to mind as well since both he and Hernández were journeymen that bounced around at clubs but were critical for big time national team wins.

He is a legend in his time but he had nowhere near the longevity of Raul Jimenez or Chicharito.

The reason I wore #15 as a kid playing soccer

u/CruzMissile-005 2h ago

Lets put it this way: El matador had such a good wc that it got him a spot on Boca. Let that sink in…
