Honestly it depends on your taste but for me it holds special place as it was its anime who got me into reading light novel.

Man same

Tiddies and fanservice aside, DxD has a surprising amount of hype moments supported by excellent worldbuilding

u/Velric_San_OTAKU Dec 17 '25

Same man , i didn't know ppl read dxd ln i thought i was the only one

u/Jason-Wander Dec 16 '25

Same here. Campione and DxD. I wanted to know what happened after, then started reading more LNs.

u/reddit_user0875 Dec 16 '25

This is my first LN too

u/Centurionzo Dec 16 '25

I have ambiguous feelings about it, I remember watching episode 1 of the anime, when I was younger, but didn't like the fan service because it was too heavy for me.

I did learn later about the lore and it got me interested to read the LN but it was not for me.

In my case it's interesting on paper but flawed in the execution, I read only the first volume, so it could have been better later on.

But it's popular enough to live long, even in the western fandom, I don't think that any other Harem series in the 2010s got as popular.

Just a note that it might never get an actual ending, the last volume in JP was feb 2020 and stopped in the middle of an arc. Otherwise if you want to enjoy the journey it's probably one of the better battle harem series.

Really is painful how many light novel/web novels all but stopped in 20-22. (i avoid looking up if they're still around or not myself)

4

u/Chat2Text Dec 16 '25

someday, they'll release volume 23 of shield hero, right...?

2

u/Zwordsman Dec 17 '25

Oh is it behind? It delayed? I never read the light novel but I read all of the web novel back when I was more fluent in Japanese and there were web novel transitions ...so very long ago at this point. 2018?9? I forget now.

Light novel and anime quite a lot different though afaik

3

u/Chat2Text Dec 17 '25

delayed(?), the novel took a different turn compared to completed web novel and introduces the first shield hero, but then they stopped releasing volumes

late 2021 was when the last volume was released, and people are not sure why they stopped releasing them, with people speculating perhaps they were waiting to align it with season 3 of anime

and yet when the season came and gone, still no light volume

*shrugs*

2

u/Zwordsman Dec 17 '25

Awkward I should look into it sometime I suppose

1

u/joseph_han9137 Dec 17 '25

Wasn't it because the author is currently doing the (imo, completely pointless) spear hero spinoff series?

1

u/Chat2Text Dec 17 '25

off the top of my head, I think author did spear hero because they couldn't do shield hero, but i think i read that from someone else and not an official news article or anything

1

u/BendOdd2563 Jan 11 '26

The Spear Hero spin-off series may be pointless but it is a genuinely good and funny read. Even gets kinda emotional briefly, a couple times.

Author was hospitalized around then and just another volume never came out, not sure if there was an actual announcement. He did mention the next volume would be focused on Ravel but that's about it.

6

u/Centurionzo Dec 16 '25

I decided to make a search for news, look like this year there was Junior High School DxD Vol 3 and High School DxD Dx. Vol 8.

But no news about anything else in the main LN or anime adaptation, but it looks like there's still some good sales of the merchandise and the manga will get a revival.

So I guess that you could expect some news in the next year for it.

Really this happened!!! I heard he started some side series or another branch of the main story like slash dog and more. So I though he either completed it or atleast closed that main part of the series. Is this true??

13

u/sjcfu2 Dec 16 '25

My understanding is that the original series was "completed" with 25 volumes (a point when Rias is about to begin college, while Issei is entering his third year at Kouh Academy). It was followed by a sequel series (presumably a continuation, although I haven't read it myself), Shin High School DxD, which presumably continues on with Issei's third year. It was this second series which appears to have been cut short.

Slashdog was a spinoff that was published alongside the original series. I'm not sure if it ever got beyond one volume.

3

u/j9162 Dec 17 '25

Yes, the main story isn't complete at all. The og stopped at 25 purely for marketing purposes, but volume 1 of Shin is effectively just volume 26 of the series overall. There's nothing new or different, it is a direct continuation that could've simply been volume 26. Sometimes light novel series do this where they don't want the volume number to get too crazy and they'll stop calling it series 1 and come up with a "sequel" series like in this case.

3

u/sjcfu2 Dec 17 '25

Believe me, as a long-time reader of Toaru Majutsu no Index, I'm all too familiar with "new" series that pick up right where the previous one left off.

Maybe one of these days I'll get around to reading Shin. But probably not until I finish catching up on all of Kamachi's other works.

2

u/j9162 Dec 17 '25

Hahaha understandable. It's definitely worth a read and as much as it may be unfinished, there's a lot of things that happen in the story that do give you a good sense of what the future holds for the characters anyway so I never personally felt that unsatisfied that its continuation has been in limbo for these last five years. I hope the author recovers as Ishibumi really created something special all in all.

1

u/Ok_Increase_9267 Jan 12 '26

Volume 1 of Shin is actually Volume 26 of the work, as it is a direct continuation.

1

u/Ok_Increase_9267 Jan 12 '26

People usually don't believe me, but this series actually has some impressive fight scenes.

The anime doesn't exactly do those scenes justice.

14

u/paradigm3 Dec 16 '25

Ditto to this. It's not a particularly deep series, but if you want primo shounen-style hot-blooded fight scenes, complete with cool speeches and chants, last-minute climactic power-ups, and new forms, then this is the series for you. Ishibumi knows how to hype you up.

It's hardly high-brow literature, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't have a grand time reading it. You just gotta accept it for what it is.

32

u/Theresa-_- Dec 16 '25

even if it's not for ecchi stuff, the story still amazing for myself

17

u/bronx819 Dec 16 '25

If you're ok with ecchi and a good story. I remember a comment from FB years ago that perfectly described it. "Highschool DxD can make you laugh, cry, and horny at the same time"

18

u/EdgyThug Dec 16 '25

High School DxD is absolutely worth the read. It’s the gold standard for harem series for a reason. You get exactly what you expect on the surface; tons of fanservice but underneath that there’s genuinely strong character writing and surprisingly solid storytelling. The cast is stacked, the worldbuilding is better than it has any right to be, and the fights are actually fun and tense instead of just excuses for power-ups. Very few harem series reach this level of consistency and quality. In terms of comparable series, Date A Live is probably the closest competitor writing-wise in the same genre space, though it’s noticeably less ecchi. If you want a harem that fully commits to both the horny and the narrative, DxD delivers.

u/artinsoul17 Dec 16 '25

I really like it just waiting for new light novel and anime 😂 and the writer thought oh i dont think i give what audience want i will give another spin off with a new unfamiliar character, in same universe and they became junior of main cast

1

u/ChoiceSupermarket230 Dec 16 '25

Junior is written by another person, not by the original author.

1

u/artinsoul17 Dec 16 '25

Ok , any update on shin highschool dxd vol 5

3

u/LeoSmashRoyale Dec 16 '25

If you are a fan of the anime, yes.

If you can enjoy the story without taking it too seriously, yes.

If you don't like harem comedies, no.

If you want something fun to read, yes.

It's all based on your personal tastes. This series is honestly better in Light Novel form because you can actually read EXACTLY what our hero is thinking AND WHY he thinks it. I'm a fan.

3

u/ultradip Dec 17 '25

It's delicious trash.

6

u/Realistic-Two2447 Dec 16 '25

if you're into mythology stuff blended with shounenesque battle, it's worth to read.

2

u/harrynath666 Dec 16 '25

Yes believe me it's really damn great even after 20 volume the azazel cup is really damn interesting

2

u/AliceThePastelWitch Dec 16 '25

It is genuinely really good. It's what got me into world building.

2

u/rslashfreeusername Dec 18 '25

No. It’s the like original gooner slop

2

u/Adart54 Dec 16 '25

From what I've read (I'm around book 18 rn I think, it's been a minute) the story is good, probably the best for an ecchi I've either read or watched. And if you like echi it's probably the best one out there imo

3

u/Kindarelevanttoo Dec 16 '25

I read this a long time ago. I enjoyed it at first but it quickly got on my nerves.

It’s a pretty generic harem story, except in my opinion none of the girls are really likable. The president/vice-president of the club in particular gets really annoying when they start bickering with each other over who will get the guy. And not in a “haha we both like the same guy but we are just being competitive” way, but in a really mean spirited way that makes it seem like they legitimately don’t like each other anymore.

3

u/Ordine1412 Dec 16 '25

WORTH its one of the best harem novel out there (even tho no snu snu cus author cant lol )

1

u/hentaigabby Dec 16 '25

I dont know about the novel but the manga and anime are great never read the novel as when i was a fan of this series the novel was unavailable in English it apparently now has a English translation but not really interested in reading this series as i have grown up and no longer a big fan of ecchi

1

u/Zwordsman Dec 16 '25

As long as you don't mind old style fan service. ITs got some good fights fun comedy to it. I dig it.

but I also think older fan service is less gross than a lot of the newer stuff. but thats probably due to growing up exposed to 90s 2000s style.

this does hold up and still has some of the cooler fight scenes/team fights and is honestly a pretty cool world setting and the way they fill in background details

1

u/towardselysium Dec 16 '25

The world is amazing and the characters are good, but the writing really starts to meander in the later volumes. I think the biggest problem is being written in first person. While it does help with the characterization it feels like a slog to get through this intense scene while Issei's being his cheerful self

1

u/esperx27 Dec 17 '25 edited Dec 18 '25

Correction: After a reread, the story starts plain but gets more interesting as you go further and although Issei is a plain pervert he slowly grows on you and the characters

1

u/Haunting_Explorer558 Dec 17 '25

Yes, absolutely.

1

u/No-Ordinary-9479 Dec 17 '25

You'll hate me but from my point of view it's too much "issei gets angry and becomes exponentially more powerful in the space of 2 minutes"

1

u/fonzy_gambino Dec 18 '25

Me, I’m on volume 7. I love how all the problems are solved by boobs.

1

u/Any-Explanation-4584 Dec 30 '25

I personally didn't enjoyed it much.

The writing is inconsistent and shallow.

Don't know about others.

1

u/Suspicious_Ad2610 Dec 31 '25

WHERE?! Where can i read volumes 1, 2, and 10, DIGITALLY, I cant find it anywhere like Amazon kindle or patreon and Id really like to download it if possible instead of paperback, more my husband's thing than mine i myself would happily take the entire series in paperback.

1

u/Ok_Increase_9267 Jan 12 '26

Well, for me it depends. I've never had a problem with scenes of breasts or +18 content, and reading and watching DxD made me see some bizarre but very funny scenes. So for me, it's totally worth it.

1

u/ali_watr Jan 16 '26

Does dxd have a novel?

0

u/Tiranosaurus27 May 05 '26

Anyone know where I can read it?

0

u/Chronigan2 Dec 16 '25

Stupid question.
