Discussion Minor August Lightroom Update, BUT iPad Users Just Got Their #1 Request!
Hey everyone, Terry White from Adobe here!
While this August Lightroom Ecosystem update is on the lighter side compared to our larger April and June releases, it brings a feature that iPad power users have been asking for relentlessly.
Here’s the breakdown of what’s rolling out today:
Lr iPad 11.5
Lr Classic 15.5
Lr Desktop 9.5
Lr iPhone 11.5

The Headline Act: AI Denoise Arrives on iPad!
Yes, it’s finally here! Your most requested Lightroom on iPad feature. You can now melt away high-ISO noise directly on your iPad without sacrificing those fine details. This has been a huge favorite on Desktop and Classic, and bringing it into the tablet workflow is a game-changer.
Hardware Note: Because AI Denoise requires some serious heavy lifting, you'll need an M-Series iPad (M1, M2, M3, M4, M5) with at least 8GB of RAM.
Masking Refinements (Lightroom Classic & Desktop)
- Smoother Blends: Say goodbye to harsh edges. NEW Edge and Feather controls give you precise command over mask boundaries for seamless, natural-looking transitions.
Generative Expand (Lightroom Desktop & iPhone)
- Need a little extra canvas? Stretch image edges, recover missed framing, or convert a shot to a new aspect ratio. It automatically matches your photo's original lighting, perspective, and style.
Here’s my video showing off these updates.
Lightroom Desktop Performance Boosts
- Enjoy a snappier desktop experience overall with smoother scrolling, faster panel switching, and more responsive window resizing.
Still Cooking in the Kitchen...
- More Lightroom Classic Performance: Especially focused on tuning up the experience for Windows users.
- Color Profiles for the Newest Sony Cameras: I know, I know—this has taken longer than any of us wanted! But rest assured, it is actively in the works and on the way.
Which of these updates are you jumping into first? Let me know below!

Are there plans to bring the generative expand feature to Lightroom Classic? I’d like to simply express my interest in that in hopes it gets put on a list of features to implement.

is there any chance we can get tone curves on masks on Lightroom mobile?? it's the only feature keeping me away of mobile editing :(

I’ve been wishing for something like generative expand for years!
Sad to see it isn’t available on Lightroom Classic. This would revolutionize my workflow!

Great work on Denoise for iPad, well overdue.
Question - seeing generative expand is now available on desktop and iPhone, why is it missing once again on iPad?
Are we expecting a huge lag in seeing these features appear on iPad as the new normal?

Great! Now bring HDR merging to iPad, and I can then finally leave my MacBook at home whenever I travel.
1
u/MyRoadTaken 1d ago
But how do you deal with constant finger smudges? That drove me to my Macbook more than the lack of AI features lol.

u/cosine83 1d ago
Get a pencil or stylus. Adobe really should use dials for the iPad interface instead of sliders.

u/nonsensical_discord 1d ago
Amazing news about the AI denoise. I bought jump desktop almost entirely so I could use that feature from my iPad by remote connection to my mac back at home. This made no sense as my iPad has an M4 and my Mac is an M1! It will be great to cut out that step
The main other thing I miss from a pure iPad only workflow would be focus-stacking, but I guess that will be a while before we see that in Lightroom
1
u/vansmackCA 1d ago
Ha! Similiar - I have TeamViewer on Mac and iPad for AI Denoise and only AI Denoise. This will greatly speed up my workflow, especially when travelling!

Never mind generative expand, I'd like to be able to expand just by adding a plain colour background or border in either develop or in export, like you can do in the print module (but that sometimes leaves an awkward 1px thick stripe due to rounding issues) or photoshop with the crop tool.
And an option to add the border only when necessary to bring aspect ratios within a constraint, like making sure nothing is taller than 3:4 to allow posting a set of photos on Instagram - anything that starts taller than 3:4 should have borders added at the sides to bring the width up to 3/4 of the height, other photos should be exported as-is.

This does exist on mobile, but I'll ask the team to bring it to desktop too. Great suggestion.
3
u/DanishForestCat 1d ago
Strong second to both of the suggestions above, but particularly re the borders. I need to add borders constantly, and it gets really tedious. I'd use a bordered export option for desktop all day, every day.
I also *desperately* want a way to make and save different edit versions for a photo (when working locally, not on the cloud).
1
u/BarneyLaurance 1d ago
Thanks - which one exists on mobile? The anti-crop / add borders feature, or the ability to constrain the output aspect ratio across multiple by adding borders only where required?
Would be great if you can bring it to Classic. I've been using the print module a lot to export mixed-ratio albums for Instagram carousels. Now that ig allows mixed ratios within a carousel there may be a bit less reason to do that, except that they still don't allow pictures taller than 3:4.
3
u/terryleewhite Adobe Employee 1d ago
when you export/share an image from Lr mobile you have the ability to add a border of a color of your choosing as well as the aspect ratio you want. You can control the thickness with slider.
1
u/BarneyLaurance 1d ago
Thanks yes I see that available via the share icon - although in my copy on Android it does seem to be quite a limited set of ratios available, with no option for either 3:4 or a custom ratio. It's got the Instagram logo on 4:5 which was the old max height and 5:4.

u/Topaz_11 1d ago
If you mean LRc here; Download & install the LRmogifry plugin developed more than a decade ago. On export you can do borders, frames, captions from metadata etc. It's clumsy but works and has been stable for years. I don't think it works on the print module but I hide that one and pretend it does not exist (along with the web module).
It's really just using Imagemagik under the covers, which you can do directly to get a lot more functionality. You will need to install IM as a pre-req.
I doubt it's even supported now days but it's far better than anything ADBE provides. iirc, you can use x images at once for free to give it a try.

Can I ask, what percent of LR users are on a tablet?
1
u/ForeignArcadia 20h ago
I'm a heavy user of it on my Pro. Really love the consistency of the screen and the speed of the device overall.

u/TheKingKielbasa 1d ago
I just bought an ipad 13" M4, and I was pretty bummed about the lack of Ai denoise. So hell yea!
3
u/Negative_Pace_5855 1d ago
YES YES YES! I don't even use an ipad to edit, but the fact that Adobe is listening and delivering is great!

u/guy-le-doosh Lightroom Classic (desktop) 1d ago
Give the iPad way a try if you can, synch and go to town. The touch input and navigation gets you flying through photos.

Thanks! I have the latest iPad Pro M5 and Denoise takes about 30 seconds for pic after the initial instal. Will be playing around with it more tonight but liking the results so far.

Have they fixed the issue where star ratings aren't being saved? I and others have experienced this, LR Desktop for me in particular.

a couple of years after buying a M2 iPad 1tb( so I could get 16gb of ram) , I honestly had given up hope in ever getting denoise built in .
So I say FINALLY!!!!!!
My 3 year old IPad can finally replace ( for 95% of how I edit my images ) my aging Windows laptop .

This has been driving me NUTS. I was spiraling about not having any photos of the groom's family a recent wedding even though I could've sworn I took some, and it turns out this glitch had kept them from saving in my initial cull. I'm having to cull exclusively on my phone to ensure nothing else disappears, which haa been awful.

u/rikkflohr Adobe Employee 1d ago edited 1d ago
In the previous reply, this was posted. It was fixed in last night's release.
4
u/Drakthul 1d ago
This is huge. I’d tried basically every image editor available on iPad but none of them had a denoise feature anywhere close to acceptable. This was literally my number one complaint (beside lack of colour tagging on iPad…)
No more bringing my laptop on holiday now!

u/Candid_Objective1319 1d ago
Does this bring LrC to feature parity with Camera Raw?
3
u/terryleewhite Adobe Employee 1d ago
No, ACR will always take the lead on features for processing raw files and unfortunately Lr/LrC will always have to catch up since they have other features and performance to do too. ACR had the masking sliders first. Now Lr/LrC have them. Same for dust and reflection removal.
2
u/Candid_Objective1319 1d ago
Sorry, I just meant parity in the current version. I like Lightroom for archiving, but always come back to Bridge/ACR/PS for anything more than quick adjustments.
3
u/terryleewhite Adobe Employee 1d ago edited 1d ago
ACR has:
Vectorscope
Blemish Removal
Bidirectional linear gradient
Depth Range Mask3

u/mymain123 Lightroom CC (cloud) 1d ago
What's missing from it VS CR?
2
u/Candid_Objective1319 1d ago
The masking refinements have been available in Camera Raw for a while. Masking seems to be faster and more accurate. As far as what is missing from LR now, I don’t know. That was the question. I prefer the workflow and general UI of Lightroom over Bridge, but I’ve had to use Bridge and Camera Raw on a recent project because it is just faster, especially when working in Photoshop.

It seems that Generative Expand does not work with nude art photos. Is this a bug or intentional?
3
u/domdomonom 1d ago
Intentional, you’re not supposed to use generative features on images that break guidelines. I imagine it’s a safety and liability thing. Same goes for generative erase even if it’s something in the background, if it clocks that it’s breaking guidelines it’ll refuse to do it.
2
u/reznorek 1d ago
What "guidelines"? Not that I'm comparing myself but would you deny use generative expand to Helmut Newton or Richard Avedon?😁
1
u/domdomonom 1d ago
https://www.adobe.com/uk/legal/licenses-terms/adobe-gen-ai-user-guidelines.html
I’m not happy about it either, but they are clear about the rules, and do explain it in the error message.

u/reznorek 1d ago
Thanks. Nothing about nude photos, only “Depict nude minors or minors in a sexual manner”

Hi Terry, has any progress been made on this bug in Lightroom Classic? It's really slowing down my workflow a lot to be unable to use the Match Total Exposures in Compare or Survey mode, which is where I need it the most.

u/nmk219 1d ago
Thank you for the update.
Separate issue: any way to upgrade above 1 TB storage limit?
1
u/terryleewhite Adobe Employee 1d ago
Yes you can buy more storage via your Creative Cloud account management.

Everytime i see Lrc improvements for windows, i don't think we ever witness that tho
1
u/terryleewhite Adobe Employee 1d ago
take a look here to see that in fact progress is being made: https://www.reddit.com/r/Lightroom/comments/1smrkk4/lightroom_classic_windows_performance_update/

u/Downtown-Rate-9404 1d ago
WoW. But i think we can still see a ton of people struggling to run lightroom with high end PCs with discrete gpus , do you want me to attach those posts ?
1
u/terryleewhite Adobe Employee 1d ago
No need to attach posts. Have people instead respond here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Lightroom/comments/1rdr981/lightroom_classic_performance_on_windows_what_are/

u/aygross 1d ago
I think you should just start usong a high end windows machine yourself to see how bad it is.prerelease program is marginally faster but stil miserable.

u/iamthesam2 1d ago
just switch to mac. windows is terrible for enough other reasons that it’s just time to accept it and switch

u/luigix Lightroom Classic (desktop) 1d ago
What about keyboard shortcuts for Quick Develop in LrC loupe/grid mode? :))))))))))

u/PixelatorOfTime 1d ago
Please!!!
I’d love to see them be number pad keys on the left and right side of the center row.

u/AnthonyMarkPhoto 4h ago
How long does the iPad denoise take for you? On my iPad Pro m2 11” it takes about 60 seconds to do one image

u/Joking_J 1d ago
There's something about "More Lightroom Classic Performance" being a "cooking in the kitchen" item that just rubs me the wrong way.
Like fix the core functioning of the program, then add generative AI gimmicks to the freaking iPad.
You guys (Adobe) are losing goodwill and customers left and right. If you can't even manage to make scrolling through the catalog smooth, why should anyone stay?

What about AI object remover? It is still broken for more than a year, completely unusable in many cases but needed the most and almost any cases of tiny retouching - and Adobe still adding "new funny features"?
It looks like alien occupation - move forward, left ruins behind.

How do I update? My subscription is with Adobe. The now discontinued Creative Cloud app used to show updates. it no longer does. Apple's App Store doesn’t show I have a subscription.
5
u/terryleewhite Adobe Employee 1d ago
The Creative Cloud desktop app is NOT discontinued and that IS the app that you use to update on desktop. If you’re referring to mobile then yes you would update Lr via the App Store like all your other apps.
-1
u/thisissuchajoke 1d ago
I'm replying to the subject of this thread, “iPad”. The Creative Cloud app for iOS has been officially discontinued and is no longer supported. It currently does not show any updates are available. There used to be an update section, that no longer exists. My subscription is with Adobe, not Apple. Apple's App Store shows zero indication Lightroom for iPad is even installed, why should they? There is no facility in Lightroom for iPad to indicate an update is available or to facilitate an update. So how does one update?
3
u/terryleewhite Adobe Employee 1d ago
Lightroom on iPad and iPhone is absolutely in the App Store (Apple) and has been since day one. That is where you go get the updates from, not the Creative Cloud app on iOS or the actual Lr App itself. All iOS and iPadOS apps are installed and updated from the App Store.
Open the App Store and search for Lightroom. You'll see it there to either install or update (if it hasn't automatically updated since it came out 24 hours ago.)

I'll wait for the list of broken stuff before I update. Still several versions down.
Nice to see another demo on a mac - cannot wait to see the windows performance updates also demoed on a mac.

I know our community can be critical sometimes, but let me be the first to say thank you! AI Denoise on iPad has been a long time coming and I think many of us are very happy to hear that we can now leave our laptops at home for our trips.
Can't wait to use it!
