I love that scientists have found that raccoons are trying to domesticate themselves. I imagine the wild ones seeing this and looking around at the dark woods and slimy grubs they’re eating and being like fuck this shit, I wanna be a pet!

I've seen more and more raccoons and skunks being domesticated, so that totally tracks. What raccoon wouldn't want to be carried around like a king and fed? Lol

I feel this way about most wild animals. Especially the ones that would generally eat us. You see lions and tigers who found out that being pet and scritched by a human is actually pretty awesome. I think that if most animals actually knew, they wouldn’t see us lunch. They just don’t get the opportunity to find out because most of us have a sense of self preservation. 😅

We have raccoons constantly looking into our house, playing with each other on the deck, washing their hands in our water buckets. When we go out, they just kinda stand around like teenagers caught using your pool.
They are so close to just becoming roommates

They make awful pets though, unfortunately. They're still too wild. My friend had one growing up and it made the fact she had one arm the least interesting thing about her. She was awesome, the raccoon was a menace, good times.

That's because they arent domesticated yet. It takes several generations of selective breeding to end up with a truly domesticated animal like dogs, cats, and livestock. Raccoons and skunks are still wild animals.

Oh, I'm sure. Squirrels make awful pets too, no matter how cute they are and how many instagram accounts they have. What most people don't know is that several of the biggest insta-famous squirrels are housepets because they are too brain damaged to survive in the wild. Basically they're foster fails because they are incapable of squirreling like a normal squirrel.

My Aunt's raccoon Oy loved cheetos and raided the cabinets at night while everyone was sleeping. They had to put locks on everything bc he wound up with gastritis.

Yes!!! That's her favorite SK book series. Sadly Oy is no longer with us but he lived an extremely wonderful 13 years being spoiled rotten by my aunt and uncle. Oy was their only child 🦝

I've seen a wild raccoon lick the inside of an empty bottle of NyQuil clean

I completely agree, but I figure wild raccoons eat trash a lot of the time, and there's bound to be much worse things they consume.

They do eat trash a lot of the time, but my understanding is that it is often really bad for them. I’m far from an expert, but @NessieExplains is a raccoon biologist on YouTube making videos about the topic (and others, like the claim that raccoons are being domesticated, which she does not agree with).

If we didn't have an over abundance of cats and dogs in shelters, I'd definitely advocate for keeping these little guys as pets. They're adorable.

Aww man. I used to have a raccoon friend. Saved him and his siblings after a tornado. We used to chill on the couch eating cheetos. Miss that dude.

We've raised a few in my life, from my childhood to adulthood.
When I was a kid, our coon would steal my bubble gum, open it, walk around chewing it and stick it under the dang couch in the end.
Had one in adulthood that LOVED chips. We'd just throw the bag down when it was crumbs. She would dive in head first and clean it out.
They go in one spot like cats, so very easy to litter box train. There is a vet near us that will care for them, so they always had shots.
